Today was our last full day in Rome. And if I'd had my way, I would have spent it wandering the narrow medieval streets, popping into boutiques. Or taking the tram up to the new MAXXI contemporary art museum. Instead,... Continue reading

We're in Rome, Italy -- three weeks into a five-week stay. Our three children are all experiencing it quite differently. Our oldest is soaking up the history and just being here, loving feeling like an "expert" on all things Roman.... Continue reading

Let me start off right now by saying that I realize I don't deserve a whole lot of sympathy for the completely stressful situation I'm in. Nor do I have much right at all to complain about. This is a... Continue reading

How about pb&j for breakfast, and breakfast for lunch? If you pack soy nut butter or sunflower butter, I'd just send in a note with it, or let the teacher know ahead of time. So many people use those now that I think they will have heard of them.

Tooth fairy in our house gives dollar coins, too. I went to the bank and got $10 worth, and have them hidden away. If the kids ever find the stash of coins, the secret is out.

We get in a fair bit -- but it never feels like enough. Usually we are in Old City (especially around Franklin Square) with the kids. Just two days ago, we went to the Independence Seaport Museum and had a fantastic time just hanging out along the riverfront, watching different boats go by. We'd never done that before, and it was great. I'm hoping to take my bigger kids on a Duck Tour before the end of the summer.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, my wedding band started getting snug. I told my cousin about it while we were at the local supermarket. She whipped out a quarter, popped it into a toy vending machine, and -- even though the machine sold a variety of items -- a plastic, gold-looking ring just my new size came out. I wore it through two pregnancies, and have kept it in a special place ever since.

I was at a neighbor's house once. Her 2 oldest children got into a huge fight, one had hit the other. My neighbor gave them each a huge talking to about their fighting, and scolded the one who hit, saying "It's never okay to hit, never." She gave that kid a timeout. Within 5 minutes, her third child (who'd been cranky all afternoon) came in and started whining. My neighbor spanked her and put her in her room. What kind of message is that sending? That was a few years ago, and I still absolutely do not get it.

My daughter's catchphrase is "what's the plan Mommy?" Every day as soon as she stepped off the kindergarten bus at 12:06, it was "what's the plan Mommy?" So I get it! I tried the lazy unstructured summer last year (it sounds good), but I learned that we need a schedule, too. Have a great summer!
