Summer is upon Jackson Hole and it is flying by fast. Mid-July already and I struggle to think what I have done fun this year. Couple longer bike rides and such but nothing of note. Last year at this time I was getting ready to fly over to the Tour De France for a week. Looking back at it I should have stayed at home. Oh well. Hot as fuck in Jackson in the afternoons. Looks like the mid 80s today with humidity in the low teens. And I have an afternoon tour. Lobster anyone? Things are busy now but... Continue reading

Bought a new wheelset from Industry Nine this winter - full carbon rims and colorful anodized spokes for my Fatback Skookum - and got them set up tubeless this spring. I am running tires from 45North with a FloBiest up front and a Dunderbiest in the rear. I used them... Continue reading

A lot of the lower trails in the Cache Creek area are dry enough to ride on which is very surprising given the amount of snow we had this winter. I was expecting no trail riding until mid-June at the earliest. Yay! Continue reading

when you're doing anything it seems. Since my last post I worked like a fiend at the ski hill, went to St. Anton and came back, cleaned up my ski stuff and got my winter gear in storage, took out my summer gear out of storage, started going through my bike fleet for repairs, started riding a lot, and getting another planter made and full of bulbs. Funny how the days just vaporize. We had very warm days in April and the first half of May so all the snow in the valley is gone. My lawn has been snow... Continue reading

Another month, another thaw. Mountain snow and valley rain all this week. No sun though. I think we have had 7-10 nice sunny days, and so far only one sunny warm spring-skiing day. I miss the sun. Continue reading

Went for a ride up Cache Creek last Saturday (the last sunny day) and had a gas riding the new singletrack. It adds about a half-mile of singletrack through some fields east of Bridge 5 and it was a lot of fun. Don't think I'll be riding this week: in... Continue reading

to break through but no dice. Cold and overcast today with snow in the forecast. I miss the sun. We have so much snow I read the dams are going to start releasing water early to make room for the expected huge runoff. Hopefully no flooding this year. Continue reading

of winter. Holy crap it has been a long one. I can hardly wait for warmer weather and riding my bike. Old timer say this winter is what winters used to be like all the time. No wonder people didn't want to live here in the winter. Continue reading

Lotsa interesting weather this winter and interesting riding conditions. Very wet days with lots of rain so full studs are the order of the day. About a month ago I was riding some singletrack and fell off my bike. Not so bad except for scraping the shit out of my... Continue reading

That is, its super butt ass cold here in Jackson. Minus 14 yesterday at the house, and I had a meeting at the village yesterday so as I drove over the Snake River bridge the car thermometer registered minus 26. This morning it was minus 22 at the house so I assume it was below minus 30 around low spots in the valley. Dang that's cold. Continue reading

That has been our weather patter since Thanksgiving: get pummeled by snow, warm up at the end of the storm and get rain, then butt-ass cold (minus 10 or so) for a couple days and start all over again. Actually, it has only rained once after Thanksgiving but it was a long 10 hour rain with about an inch coming down. Regardless of the snain, we are sitting on a record amount of snow for December at Snow King. Conditions are rivaling the epic winter of '96-'97 but we aren't home free. We could get shafted in January and February,... Continue reading

With the forced time off due to warm weather, I have a bit of time to kill so I have been on a homebrewing jag. I have a porter and winter red ale in the fermenters and another spiced winter warmer ale just boiled yesterday. All have a OG around... Continue reading

With the warm temps, no snow or even frozen trails so trail riding is out. Even if it gets cold enough at night to freeze we get enough sun on some parts of the trails so a half inch of dirt thaws out and turns to mud. Our temps are... Continue reading

its been warm in Jackson. It barely gets to below freezing at night, none of the ski areas are making snow (I think there is about an acre foot between us and Jackson Hole), and I can still plant bulbs without too much trouble. I do have to cover up the area I want to plant to defrost the ground but it is easy planting. Absolutely amazing for mid November in Jackson. Strangely in places where the sun doesn't hit all day frost is growing; just down the street from me is a spot which is in shade all day... Continue reading

I bought this bottle some years ago, stuffed it in a box, put it in the pantry, and forgot about it until about a month ago. I pulled it out and though I had better drink it (especially after the Infinium fisasco). In a 24 oz bottle; 6.7% alcohol. Appearance:... Continue reading

Even with all the homebrewing I do, I still enjoy commercial beers. A lot of beers are now coming in cans, and I think it is great. Cans keep UV light away from beer (less skunkiness), are lighter than bottles, and are easily recyclable. A win-win-win. Don't think I will... Continue reading

I recently swapped out a drivetrain on a bike going from SRAM 2x9 to a SRAM GX 2x11 setup. I have a GX 2x11 setup on another bike and loved it so much I put it on another bike. And there problems began. The shifting, both front and rear, have... Continue reading

Thank God October is done. We have had a few snow storms but really no cold weather, just oodles of rain. A LOT of rain. More than I can remember in years. Close to four inches in October (we normally get 1.2 inches in October). Normally we have a pretty good cold snap in October where it drops to the single digits and all the snowmaking systems fire up and people get excited. Not this October. Mud, rain, and damp. Pretty fucking icky. Can't ride on any dirt and the roads are getting boring. It has gotten bad enough I... Continue reading

Sometime last night I misplaced my iphone and couldn't find it anywhere. I went to bed thinking I would find it in the morning but I worried about it all night (it even was part of a dream I had). Still couldn't find this this morning and panic was starting to set in so I signed into icould (thankfully I remembered that password) and sent a sound to my phone. Found it sitting next to the toilet. I wouldn't have thought to look there at all. Crimney. And every time I sit a the computer and try and type, one... Continue reading

Living with cats can sometimes be funny, exasperating, cute, or just odd. Found out one new kitten really likes thin pretzels. A lot. And the other looks at me funny if I make straining sounds while he is using the litterbox. Hee Hee. Messy poops with the wet food. I am thinking of calling them Mr and Mrs. Soft Serve. Or Frappachino One and Two. Continue reading

I bought three pairs of gloves from Defeet this past spring for fall/winter riding, and liked them at first glance because of the high vis colors I got (red, yellow, and orange) and the fact you can use a smartphone with them on. They look good but fuck are they cold. I simply can't wear them in temps below 50 otherwise my hands freeze, even on short distances. Maybe I got them a size too small but damn they're cold. I got larges; maybe XL next time. Deirdre may be getting some gloves Philthy. I love their socks though; great... Continue reading

While digging through some boxes in my pantry I came across a box full of beer, one of which was this nice bottle. I was going to stick it back in the box and forget it until I read the little info hanger that said enjoy it before July 2011.... Continue reading

I rode the snot out of my Skookum this summer and loved it (to a point). It was a great bike for the first part of the summer when I was still getting in shape since the crank was set up with a 24 tooth chainring and with an 11-42... Continue reading

Our beautiful fall weather is good and cooked now after having several days of rain and snain (rain snow mix). Not much fun to ride in although I got 43 miles in Saturday and it wasn't bad. I didn't get rained on but good god was it windy coming home. I have three bikes set up with fenders but only one is suitable for the full on winter-type riding we seem to be experiencing now. We might have a few more days of so so weather but I am thinking it may be more worthwhile to switch to trail running... Continue reading

On sunday I went for a road ride (seeing as how most of our dirt is too wet now) and saw a couple interesting things in the park. I saw a huge number of cars pulled over/parked on highway 89 south of Gros Ventre Junction and thought what the heck. Turns out it was a good size bull moose in his prime next to the road. Moose, especially bull moose with full racks, are an uncommon sight in JH nowadays and seeing any moose is enough to start a frenzy among our out-of-town visitors. People were falling over themselves to... Continue reading
