This past weekend at Lakeside Church, we began a new series called God 3.0. We’re talking about the Holy Spirit. We’re talking about how the Spirit lives in our lives and in our world today. I want to include some... Continue reading

I have a closet door that is supposed to slide. It doesn’t. Somehow it got stuck. It’s a floor-to-ceiling mirrored door. I’d like it to work, but it’s a repair job I can’t tackle myself. Eventually—maybe—I’ll call someone in to... Continue reading

Hi Chad, Thanks for checking the scriptures. The challenge with some of these verses is that a single verse only presents part of the story. For example, check out Ephesians 5:21. According to Paul's overarching statement, mutual submission is the hallmark of a Christian marriage. It is offered both ways between a godly husband and wife.

In Genesis 1:26 the Bible quotes God. He says, “Let us make mankind in our image...” Whatever that means—and there has been much debate—it does not mean that God is like humans. It means humans are somehow like God. Yet... Continue reading

At the close of the weekend worship gatherings at Lakeside Church I sometimes deliver magic words: The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make his face to shine upon you And be gracious unto you; The Lord lift... Continue reading

The Sports World spun off its axis this weekend. Donald Sterling, it learned, is a racist. Sterling is the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team. The public story says he didn’t want his girlfriend associating with African-Americans. He... Continue reading

Sometimes a bit of scripture gets lodged in my brain. I can’t get it out. After a while I begin to wonder if the Lord wants me to get it out. Or if he just wants it to stay put,... Continue reading

Italy. It sounds so romantic. Oh wait, did it ever dawn on you--like it did me this week--that romance and romantic come from the word Roman? Whatever is Roman seems romantic. I think that's why so many of us want... Continue reading

On Wednesday night we left my younger brother, Greg, to sit with Mom. The time of her passing was getting closer, but only God knew the exact timing, so we wanted to make sure one of us was with her... Continue reading

Hey Christine, Thanks for the reminder about that conversation. I remember hanging out with you after that worship service, but I forgot the comments about honoring your mother. Good words. God is always good, right? His blessing rolls on. Grace to you. B

Lynette, I remember that walk with your dad. It doesn't seem like three years to me. But I know the feeling of holy ground. We've stepped onto it carefully over the last few days.

Carol, my mom was waiting for us kids to tell her that she should choose to quit dialysis. Yet it had to be her decision. She has had great peace with it. Thanks for the prayers. Blessings to you.

Thanks Willa. I don't know how long it takes for the rawness to subside. I just think you can lean into it and trust the Lord's grace as you walk along this road. God bless you. B

Hi Dawn, Great to hear from you. Sorry to hear about your dad. I understand the "little stubborn" part. Sounds like my mom. Yet that is part of what makes her her. Grace to you. B

Yesterday got quiet. After four days of visiting with family and friends, Mom’s energy faded yesterday. I think the parties exhausted her. But she loved the parties. I believe it was exactly what she imagined and hoped for. We still... Continue reading

Bittersweet. When I think of the word I think first of chocolate chips. Don’t they call those bittersweet? Or it might be semi-sweet? Bitter and sweet don’t go together, but we keep the word because it works. It describes so... Continue reading

One of my frightening take-aways from the Catalyst One Day event came from Craig Groeschel, pastor of LifeChurch.tv. “We have a limitless capacity for self-deception,” he said. I figure there are two possible responses to this. One, he could just... Continue reading
