Interests: politics, social justice, brevity... my goal is to help facilitate a reality where people are able to carry on a global conversation absent their governments, or the media.

A recent email forwarded by Orange County GOP official Marilyn Davenport depicting President Obama's face on the body of a monkey has sparked outrage from the California NAACP. The photo included the caption "Now you know why no birth cirtificate." At first glance the racial tone is pretty glaring and offense, but consider this image that was widely circulated about five years ago: Where was the moral outrage over this depiction? (You'd think at least one or two animal rights groups would have taken offense to the comparison...) It's pretty interesting to note the stark contrast in reactions from one... Continue reading

Sometimes those waves hit you- they hit me a bit last night and they hit me again this morning. Those waves of frustration and anger- why are things the way they are? The hard part for me is I'm a very compassionate and expressive person. When my first love and I broke up long ago, it was really hard on her (and me). I remember seeing flowers in the supermarket and geting tremendously sad because I always loved to buy her flowers... this was the first girl in 7 years that I'd ever bought flowers for again. It's symbolic to... Continue reading

This morning between the snooze I had a dream about an earthquake. I dreamt that I was at a bar in a restaurant and an earthquake was about to happen. There was a small boy standing by the bar next to me. He was only 7 or 8 and was just standing there by himself. As the quake began to happen, I crouched to the ground and held the boy in my arms and told him we were going to go for a ride and that everything was okay. As the ground began to shake violently, I remember hugging the... Continue reading

Love is like he sun It hurts to stare at It comes and goes as it pleases It will burn you if you're not careful! But no matter how many times it leaves you, it will always return Because it is always with you, whether you can see it or not Whether you can feel it or not, Whether you believe it or not When you're down Lonely Hurt Sad Depressed Torn up Fighting yourself Trapped in your head Crying out to god "Why? Why?!" And you feel like there's no sense in this world... Love is always there Because... Continue reading

I can feel your sadness. It filled me with dread last tuesday- hours before you left me- inexplicable yet overwhelming sadness washed over me that day and I'd yet had no reason to be upset. I felt in my bones that something was horribly wrong. I left work early that day because I couldn't think straight, and when I saw you and you didn't even look at me I knew without asking. You didn't talk so I left. When I got home I read your note "every little thing is gonna be alright." I reread your facebook messages and listened... Continue reading

Caught in a rip tide of emotion, desperately trying to reach the shore Being carried out to sea again and ever coming back for more But you can't escape a rip tide, you've got to let it carry you away Embrace the path that lies before you and trust you'll touch the shore one day Continue reading

Love is really a selfish act- the love we feel. All too often, we cling to it. We do not think about the other person, we think about what we want. I don't want to do that Continue reading

Sometimes my brain can get away from me, spinning out of control in a thought storm that takes me so quickly from one notion to the rest that I feel completely incapacitated and at the whim of an unstoppable force. A friend once told me "that's why I take medication." Perhaps this is what ADD feels like. Perhaps those 2nd grade school administrators were right. Continue reading

I never eat the extra fortune cookies when I get Chinese food on my own I always imagine they're intended for someone else- I only deserve one really For better or worse, any more would just be greedy I'll save them for some other day Some day when I might not have any fortune and need a pick me up Someone else could use them ....I have a drawer of these wasted fortune cookies. But all that ends today Because loving yourself means making use of every bit of furtune you're given It doesn't matter what you deserve, who you... Continue reading

As I was brousing through the conservative blogosphere, I came a cross an interesting article "Voter Anger Fuels Support for 'Repeal Amendment.'" Voter anger and Republican promotion has given some steam to what is being dubbed the "Repeal Amendment" which is a proposed Constitutional Amendment that would allow a vote of two thirds of the states to repeal any act of Congress. According to the article, the proposed Amendment has already been ratified by nine state legislatures (it would require 33 states to petition Congress to call a Constitutional Convention on the amendment) and is gaining traction in other states.... We've all seen the various compilations of "Most Used Phrase in film" videos on youtube. To wit, these encyclopedic references can highlight common phrases across all of cinema, or they might simply nail down how repetative a particular phrase can be in one film or another. Or, really they might... Continue reading

I've always been obsessed with movies. After my parents' divorce I was alone quite a bit as a child and I made a new haven for myself in the world of cinema. I would shut myself up in my room and dress up as a particular character in a film... Continue reading

As the White House appointed Debt Commission chairs gave early indications of what significant government spending changes might be recommended in the coming months, Republicans are going to have a very difficult balancing act to do. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the special interest group with the largest gains in Congress this season were Retirees, the majority of whom tend to vote Republican. Retired groups gained favor with twenty new seats in Congress, followed closely by Leadership PACs (which are literally institutionalized nepotism) with twelve new seats. I am not trying to paint a picture of Republican failure... Continue reading

The White House's Debt Commission Report isn't due out yet, but the Committee's two chairmen, former Sen. Alan Simpson and former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles are releasing recommendations today. The idea is to cut $4 Trillion from the deficit by 2020 and knock the debt-GDP ratio down to 2.2% by 2015 (we're roughly at 10%). Here are some of the highlights: Roll discretionary spending back to FY2010 levels for FY2012, requires 1% cut in discretionary budget authority every year from FY2013 though 2015 Reduce farm subsidies by $3 billion per year by reducing direct payments and other... I have to say I was rather startled and fascinated by a recent study conducted by YouGov on brand loyalty broken down by political leanings. Republicans' number one brand? Fox News Channel Democrats number one brand? Google As if that weren't enough to paint an interesting picture in your mind, how about the History Channel being Republicans' number two while Discovery Channel was the Democratic top channel at number three. Much of the brands in the top ten are similar, but I think there's something rather telling in each top company- Fox News vs. Google. I'll let that simmer for... Continue reading

As I walked into work this morning, I overheard on the television "the U.S. is really trying to blow Iran out of the water right now!" I nearly spit out my tea dreading the discovery that the U.S. had secretly launched a covert attack against Iran. What I saw was something very different. Today, the U.S. basketball team took on Iran in the FIBA World Championships. And I bet you had no idea. I sure as heck hadn't. In fact, a google search for "US Iran FIBA" found only two serious mentions: one from the International Basketball Federation's own site,... Continue reading

Carol Browner, special adviser to the president for energy and climate change, told NBC's Today Show last Wednesday that government scientists' initial assessment showed "more that three-quarters of the oil [in the gulf] is gone. The vast majority of the oil is gone." The federal National Incident Command, which has been coordinating the Gulf cleanup, has said that of the 4.9 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico, half had been safely burned off, skimmed, or recovered and another 25% had evaporated. Yet, researchers this week at the University of Georgia are reporting that as much as... Continue reading

Today Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled in favor of gay rights activists citing that Prop 8, the CA voter approved ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. "Having considered the trial evidence and the arguments of counsel, the court pursuant to FRCP 52(a) finds that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional and that its enforcement must be enjoined." The California Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in 2008 but voters outlawed it just months later with the approval of Proposition 8. Prop 8 has been a matter of contention since it's proposal and gay rights activists have been battling it in court... Continue reading

At what point will people stop fooling themselves and open their eyes to the fact that relying on century-old fuel technology is detrimental to our very survival? On April 20th, the Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico soon to become to worst environmental disaster in American history. Ironically, the disaster occurred just a month after President Obama proposed opening up new coastal land for oil prospecting permits. The spill leaked 2.5 million gallons of oil into the gulf every day for almost a hundred days- that's roughly a quarter of a billion gallons of oil leaked into the... Continue reading

When an idiot spills coffee in their lap, they manage to sue the brewer for millions of dollars. So when big oil manages to spill a billion gallons of oil and toxic chemicals into one of the most valuable bodies of water in the northern hemisphere costing livelihoods and setting back entire generations of industry along the coast, how is that company still in existence? Today the environmental group Greenpeace managed to shut down forty six British Patroleum stations in and around London. Seventy-five activists simultaneously disabled the stations by removing the pump switches and replacing the BP logo with... Continue reading

This is America damnit. It's sad that I even need to say anything further then that. In response to the planned Muslim community center near ground zero, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich charged that no mosques should be allowed near ground zero until churches and synagogues are allowed in Saudi Arabia. In a recent blog post, he decries the "double standards that allow Islamists to behave aggressively toward us while they demand our weakness and submission." And to that my only response can be: should Saudi Arabia be the new standard for American religious tolerance? Since when do... Continue reading
