So, I have a bit of a sheepish confession to make. Even though I've been a voracious reader since early elementary school, I have never had much of an appetite for the "classics," those great works listed on all the lists of "best books ever" (see here, here, and here). Hemingway? Haven't read any of his novels, just a short story or two. Faulkner? Read The Sound and the Fury in college, but nothing else. Dickens? Just Oliver Twist, which I and the rest of my 9th grade English class hated. I did go through a Jane Austen phase in... Continue reading

It's been a while since I've been around here and there's a very good reason why: I'm having trouble maintaining my reading momentum. Admitting this feels shameful, like I've lost the essence of my power as a reader, my reading prowess. I pick up books and start reading them but don't finish; I lose steam part of the way through and then can't bring myself to pick them back up. I feel like there should be a name for this, maybe RD - Reader's Dysfunction? I can already see the treatment commercials now, all featuring more attractive versions of myself... Continue reading

I've been reading a lot lately, or rather re-reading, as most of the books I picked up were not new to me. I've been battling a peristent case of the flu for the last couple of weeks and have found that with my limited energy and interest, what I've gravitated towards is easiness, in the form of books already-read. I haven't been the least bit discriminate - tawdry romance novels, swashbuckling YA, even blockbuster paranormal - the only thing they had in common was that I knew what was going to happen before cracking the cover. And strangely enough, with... Continue reading

So. Here we are. I thought this whole blogging phenomenon had passed me by, but clearly I was wrong. It all started on Friday, when I was having a conversation with a coworker about my favorite subject (books) and how much I love them (reading is like breathing, I said) and how much I miss getting to talk about books and recommend books and generally rhapsodize about books (I was an English major and have a master’s degree in library science). And then he said, “Why don’t you start a blog?” And I didn’t have an answer for him. The... Continue reading

Oh, Alicia, how wonderful! Parenthood is the most amazing gift and no couple could be more deserving. I hope your little one finds her way to you soon.

This is my first time commenting, but I just couldn't pass up the give-away. From one Abby to another, your blog is simply lovely!
I think it is lovely, Alicia, and that you are entirely too hard on yourself. I think the middle one looked really good, too. I can only imagine how excited and special that little girl will feel to know that her aunt did a PAINTING of HER. Wow.

Hasn't the U.S. Open been so exciting this year? I love Melanie Oudin. Clearly, the girl can play and has a ton of belief in herself, but she's still so charmingly and refreshingly 17. At a press conference or something during Wimbledon, I remember her talking about how cool it was that the Williams sisters had emailed her to say good luck. There's just something so nice about a teenager in the spotlight who isn't precocious and jaded.

Beautiful and so soft-looking. One of those would be perfect for our trip to the Outer Banks next month!

That match was utterly amazing. I love to watch tennis but the most tennis I've ever played is hitting a ball against the garage door!

I'm 28 years old and just now really learning how to sew. My Mom has sewed off and on throughout my life, which has actually had the effect of making me resistant to learning how to sew. Sewing suffered from being associated with someone I considered to be tragically uncool for about a decade. In home ec in middle school, we had to hand-stitch a throw pillow in the shape of a letter, which I have always felt was a pretty bad way to teach sewing: what 13-year-old is going to be excited to learn more after they've been forced to spend hours and hours stitching a pillow? My mother, refusing to give up on her quest to get me into sewing, bought me a sewing machine when I graduated from college, and it sat unused and unloved until about 3 months ago. Reading blogs like this one has gotten me really interested in crafting in general and sewing in particular. I've always been really motivated by color and so I've become obsessed with fabric. I've also recently learned how to knit and crochet, so it's sort of part of a larger sea-change in my life, I guess. The realization that I'm a creative person and that I need a creative life.
