In an emergency or disaster the natural "first reach" is for our cell phones. Whether to call for help or let others know we have survived, communication with the outside world, and especially loved ones, becomes critical. While it's important to have the right supplies to keep you and your family secure for three days or more in a disaster situation, it can also important not to advertise your level of preparedness to others. Especially in an urban environment in which you may be among many strangers, most of whom will NOT be prepared with their own supplies (that is just a reality), it is important to keep a low profile. In a less than secure environment, don't "advertise" what you have by what you use to carry it. Continue reading

"Tornadoes don't happen here." That's what the lady at the post office told me as we talked about the tornadoes just reported in another state yesterday. She must not know about the one that wiped out a small town and killed several people just 30 or so miles from here in the past few weeks. She also must not know that tornadoes can happen anywhere in the United States and do happen in many other countries. Continue reading

Dear California: May we humbly suggest that its time to either (1) take a good look at your current earthquake kit (checking for the stuff that has expired since you bought it years ago), or (2) get yourself an earthquake kit? We make this suggestion because Lucile M. Jones, a... Continue reading

50 tornadoes in 24 hours - some massive. The most destructive tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma and already over 50 are confirmed dead. They had 20 to 30 minutes warning but with winds over 200 MPH, it wasn't enough to keep everyone safe. That tornado was over a mile and a half wide and was on the ground for over an hour.
