I feel three things about Ortiz: 1. For everything he did before and after October 2004 I feel genuine respect, albeit begrudging due solely to his uniform. He is among the best sluggers of this era and seemingly very well liked and respected league-wide. 2. As for his performance that particular month, it makes it impossible for me to look at him without a wave of nausea coming over me. 3. His disrespectful intrusion into Francona's press-conference last year based solely on a personal-stat dispute and this quote from him: "If you go crazy and give contracts to whoever comes along despite not knowing how they're going to do, then you don't give me my due consideration, even though I do my thing every year, (expletive) that." do make me think slightly - just slightly - less of him than I otherwise would.

There is one hitter named Rodriguez who is having a great name. Sadly it's not Alex.

A-Rod's ABs with RISP have such an air of impending futility to them. It really is depressing to have him anchor this line-up. He can't hold Cano's jockstrap. Or Jeter's (many) used condoms. I dislike the man immensely.

With the exception of the 14-7 debacle started by a guy unlikely to start ever again, the Yankees are generally winning -- or they are losing very close games. These next 5 games are not critical, but being in the division, it would be great to go at least 3-2 in them. If they can still be up at least 5 games come the ASB, and we can be that much closer to Joba, Gardner, CC, and Pettitte coming back, I'll be happy.

Once Phelps is stretched back out he is clearly the preferred guy for the #5 slot. A rotation of Kuroda, Nova, Hughes, Freddy, and Phelps is not fearsome, but Nova, Hughes, and even Phelps have been solid so far and are fun to track as young players. Really need freddy to be a strong #4.

That was the worst loss of the season -- not just a blown save but an absolute mind-fart by Rapada throwing a sure double-play ball away. Just awful.

I've said it here many times and saw it noted toward the end of the article - Kevin Youkilis was the Red Sox version of Paul O-Neill. Though I never really hated Youkilis as much as I believe many SFs hated O'Neill. I always sort of appreciated the fact that he was clearly making the most of what talent he had been given and that this took every ounce of work and intense focus on his part. Papelbon got much more under my skin for some reason. Thanks for posting that ag. Actually, thanks for posting everything ag.

Excellent night by everyone - especially Hughes, who went 8.0 IP of shutout ball - except Cory Wade, who gives up 4 in the 9th to make is close and force Soriano in for the 2-pitch save. The Indians look ragged.

Yankees with the best record in baseball. They are getting fairly regular - if not exactly consistent - strong starts up and down their starting rotation. Very very nice.

This is a much needed blow-out WITH the starter going deep...love it. They really had to lean on Logan, Robertson, and Soriano against the Mets and Kuroda has just absolutely cruised while the offense scored early and often. Love it!

I didn't want to be the first to say it because coming from a YF it would be hard to read as anything but a dig, but I have to agree with Atheose. I don't think you can factor in Middlebrooks' salary when evaluating the quality of the Youk trade, BB. They already had Middlebrooks at that salary before the trade. You have to look at what they get in return for Youkilis, and on that score they seem to have gotten very little other than a continuing large payment on his salary while he plays for Chicago. That being said, the other way to evaluate it is whether this was addition by subtraction and all indications are that it is, largely based on Youkilis' not-so-hidden displeasure at the current regime in Boston and his reduced playing time. SFs have got to be pretty excited to see what they've got in Middlebrooks. There really is little in the game that is a much fun to witness as a star emerging on your team. But as for this move, it seems to me that it was at best a high price to pay to get rid of a problem and little more than that. I have to imagine it is a big relief for Valentine.

A good weekend overall after dropping game 1 and playing some awful defense last night. Always gratifying to best the mets. But they'll need kuroda to go deep tonight after using plenty of pen the last couple nights. Interleague play officially over for 2012 - the Yanks had the toughest interleague record of any AL team based on opposing team records and compiled the best AL record in interleague play for the season. Not bad. Now back to normal baseball...

That really hurts. If Teixeira is playing today that's almost certainly an inning-ending DP. Instead the Braves go back up by two and the inning continues. damn.

Am in 10th row behind the Nats dugout as they battle the Rays. So far we've had a delay caused by a malfunctioning sign, a video-reviewed homerun, a Hideki Matsui pinch hit (he grounded out), and, most interestingly, a Rays relief pitcher kicked out apparently for doctoring the ball (the umps took his mitt and locked it away 5 minutes before pulling him from the game. Eventful! Bummed to see the Yanks streak in danger in the 9th...

This team is ridiculous right now. Cano blasts one to dead center. 6-2 good guys. Teix and Cano are hot. Combine that with Granderson's continued mastery of the longball and Jeter racking up hits like crazy, plus periodic but critically timed contributions from Martin, Swisher, Ibanez, etc, and they are scary. Then there is their clean-up hitter - even his mediocrity is not dragging them down. Yanks 3 outs from extending this stretch to 20-4. I fear the law of averages biting us in the butt, but for now you've got to enjoy this ride.

Sadly no -- you'll be there??? I'll be in Washington, DC. Am leaving tomorrow morning. Going to Rays-Nats tomorrow night, coming back Friday. Have a blast! And stay cool - I think that is supposed to be the one really hot day of the week!

What a stretch of baseball. Pitching + HRs = 19-4 streak and 3 sweeps of NL East teams.

Induces the pop-up to Cano. Soriano has been exceptional for the Yanks. Cashman didn't want to kick in that $15mill, but it sure is nice to have him right now.

Chipper singles the other way. Not a single 1-2-3 inning for Yankee pitchers tonight. And now comes the chant and chop with a vengeance. Morons.
