Starting Again
I'd like to start again. Do you ever wish you could do that? Go back to the way it was at the beginning (of whatever). I feel like I've lost my way a bit and it took remembering why I started this blog in the first place (sharing & connection) and my mission statement, if you will (get kids d...

Oh, neat! Sorry about all the rain and the flood warnings. Not the best of times to visit Asheville. Send me an email if you'd like local to-do ideas or want to meet for coffee! jeanvanthul@gmail.com
On the Cover (And My Issues with Being Seen)
I'm on the cover of VERVE Magazine, a local magazine with the mission of "Covering Asheville's most fascinating women." This is equally exciting and nerve-racking for me. The last time I was on the cover of something was when I was born—2 weeks early in an ambulance on April Fool's Day. I'm s...
Yeah. Thanks. It's definitely something I need to work through. A friend of mine just told me a bout a new book called "The Shy Writer Reborn" -- I just downloaded it to my Kindle and am hoping it helps!

Well, thanks, Amy! Yes, you learn something new every day!
By the way, I bought that colored film at our local art supply store. It was available just by the sheet, which I thought was pretty cool -- it meant we could pick and choose our colors and just buy as much as we needed.
Stained Glasses (Or, Fun and Games in Our House...)
Kids can be: Silly. Experimental. Persistent. Creative. Playful. And (add in a few bonus adjectives here). All in the space of a few minutes. Or one art activity. When we were making the quilt stained glass window for our front door recently (which we LOVE, by the way), we all started off on...
Wish I could see his paper clothing! :)

Not at the moment, Nancy. My publisher is arranging local (NC) events for now. Perhaps down the road, though!
The Kids' Arts and Crafts Directory -- Now Updated!
Don't forget the Kids' Arts and Crafts Directory when you're looking for an art activity to do with your children. A friend has been updating it for me and it's now almost completely up to date. Yay! Whether you're looking for a specific kids art activity or just browsing for inspiration and i...
I wish I knew, Debbie! I've never used a heat gun. Let me know if you try it, though. Except for the first time, we've done ours outside on the grill. Others have said they've plugged their toaster oven in outside and done it there. Good luck!
Making Melted Bead Suncatchers
Now that Maia is on summer vacation, we have been using Daphne's nap time to read and, often, to work on an art or craft project together. Yesterday we made melted bead suncatchers, an idea I found on Craftster (via Pinterest). They were surprisingly easy to create yet are very durable. Unlike...
We've done that too (with the cookie cutters) and loved the result!

It was! And I miss Chapel Hill sometimes, too. It's a great place.
My First Bookstore Event :: A Hands-On Family Art Activity
I had my first bookstore event at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill, North Carolina yesterday. It was just perfect in every way. (From my perspective anyway! I hope the bookstore and the families attending liked it as well....) The whole trip was a fun experience. Driving to Chapel Hill by myself w...

I bet Walmart has a variety. If not, you can order them online through Discount School Supply: http://www.discountschoolsupply.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?product=2256&keyword=translucent%20pony%20beads&scategoryid=0&CategorySearch=&Brand=&Price=
Good luck finding what you want!

I imagine you could do it with different paints or even with food coloring, Bernadette, although I haven't tried it myself with any other paints. If you try it, please let me know how it goes!
Make and Play with Puffy Paint (and a Recipe)
We have internet access on this beautiful farm, so I'm going to post something that I drafted a couple days ago... Maia and I mixed up some puffy paint recently and she got to paint using squeeze bottles, which was a big hit. This recipe was sent to me by Kimberly Stoney, a woman who tests and...
I imagine so, June, but am not sure. I know you can get the translucent beads in a variety of colors and tints at craft stores such as Michaels and AC Moore (where I got mine).
