The Greats
So, I have a bit of a sheepish confession to make. Even though I've been a voracious reader since early elementary school, I have never had much of an appetite for the "classics," those great works listed on all the lists of "best books ever" (see here, here, and here). Hemingway? Haven't read any of his novels, just a short story or two. Faulkner? Read The Sound and the Fury in college, but nothing else. Dickens? Just Oliver Twist, which I and the rest of my 9th grade English class hated. I did go through a Jane Austen phase in... Continue reading

In a reading funk
It's been a while since I've been around here and there's a very good reason why: I'm having trouble maintaining my reading momentum. Admitting this feels shameful, like I've lost the essence of my power as a reader, my reading prowess. I pick up books and start reading them but don't finish; I lose steam part of the way through and then can't bring myself to pick them back up. I feel like there should be a name for this, maybe RD - Reader's Dysfunction? I can already see the treatment commercials now, all featuring more attractive versions of myself... Continue reading

Oh, Alicia, how wonderful! Parenthood is the most amazing gift and no couple could be more deserving. I hope your little one finds her way to you soon.
The Clearing
I've been very shy about actually saying it out loud, but now that we've officially completed the paperwork, and done the home-study, and met all of the other requirements, I think I can tell you: Andy and I are hoping to adopt a baby girl. To say we are excited doesn't really even begin to de...
This is my first time commenting, but I just couldn't pass up the give-away. From one Abby to another, your blog is simply lovely!
holiday cheer and a (double double) giveaway
So, hello there. Hope you all had a lovely weekend. The past week around our house was a complete and total whirlwind. I work retail both in my day job and when I come home (my little online shop) so it's a great time for me and James is in the middle of finals and star...
I think it is lovely, Alicia, and that you are entirely too hard on yourself. I think the middle one looked really good, too. I can only imagine how excited and special that little girl will feel to know that her aunt did a PAINTING of HER. Wow.
Sort of.
So, you know how when yesterday I said that I did the face and completely ruined the painting and then you said no, Alicia, you're just being hard on yourself and I bet it isn't that bad and how bad could it be, and I was like no, really, it's really really really not good you guys . . . . . wel...
Hasn't the U.S. Open been so exciting this year? I love Melanie Oudin. Clearly, the girl can play and has a ton of belief in herself, but she's still so charmingly and refreshingly 17. At a press conference or something during Wimbledon, I remember her talking about how cool it was that the Williams sisters had emailed her to say good luck. There's just something so nice about a teenager in the spotlight who isn't precocious and jaded.
Early Fall Feast!
The weather cooperated so beautifully with plans for a first fall feast — and that is to say that it was a miserable last weekend of summer, if that's what you were looking for: rainy, blustery, freezing cold, damp, and generally more like what we get in November than the first week of Septemb...

Beautiful and so soft-looking. One of those would be perfect for our trip to the Outer Banks next month!
HANDMADE HOME :: beach blanket to-go
I'll be sharing over the rest of our "HANDMADE HOME Celebration" days together, a few of my favorite projects from the book. I hope when you start sewing from HANDMADE HOME, you'll take a moment to photograph and share what you've made in the HANDMADE HOME Flickr group. I would LOVE to see what...
That match was utterly amazing. I love to watch tennis but the most tennis I've ever played is hitting a ball against the garage door!
Summer Day
On Sunday afternoon, we rode bikes down the woodsy path of the Springwater Corridor from OMSI to Oaks Park, as we often do. Andy wanted to have lunch there, and we had the men's Wimbledon finals TiVoed, and I knew that the later part of the day would include several hours of couchpotatoness a...
Is that a Persephone Classic book on your lovely bed? I love their dove gray covers.
Pillow Patch
WOW. That was quite a response — thank you! I'm overwhelmed (and a little sad that I'm not writing a dissertation called Sewing in Modern Culture, because there's some research for you — ask and ye shall receive!). But, believe it or not, I am still just reading comments, and I am only in the ...
Gor. Geous. And it really does look like a ranunculus. I love the creams and grays.
Sarah and her ranunculus
My friend, Sarah, is an amazing photographer. Many of you know this already. Her use of light is wonderful and when paired with her polaroid, it's magical. I was very excited when she decided to sell some of her prints. I was over the moon when I found that they were all of ranunculus. I ...
Oooh, the fabrics look lovely! I could use a dose of red!
Soulemama Sponsor ~ ALEWIVES FABRICS ~
Today's SouleMama Sponsor is Alewives Fabrics - an online and local (Damariscotta Mills, Maine) shop for fabric, kits and classes! (I wrote about my own finding of the sweet shop way back when). Run by a mother and daughter duo in an antique barn, the shop is full of the most carefully and beaut...
I'm 28 years old and just now really learning how to sew. My Mom has sewed off and on throughout my life, which has actually had the effect of making me resistant to learning how to sew. Sewing suffered from being associated with someone I considered to be tragically uncool for about a decade. In home ec in middle school, we had to hand-stitch a throw pillow in the shape of a letter, which I have always felt was a pretty bad way to teach sewing: what 13-year-old is going to be excited to learn more after they've been forced to spend hours and hours stitching a pillow? My mother, refusing to give up on her quest to get me into sewing, bought me a sewing machine when I graduated from college, and it sat unused and unloved until about 3 months ago. Reading blogs like this one has gotten me really interested in crafting in general and sewing in particular. I've always been really motivated by color and so I've become obsessed with fabric. I've also recently learned how to knit and crochet, so it's sort of part of a larger sea-change in my life, I guess. The realization that I'm a creative person and that I need a creative life.
Laziest Daisy, and a Question
While I was taking pictures of the puppers, I went into the guest room and found my laziest daisy, Violet Paulson, lying on a pillowcase-covered bread board I had brought upstairs last week — a makeshift ironing board I was using to iron in bed while watching TV. (Okay, maybe I am the laziest....
Yay! I just bought one and everything seems to be working fine!
Open for Business
Camera straps are in the shop! This makes me extremely nervous. I hope it all goes well. But if anyone encounters problems, let me know via email - hillroad (at) bellsouth (dot) net.
