... I think you can probably guess what we've been doing in our house recently - yes, the world of phonics has arrived. These cups (which are from m&s) with letter sounds stitched on in black wool are helping us with word 'families' - cat, sat, mat, bat, etc - because you can stack the initial sound and remove a cup to reveal a new word. It's been good. My eldest even did some of the stitching herself. Continue reading

... my eldest made these simply by threading them along a needle and thread. It's a christmassy colour scheme because these packs were being sold of for 30p each and we wanted a garland for our tree next year - but brights or pastels would look great for Easter. Continue reading

... the alphablocks are the characters in the new phonics programme from CBeebies (you can say what you like about the BBC, but their children's programmes are fantastic). The girls love them. We made our own using raisin boxes wrapped in paper and drew on them with felt tip pens. My eldest can now read the words 'pam' and 'map'. What else do you need. Continue reading

250g unsalted butter 1 cup of caster sugar 2 cups of plain flour 2 large eggs a few drops of almond essence icing sugar cream the butter and sugar together, mix in the eggs, a few drops of almond essence and then the flour to make a smooth dough. roll out and cut into shapes. bake on a baking tray for about 10 minutes at 170 degrees. cool on a wire rack and dust with icing sugar. of course, these would be nice with some ground almonds replacing some of the flour and a whole almond studded in the centre,... This Christmas has been the first time that the girls have really started to enjoy playing with each other - now that the baby is 18 months and her sister is 3 they're close enough in age to enjoy the same things. we've had the most wonderful week just being with each other - i know it can't last, I know that nursery and work and the outside world will again bring their demands (and enjoyments) but I'll remember this week forever.
