I'm a screenwriter with a love -- er, obsession -- for vintage fashion, pop culture and sewing ephemera. Pit bulls, good horror movies, modern dance and great chocolate rate high on my list, too.

I NEED McCall 9321. The one on the left. Not the pattern. That very dress. Doesn't it just sing of summer evenings and fireflies and sherbert and dancing and no worries in the world? Swoon, swoon, swoon. Although the dress... Continue reading

Cough, cough! A spring cold has me hacking and snorting here at Pattern Junkie HQ, but I can dream of elegance with McCall 8271. A little cape for a little extra charm? Why yes, thank you! Continue reading

How dreamy is the diagonal seaming on this fitted blouse from the late 1940s, Vogue S-4831? Fitting would be a nightmare, but oh, the result! Swoon, swoon! Continue reading

I, uh, what? Butterick 4237 baffles me: Butterick 4237, 1966 The shape of the "doll" is odd enough, but after some consideration I can get behind round pillows with yarn fringe and eyes. But what's with the group of characters?... Continue reading

Oh. Oh. Marian Martin T9027, you had me at hello: I hope the lower curve of buttons are outlining real pockets, don't you? Continue reading

If Monday featured floral appliqués done right, today features them done so, so wrong. Keep in mind that Butterick 9550 is a pattern for women, not girls: Wearing this, I'd imagine you'd get a lot of comments like, "Wow, I... Continue reading

I'm sorry, but McCall's 6469 is anything but a "carefree" pattern -- at least for Blond Braids down there in the corner. McCall's 6469, 1979 Continue reading

I have a lot of pattern pics stored on my computer in files with titles like "Doll Terror," "What's On Her Head?," "International Superspy" and "Dress of Evil" -- but one of the biggest categories by far is "Up To... Continue reading

Squee! Today's eye candy, McCall 1541, thrilled me so much when I spotted it on the Vintage Wiki that I had to search it out from Jen at Mom's Patterns and make it mine. The rose applique! The leaves! The... Continue reading

One of the things I love finding on vintage patterns are notations made by prior owners. Sometimes they're as mysterious as a secret message. Other times they offer a glimpse of a seamstress' well-laid plans. Yet other times they're the... Continue reading

Start your week with a peek with this beautiful number: Modes Royale 1014, a slinky asymmetrical 1940s dress. The skirt is, of course, the first thing that catches my eye, but I also love the collar detailing. You can find... Continue reading

Oh, Herb Tarlek...how I loved WKRP! I have to go look up "crimplene" now, as I'm not quite sure what it is but suspect I have a few rarely worn vintage dresses made of it... To be honest, I actually like a lot of 70s fashion...and you're right, lots of current fashion will be mockable in the future. (I already mock my 1990s self...I swear, every photo of me during that era has me wearing overalls. I loved them!)

I don't think I need to explain why I threw McCall's 3442 into the "unfortunate fashion" pile: McCall's 3442, 1972 To be fair, the actual pattern -- the pants and "shirt-jacket" -- are fine. But the (entirely fictional) fabric is... Continue reading

In keeping with the romance theme for Valentine's Week, here's a pattern from the 1930s, Pictorial Review 9051: What's so romantic about this windbreaker? Ah, I'll let the pattern description do the talking: A sure way to any man's or... Continue reading

Valentine's Day is coming, so it's time to go over-the-top on the romance front here at Pattern Junkie. Look no further than Modes Royale 1321, which advises you to "Look romantic and walk in a whisper." (Try doing that before... Continue reading

Even great designers have their missteps. Behold Bill Blass and Vogue 1461, the Bermuda jumpsuit (shudder): I admit it. There's an evil little part of me that wants to devote my limited sewing time to making this for Mr. PatternJunkie... Continue reading
