Join the "Million Gallon Challenge" and help stop flooding in Iowa
State Senator Rob Hogg, Chair of the Senate Rebuild Iowa Committee, and Jean Wiedenheft, Margaret Wolter, and Don Johnson of the Indian Creek Nature Center participated in a press conference yesterday to discuss individual and state actions that can reduce future flood damage. Join the challenge...
Step 3: green laundry
Back to my little experiment in green laundry...I created some homemade laundry soap from a recipe that I gleaned from Discovery.com that was really simple: 1 cup borax 1 cup washing soda 2 cups grated soap I didn't have any problem finding the ingredients in my local Hy-Vee store and it took m...
The screening went very well. We were please to have about 35 people, most of which are new to our little group. None of the council members that we invited were able to make it, but State Senator Rob Hogg was there so we are hoping to keep the momentum going. Glad to hear that yours went well in Iowa City!
Iowa City and Cedar Rapids chicken lovers unite!
I am pleased to say that Iowa City Friends of Urban Chickens and the Cedar Rapids Chicken Chat groups are both bringing the film "Mad City Chickens" to their respective areas next month. Please mark your calendars and tell your friends. It's important that the council members from both communi...
Hi, Barry. I couldn't find the code either when I got my chicks...I didn't think that there was one! We've had a member of our ChickenChat group doing research. The city law is vague and prohibits all types of agriculture without special permission (this could be construed to mean having a vegetable garden!) The ordinance is 32.04 and has an extensive chart with it outlining what types of agriculture is restricted. There are also various animal ordinances scattered about that address noise, sanitation, smell and housing of animals. If you'd like a copy of what we have, I'll be happy to send it to you! You can contact me at greenat50@yahoo.com.
Chickens in Cedar Rapids
It has begun. The movement to allow a few laying hens in urban communities has arrived in Cedar Rapids. A few weeks ago, the Indian Creek Nature Center held a class called "Raising Chickens in your Backyard" and a surprising 29 people attended...all interested in raising a few hens for eggs in...
Augh...that must of been upsetting. I agree that CFLs are a bridge solution. So much work is being done on LEDs that hopefully a decent and affordable lighting alternative will be coming along soon. I don't have young children in the house, but perhaps for those who do, using incandescents within arms (or balls) reach might be a good idea for now.
Are compact fluorescent bulbs really safe?
I know that I've advocated using fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) for sometime because they are so much more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. And still, in the back of my mind, I worry about the effects on the environment of their mercury content. Mercury is quite toxic causing problems with th...
Thank-you, Marlene, and I hope that you'll visit often. It is amazing how much we can reduce our impact on the enviroment once we become aware. You are right...together we can make a difference. What kinds of projects are you working on to reduce your enviromental impact?
Eco-friendly budget bargains
Well, as I continue my green journey into territory that is a bit more challenging for my budget, I am finding that there are still a few bargains to be had...who knew?? It takes a lot more digging for things like cleaning products and earth-friendly paper products but it is possible...mostly th...
The photo was taken by my son at the post-flood location of the Cedar Rapids library. The library has used recylcled materials in the library construction, including the beautiful light fixture in the photo. Thanks, James! I like it, too.
Dialing down the electric bill
We've had our share of natural disasters lately in Eastern Iowa. The winter of 2008 was brutal and ice storms caused massive power outages and damage to power lines and poles. The next spring, record floods invaded the local power plant in Cedar Rapids causing severe damage. It was nasty. To re...
It is true that there is a $3.00 charge for the Time of Day service in our area (they install a special meter at your home) and you do save less if you use less...we have found that by shaving a little off here and there by taking reducing consumption and taking advantage of various programs results in a bigger savings than each effort would result in individually. Thanks, Jake...good luck!
