Oh they would Dawn!!!! We've never hear them talk, but we sure hear them screech as they fly overhead in search of fish.
Backyard Birding: Harbingers of Spring
The bulbs are starting to pop their little heads up and you are even beginning to see little buds on the trees. But it is the birds we are looking for. One of my most favorite nature memories is hearing the distinctive honk of the Canada Geese. Most of the time you can hear them before yo...
That is probably one of the most profound things I've learned through TMG, the very things the boys and I take for granted...cardinals, ospreys..and feel are very common, are simply amazing to others. I love this! Makes us appreciate our simple sapsuckers all the more.

An Ivorybill woodpecker!!! My boys would flip! So stinking cool!
And Nancy, I have been pleasantly surprised that I can now HEAR cardinals, red winged black birds, ospreys and hawks BEFORE I see them. I never would have paid such close attention if it hadn't been for my little bird enthusiasts. Love that.
On Backyard Birding.
Before we moved to Vermont, I always thought of backyard birding as a fairly humble enterprise. My daughter, I think, had similar feelings. As much as we love a fat little chickadee or a busy sparrow, both of us have always had a fondness for particularly large birds, or those with a little...

Felt Solar System
My daughter is a bit of a solar system nut. She has made numerous models, mobiles, and posters. She even made up her own song to remember the planets. This last fall she had the idea of making a felt solar system. Annie suggested I share it here and after her wonderful review of A Child's Introd...
Oh how fun Christina! I've seen the ruby-crowned kinglet in our bird book, but never met one in person. What a treat! Luckily every place I've lived we've always had cardinals visit us in the winter...even in cold blustery Wisconsin.
Thanks for sharing.
Winter Bird Spotting
If you have followed TMG long, you know how much we all love bird watching! Most of us think about looking for the birds in the Spring, when they all return from their vacations in the South. And believe me, here in Virginia we are patiently awaiting the return of our beloved Ospreys. But Wi...
Ian just brought this book home from the library a few days ago!!!! We love it. Winter is such a great time to look to the sky.
You rock Annie!
On the Shelf: A Child's Introduction to the Night Sky.
For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it may seem a bit strange to think about spending evenings outdoors stargazing this time of year, that much I'll admit. But I also think that the night sky is sometimes the most noticeable during the winter months. Think about how very brilliant t...

Solstice eclipse
Did you get a chance to see the total lunar eclipse last night? If you were in North America, had a clear sky, and you were up during the wee hours, it was a special gift, falling as it did... Continue reading

Gifts From Nature: A Nature Exchange
Most of us have friends and family that spread around the country, maybe even the globe. We have such an amazing time learning about what is right out our backdoor and delight in sharing it with others. It is also great fun to get a package full of nature's goodness from far away. This would...
Gifts From Nature: Yule Log
Kelly of We Are Here submitted this great tutorial on how to create a Yule Log. Kelly says... "It is very simple to do - the main consideration is making sure that you use materials that can burn safely and... Continue reading

Turkey Trivia Quiz
Turkeys are such interesting birds, aren't they. Some would say they are so ugly they are quite beautiful. One of my boys favorite things to do is to search for and collect turkey feathers on my parents land in Texas. At one of our favorite farms, there are several turkeys what stroll around p...
Mayamade's DIY Natural Wreaths
I love wreaths made out of found objects of the season and when I saw these gorgeous examples from mayamade, I knew we needed to share them with you all. Seed pods, grasses, and feathers could all be used to... Continue reading

On the Shelf: Bugs for Lunch.
Every so often my mom calls to tell me about a great picture book she's run across and is planning to send along for Mariam. They are inevitably wonderful reads with beautiful pictures, and they usually have the advantage of being something that I might not have necessarily thought to get f...

A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. ~Amanda Soule
We've been watching the geese fly South overhead. We hear them before we see them, but they are such a joy to watch. I love your thoughts about bottling up our nature sightings and giving them as gifts...we'll have to find a way to do that ;-)
On The Move: Fall Migration
One of the most mind boggling aspects of the natural world is migration. Whether it be Monarch butterflies or humpback whales, it is pretty amazing that these creatures, not only make these treks more than once a year, but that they somehow know exactly when and where to go. And now that I am ...

Gifts from Nature ~ Kindling Bundles
As the weather turns cold and we spend a few more hours of our day inside our minds can't help but turn toward making things for the upcoming holidays. There are many different traditions and reasons to celebrate coming up in the next few months and we try to make, rather than purchase, as man...
Oh Karen, what a beautiful story. And such a testament to the values you are teaching them. What great kids you have there...Im sure that day the inspiration they shared stretched further than the market. Much love!
Be Inspired by Your Children
