Is there a phone for everyone? Turns out, maybe there is! Funny how things turn around full circle. Let me give a little background into why I find the Great Call Jitterbug cell phone so very attractive. Jitterbug phone plans... Continue reading
Bealina - The Straight Talk Android phones run on the Sprint/Nextel network, while the other Straight Talk phones run on Verizon, AT&T, or Tmobile. The Sprint/Nextel network generally has good coverage around cities and major highways, but not so much in more rural areas.

Rana - The screen quality of the Samsung and LG look very similar to me. The quality of the pictures taken by the LG do look a little better to me, but it still definitely cell-phone-camera quality. Nicholas - I'm sure that Straight Talk will come out with a phone with a front facing camera someday. I'm not so sure they'll ever go with a 4 inch touchscreen, but who knows!

Jeff - If you want to buy an app, you have to add a credit card to your Android Market account. If you just want to get free apps, you don't ever have to add a credit card if you don't want to. CEL - If you press a text message and hold it, a message options box will pop up, and one of the options is to forward. If you receive a photo via text message, you can press and hold it and one of the options is to save attachment. Then it goes to your gallery where you can email it, post it to facebook, etc. Oh, and there are several messaging apps that you can get that allow you to customize your messaging in a variety of ways if the standard messaging client doesn't meet your needs. Dusty - The only option I can find regarding the keyboard during a call is under accessibility settings, but it is only to toggle whether pressing the power button ends the call or unlocks the call screen lock. One possible workaround is to use the speaker phone when you're calling to retrieve voicemail? Otherwise, you might try posting to Straight Talk's Facebook page to see if anyone there has any ideas.

I got an email today from Straight Talk with a promo code for $25 off the Precedent. Here's my post about it. http://tracfone-blog.fone-review.com/2011/10/straight-talk-promo-code-for-samsung-galaxy-precedent.html Also, I got an email that my LG Optimus Q has shipped, so I should have at least the beginnings of a review up in a few days.

Nicholas - I will definitely post a link here when I get the LG Optimus Q and have a review done. Carly - You can change the sound for text messages. I don't see any easy way to change the number of times it vibrates.

Jeff - Ha! Sorry for the rant. I think it gets under my skin a little when they call it a "review" when they don't even have the phone. Oh, and you can rest assured that as long as you are trying to be helpful and not trolling, your comments will never be deleted here!

Jeff - I'll still answer questions, I'm just a bit behind! If you follow the link that Nicholas posted, you have to delete the period at the end of the URL once you get to the other site. I'll warn you, though, the review there is fairly useless. I may be wrong, but it really looks like they don't even have the phone. They give a bunch of generalities with no specific details or pictures, and they don't have comments enabled to allow people to ask questions. It has all the feel of a site somebody put up purely to try to rank in the search engines and make money off the affiliate links. To be honest, it's easier to do it that way, but I prefer to not put a bunch of useless content out on the internet and would rather spend my time actually helping people. But to each their own...

Jeff - Please feel free to answer all the questions you want! It's always good to other viewpoints, and sometimes family obligations come up and I go a few days without having much time to respond to questions, so the more the merrier! Regarding your question about the screen resolution, I think you will find it to be OK. If you were coming from an iPhone 4 with Apple's retina display, then you might be disappointed in the Precedent's screen, but coming from LG 290 you'll be fine. Otherwise, probably the biggest gripe against the Precedent is the processor is a little slow. For example, Angry Birds has very slight little stutters from time to time, and the processor just simply can't keep up with the Netflix app. Overall, though, I agree with Arthur that at this price and on the Straight Talk plan, the Precedent is a great deal.

Jeff - Thanks for sharing about the differences in the Android versions! I don't review every new Straight Talk phone that comes out, but I do try to hit the ones that seem interesting. Since Android phones are new thing for ST, and I figured that people would have lots of questions, I thought it would be helpful to review both the Precedent and the Optimus. I do make money from my site to pay for the phones, but it takes a lot of time to do a good review and answer everyone's questions, so I don't think my wife would like it much if I reviewed EVERY new phone. :-)

Jeff and Nicholas - I bought the Precedent to review for my site, and I only bought one month of service. Hopefully, I've answered almost all the questions that have come up! I'm also planning on getting the new Straight Talk LG Optimus Q when it's available and doing a review of it, though they're saying it won't be shipping for 2 or 3 weeks.

Doodle - You cannot turn this phone into a wifi hotspot. Larry - You can watch Youtube videos on 3G. You don't have to be on wifi. Ted - I tried Skype, and it does a voice call, but it doesn't seem to give the option to do a video call. I looked on oovoo.com and the Precedent isn't shown as a supported phone for their mobile version. Adrian - I no longer have active service on the phone, so hopefully someone else can answer your question.

Nicholas - The Precedent won't run apps that require the phone to be on the Gingerbread version of Android. It does have a headphone jack, and its a pretty standard sized phone so it fits as easily into pockets as most any other cell phone. All the different kinds of apps you mentioned are available for Android 2.2. The Precedent works all over Springfield, so you should be good at all of those locations you mentioned. Matt - Take a look at my post about the Precedent's coverage area to get an idea if it will work in your area. http://tracfone-blog.fone-review.com/2011/09/straight-talk-samsung-galaxy-precedent-coverage-area.html Jeff - Yes, the Precedent will automatically start using a wifi connection if it's one you're already configured to connect to. Otherwise, it will ask you for the login credentials. The point of using wifi is that it's typically faster than 3G. Also if you are on a limited data plan, using the wifi reduces the data usage counted against your plan. That's not such an issue with teh Precedent because Straight Talk makes you use their unlimited plan. The browser is the same whether you're getting your data from wifi or 3G. Aerial - There's not a built-in way to put a password lock on text messages that I am aware of, but from what I've read there are apps that will let you do it. You can get wifi anywhere that there is a wifi signal for which you have the login credentials. For example, free wifi at Starbuck - Yes. Secured wifi from your random neighbor - No.

Makayla - There are all kinds of Android themes that you can download that will let you change the look and feel. I haven't had the phone reboot on me. It's hard to know why the other reviewer you saw is having that problem. It could be that he has a bad phone, or it could be that he's loaded it down with a million apps or something. Here's a link to my post about the Precedent's coverage area so you can see if you think it would have coverage in your area. http://tracfone-blog.fone-review.com/2011/09/straight-talk-samsung-galaxy-precedent-coverage-area.html I've received texts from AT&T phones with no problems. I think that some of the people who were having problems with not receiving texts had ported their number from their old phone and the porting process didn't complete until the called customer service. Victoria - When Straight Talk first released the Precedent, it was only on their website, but it's now in at least some WalMart stores too. Nicholas - I've got a Weather Channel widget and Facebook widget that have worked fine. As long as apps are for Android 2.2 and don't require more resources than the phone can offer, you shouldn't have problems. Youtube and Pandora work great. Angry Birds is a tiny bit slow, but I don't find it to be too annoying.

Kim - The Precedent does not have a flash for the camera. Dimi - When I get a chance to test Google Voice or if I see any reports of whether it works, I'll report back.

bweller - Youtube works on 3G, but I noticed that videos on m.espn.go.com only work on wifi. Pandora works on 3G. Sandra - They don't seem to have modified the Android operating system much. I haven't noticed anything that's been locked down, other than what I mentioned above about streaming video from sites other than YouTube seems to not work. Nicholas - the voice to text functionality works great. It's one of the top features of the phone in my opinion. Just be sure to leave on EN (English) instead of ES (Spanish)! Victoria - You click the Settings icon (it's on home page 2 on my phone), then go to Location & Security, and then select Use visible pattern in the Screen Unlock section. Dimi - I don't use Google Voice as of yet, but if I hear any reports of how it is or is not working for people, I'll be sure to report back here.

Bill - the GPS is included in the price! Lil tatoos - Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll be interested to see if this is a common problem. I'm guessing that something in the porting process didn't complete fully until your support calls finally got it resolved.

Victoria - It comes with a few apps: Facebook, Gmail, Android Market, Google Maps, News, YouTube. It has a contacts app, messaging, email client, and contacts. It also has icons for settings, Gallery, Camera, and Calculator. It also has a web browser and music player, and some more standard cell phone stuff. It comes with Google Talk, ThinkFree Office, Google places, and a navigation app. Nicholas - I haven't had any serious problems with the touch screen so far, though I do find it easier to text when I hold it sideways because the buttons are a little bigger. You can also use the voice commands to send a text by just saying it instead of typing it. It does come with a usb cord. As for the piece you talk to when you make a call, if you mean the microphone, it's on the bottom of the phone to the left of the usb port. You can change home screen by swiping left or right, or pressing the little dots in the bottom left or bottom right of the screen. I find it easier to press the dots, because sometimes it doesn't seem to recognize the swipe.

Aerial and Tammy - You're welcome! It's good to hear that my review has been helpful. Cassey - I haven't noticed any problems with the touch screen, other than it doesn't seem to respond sometimes when I am trying to swipe the unlock pattern, but I think that's just because the phone hasn't fully woken up yet. Like Androidfonefan said, you might try cleaning up old apps that are still running to see if that helps. AJ - The little hole in the top left above the volume keys doesn't seem to be for a charm, because it doesn't go all the way through where you could wrap a little strap for it. I'm not really sure what that hole is for, but my theory is it's an ambient noise microphone so that it can cancel out the ambient noise and understand the voice commands better.

Nicholas - I'm sure they'll put out another Android phone sometime, but I haven't heard of any in the rumor mill, so I don't think it will be real soon.

Ken - It's good to hear that you have found my site useful! By "mostly unlimited" data I mean that if you use multiple GB of data, you might get a call from Straight Talk to be sure you're not tethering to a laptop or something. For most people, this won't be a problem, but it comes up sometimes for people who are "bending" the rules in Straight Talk's terms of service. I'd say there's a decent chance that there will be refurbished Precedent's available sometime. I've seen several reports of people who didn't realize that it runs on Sprint, and have returned the phone, so those will undoubtedly end up for sale as refurbs in the future.

Androidfonefan - I've used Android Assistant and Appmonster on the Precedent, and they both seem to work fine. George - I haven't tried Google Voice with the Precedent, but it's troubling to hear that Sprint won't allow it. Aerial - I searched the Android Market for Multiple Wallpapers, and there are several free apps that will do it. I downloaded one called Multiple Wallpaper, and it allowed me to put a different wallpaper on each home screen. The Precedent is a physical clone of the Boost Prevail, so any accessories for the Prevail will work with the Precedent. You can do a search here: http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&x=0&ref_=nb_sb_ss_i_0_18&y=0&field-keywords=boost%20prevail%20accessories&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=boost%20prevail%20acce&_encoding=UTF8&tag=airshowguide-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957 The Precedent doesn't really have a draw pad like the old palm pilots did. The entire screen is a touch screen, and you can get drawing apps if you are wanting to draw something freehand. Straight Talk offers free shipping, or you can pay extra for faster delivery. Here's a link that will take you directly to the Straight Talk online store: http://www.fone-review.com/Straight-Talk-Samsung-Galaxy-Review

AJ - The Precedent has an email client that I think you can configure to pull email from about any source. I don't use it, though, because I use the gmail app that comes standard. Dimi - I've had a similar thought that if you don't want to use the Precedent as a cell phone anymore, it becomes a nice alternative to the iPod Touch. Well, maybe not the latest Touch, but the previous version. It's good to hear that I've been able to answer your questions! Kevin - Unfortunately, I don't know what would make the phone keep powering off. I've not seen that problem with mine. Unfortunately, you'll probably need to call Straight Talk's customer service, or you might want to submit a support request on their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/StraightTalkWireless?sk=app_124192170958476
