Wonderful essay, but things like this always make me a little sad. I often wish I had memories like this from my youth.
Summer memories never fade away
It’s been so hot the last couple of days, I haven’t gone outside for more than a few minutes until the sun’s gone down, and even then walking down the middle of the street still feels like a furnace. Trading the blazing heat of a parking lot for the cool, dry air conditioning of a store is bliss...
As a Seattleite I'm a Canucks fan by default (when I'm not at an Everett Silvertips game), but if the Canucks weren't going to win, I'm okay with the Kings winning. Congratulations, and enjoy the victory. Unfortunately it'll be gone much too quickly.
Kings win the Stanley. Freaking. Cup.
I was 12 or 13, the first time I went to a hockey game. It was the old purple and gold Kings, at the Forum, against (I think) the Flyers. It would have been around 1983 or 1984, and a though I can't recall much about the game, a few things are clear in my memory: The Forum was not even half ful...
Wow...wasn't expecting this many comments. Usually the only person that reads my blog is my husband. :)
Rest assured, I love Christian, and have seen every episode of "Leverage". I plan to put "Just Married" on the TiVo just so I can see his performance.
I stick by my review of "Her Minor Thing". Christian was spectacular, especially at the very end, but the back story of the cruise tickets was a little hackneyed.
Interesting story about how "Fast Car" ended up on the CD, and I'm glad you posted. That said, I still don't like that song, even the original, and don't really plan to listen to it in the future.
I do hope to see him in concert some day - Seattle is obviously not too far from Portland where they shoot a lot of Leverage.
Thank you to everyone for your input!
Christian Kane - The House Rules
I was first introduced to Christian Kane in the 2005 indie film "Her Minor Thing." (Cute, but won't knock your socks off). There was something about his slow drawl and easy acting that drew me in. From that point on I kept an eye out for other acting projects he was involved in, up to and inc...
That was the sweetest clip I've seen in a very long time. Thank you so much for sharing. Hope you, Anne and the boys have a very Merry Christmas.
it's a festivus miracle
If you can't watch the embedded clip, you can see it here. You can see the whole thing on the Nerdist Holiday special, Christmas Eve on BBC America.
Not only am I a longtime reader who has read this post several times, I thought about you and this story yesterday as I watched my friends' kids light their fireworks in the street, including the dreaded groundflowers. :)
Because it's become a yearly tradition, here's a story about fireworks
I've written hundreds of thousands of words over the years, but this remains one of my all-time favorites, so I like to revisit it every year. It was originally written and published on July 5, 2002, which usually feels like years and days ago all at once, but this year actually feels like a lif...
If you don't want to get a Keurig might I suggest Starbucks' Via ready brew? I don't drink coffee but my husband swears by it. He keeps a few packets in his travel bag so he can have good coffee on the road, since you just need hot water.
each sensation makes a note in my symphony
The alarm went off at 7 this morning. Though I was asleep around 11 last night, the jolt of misery that shot through my body as I reached over to turn it off confirmed -- again -- that I am not a Morning Person. I slowly opened my eyes, and saw that Anne had already gotten out of bed. In her pla...
I like the tips for non-runners. :)
Friday Morning Pick Me Up...
It's time for the 2011 Vancouver Sun Run, so the L&T and I are headed up to Canada to face my nemesis tomorrow. When you tell non-runners that you're actually traveling to run 6.2 miles they look at you a little funny which reminded me of the following You Tube clip - Just remember, "Do not offe...
Ummm...maybe. :)

Friday Morning Pick Me Up...
Pretty quick one today, mostly because I'm still in the MNL and completely forgot till just a few minutes ago that it was Friday morning in the USA. Generally I try to mix it up a bit, but lets go with a couple from the 80's this morning... The movie, staring a young Gil Grissom (William Peterso...
Such a surreal moment...
#3
Very few (if any) of my friends are Motor Sport fans, let alone NASCAR fans, but I am and have been for a long time. The L&T, bless her heart, follows the sport enough to talk intelligently about it, knows who the drivers are, and will watch with me occasionally, but I'm pretty sure that's just ...
Another memory from those early mix-tapes you made for me. :)

Friday Morning Pick Me Up...
This first video is so full of AWESOME that even if you don't like The New Pronographers (and seriously, who the hell doesn't like TNP?), it's worth watching! Don't be fooled by the "trailer" that plays before the video AND make sure to stay for the credits. Just amazing what those wacky Canadia...
Tell me about it. :)
20 in 20 - 1991
While Jim and I were in Walt Disney World to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, it occurred to me that a lot of things have happened during those 20 years. So I decided to take a stroll through history and see what I could find. I'm going for "20 in 20", 20 years of quick highlights in 20...
I must say I'm a little stunned by the fact that they're both blond - when I pictured them in my head they had brown hair. (*shrug*) Oh well, great family picture!
In which I am a proud father
"I have to tell you," Jonathan Coulton's wife said to me on the last night of the cruise, "how wonderful your boys are." "I have two daughters," Peter Sagal's wife told Anne, "and I hope this isn't weird or creepy, but I really hope they meet guys like your sons." "Dude, you know you raised your...
This reminds me of the story I heard once about a woman who couldn't get into her car because the batteries on her remote had died. She ended up calling 911 (IIRC, it may have been AAA) for help getting into her car. When the guy arrived he took the key from her, physically put it into the lock and turned. This is why I still drive a car without a remote - I don't want to lose that portion of my brain.
technology makes you stupid
It's been over 80 for the last few days, and I'm going up to Portland for the rest of this week to see my sister, so I took advantage of the warm weather and went for a run yesterday afternoon. My brain quickly tuned out and started working on this story I'm about to publish, so my feet went the...
Just wanted to add my two cents on this picture - it is a lovely family portrait. That being said, I always pictured Nolan and Ryan as having brown hair, so seeing blond hair on them is really a shock. Great job raising them, Wil...

Can't wait for the new episode of Leverage! Love the interaction between you and Hardison.
a stupid cellphone video, and other various items
Last night, I made a new stupid cellphone video. Enjoy: Related. This Sunday, I return to LEVERAGE on TNT as the evil computer hacker Cha0s, in the holiday spectacular episode The Ho Ho Ho Job. Immediately after the episode airs, I'll be joining the cast for a live web chat. I'll give lin...
The girl in the green dress is somebody, just can't come up with her name.
Friday Morning Pick Me Up...
How about another compare and contrast edition of the FMPMU? The song is the English Beat classic "Save It For Later", one of my all time favorites from the 80's, let's see how Harvey Danger handles it; Honestly? Pretty darn good, I like their version and the video is fun (how many came...
You know I had to check out a song that features Bill Macy. Yeah, I called him "Bill." We're tight like that. :) That was *awesome*.
Friday Morning Pick Me Up...
...Apology Edition. Due to an issue with TypePad (and me for not checking) there was no FMPMU last week (not sure if it was noticed or not) so a slightly extended addition today. I've featured The Asteroids Galaxy Tour before, but I really enjoy their music. Here's another great track off their ...
I hadn't seen it either, and I had to watch it twice to see the goat. Not surprisingly I liked watching the golden bound toward the camera and then jumping over it. :)
Friday Morning Pick Me Up...
By now a lot of you have probably seen this video, but it's so good I still have to post it. OK Go has a long history of making great and unique videos but this one might top them all. Gizmodo has a great story on how the video was made, but the import thing to note is that the finished product ...
Workin' on it!

No Friday pix today - I'm recovering from my business trip to Orlando. I'll be back next week.

Color's Day Edition! With this weekend being the start of the College Football season, today is College Colors day! With that in mind I thought I'd run a special edition of the FMPMU celebrating my favorite time of the year. Yes, I love spring, and especially love summer, but Football Season (yo...
That is seriously cool.

Very cool 24-hour time-lapse of air traffic around the world. Each yellow dot is an plane in the air. You can really see the difference of the number of flights in the daytime versus at night.
