I am a big "gospel rap" fan. I know that does not sound like something a preacher should say but it is true. As a child of the late 80's and 90's, I grew up listening to Run DMC, LL Cool J, Tupac and Biggie Smalls. However, once I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I stopped listening to those guys. The vulgar language became too much for me to handle. On the other hand, while I enjoyed listening to contemporary gospel and Christian music, I desperately missed the head bobbing beats and memorable hooks of rap music. Several... Continue reading

What is salvation? That is the question we recently asked our Sunday school class. After receiving various responses, we turned to John 17:3 where the bible says "Now this is eternal life that they may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." Did you notice the term "know you"? To know someone means you learn them, their ways, their thoughts, ideas and perspectives. Jesus is teaching that as we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, we enter into a relationship with the Father. Like a marriage, this relationship is cultivated via communication, bilateral... We are blessed! We are blessed with a Father who loves us and has taken action to demonstrate that love. Keenly aware of this truth, the Apostle Paul passionately challenges us to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which we have been called. (Ephesians 4:2-4) We have been called into a saving relationship with the Lord. And this calling was not cheap. God the Father sent His only begotten Son to pay the price for our sins. Jesus did not want to do it; but He understood that it was His mission. In the Garden of Gethsemane,... Continue reading

What are you passionate about? What is that one thing that invigorates you, energizes you and motivates you. What is that one thing that brings joy to your entire being? For the Great Apostle Paul, I believe it was service unto the Lord. As we saw last week, Paul considered himself a prisoner of the Lord. Although he was in a Roman jail for preaching the Gospel, He was not their prisoner. He was a prisoner of the One who sent him to preach the Gospel. "He did not consider his life worth anything to him; his only aim was... Continue reading

When I was a child, there were times when I allowed the temptations of life to usher me into disobedience. Fortunately for me, my loving parents responded with an appropriate punishment. While I disliked getting a whooping, I despised being sent to my room for elongated periods of time. Hours seemed like days, days seemed like weeks and weeks seemed like months as I sat imprisoned in my room staring at the royal blue walls. I am sure that some of you can relate. In the 4th chapter of Ephesians, Paul identifies himself as the prisoner of the Lord. (Ephesians... Continue reading

He must needs go through Samaria. (John 4:4) I have always liked that passage of scripture as it embodies the passion and determination Jesus had for His ultimate mission of SALVATION. Jesus had to go through Samaria because He had a spiritual appointment with a spiritually bankrupt lady. The woman at the well was a mess. She had been married five times and the man she was currently with was not her husband either. While Jesus was well aware of her situation, He did not come to this appointment with condemning stones in His hand. Instead, He came with Living... Continue reading

In the winter of 2011, my wife and I were in search of a church home. We were attending one of the mega churches in our area but it just did not feel right. While the preaching was fantastic, we did not feel connected. Since we were both saved and nurtured in small churches where everybody knew everybody, we were looking for a more personable family style church. So we visited several churches in the area. Unfortunately, we could not find the right one for us. Then my wife suggested that we take a look at some of the smaller... Continue reading

It is my favorite time of year again. The sun is shining. The birds are chirping. The barbecue grills are sizzling. Kids are playing outside. Baseball season is near. And people are sneezing. Well, I can do without the pollen induced sneeze attacks. However, I have learned that there are times in which you have to take the good with the bad. It is spring. The time of year in which those things which have been dormant all winter are revived. It is also that time of year in which we celebrate our risen Savior - Jesus the Christ. It... Continue reading

In the spring of 1996, my mom called me with news that my sister was getting married soon. When I arrived home from Germany for the wedding, I noticed that there was something different about my little sister. She was no longer the smart-mouth party girl looking to have a good time. Instead, she was standing in front of the church leading devotion. I can still see her standing there singing "I'm Running for My Life". For those of you who are not familiar with the song, the chorus says "If anybody ask you what's the matter with me, you... Continue reading

A friend of mine posted the following on Facebook last week My mindset this morning in God is so AWESOME. He allowed me to rejoice in 2 miracles over the past 2 days. First a church member was healed of stage 4 cancer. He asked for prayer earlier in the month of Feb. He had previously survived 2 bouts of cancer and the doctors told him it was back with a vengeance. But God does what He does best. He drove to Raleigh for surgery and when they looked again…they couldn't find one spot of cancer. They told him to... Continue reading

Do you have a "to-do" list? If you are like me, you have a list of items from various areas of your life to include work, church, family and household chores. The list may be stored on your smartphone, written on a piece of paper, stored in your mind or dreadfully embedded in your spouse's mind. (Queue horror movie music please) Of the things on your list, how many times have you promised yourself and/or your spouse that you were going to complete them? How many times have you promised to fix the hardwood floor in the sunroom? How many... Continue reading

Have you ever had a small conversation with your spouse turn into an epic battle? You are having a nice conversation when you unknowingly say something that pierces them. In response, they knowingly say something that pierces you. Then before you know it, you both have dawned your battle gear and started hurling character destroying verbal hand grenades at one another. In coming! Boom! These sounds can be heard in the background as you attack each other's character. You remind your spouse that they are not perfect. Your spouse reminds you of how insensitive and callous you can be. Old... Continue reading

Don't Talk Me To Death. When I was in the Army that is what we would say to someone who was constantly talking about what they were going to do. When we were playing cards, someone would say, "I am going to run a Boston". We would respond, "Don't talk me to death". When playing basketball, someone would say "I am going to light you up". We would respond, "Don't talk me to death". When playing dominoes, someone would say "all money is not good money". We would respond, "Don't talk me to death." Translation, stop talking about what you... Continue reading

It's his fault. No, it's her fault. No Dad, let me tell you what happened. You see what happened was… These are the words of my children as they try to explain some mishap that has happened in our house. It is never their fault. Instead, it is their siblings fault and they have the perfect explanation for what happened. For those of you with children, I am sure that you can relate to this scenario as well as your own personal scenarios. At some point in our lives, we have all unjustly blamed others for mishaps that have happened... Continue reading

When I first got married to my beautiful wife, I was lost. I did not know how to trust her with my heart. I did not know how to handle the inevitable disagreements that arose between us. I did not know how to identify the various pitfalls of life and then successfully navigate us through them. All I knew is that I deeply loved my wife and I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. I do not think that I am alone with this sentiment. There are so many of us who have said I do... Those of us who grew up in the early days of rap may remember the Run DMC song titled "Hard Times". The first verse of the song started with "Hard Times are spreading just like the flu – watch out homeboy don't let it catch you". Many of us can relate to those lyrics. We have experienced hard times in our lives and understand that they can feverishly and recklessly spread throughout every aspect of our lives. So what are we to do when we find ourselves in the midst of hard times and it seems like there is no... Continue reading

Are You Enjoying Life?!?!?! That is the question I recently asked of myself. Was I enjoying life or had life merely become the compilation of a series of tasks on today's to-do list. Like you, I had work, church, social and family obligations that consumed significant portions of my time. And for the most part, I enjoyed doing these things. However, for some reason, I could not answer that question with a resounding YES. There was something missing. Emotionally, I was not trapped in the ruthless jaws of depression. On the other hand, I was not excited about getting up... Continue reading

During our engagement period and the early years of our marriage, my wife and I received a plethora of advice about marriage. The advice ranged from "this is how you treat your spouse to this is how you communicate with your spouse to this is how you survive a marriage – oh I mean this is how you have a long pleasurable marriage". (lol) Some of the advice was beneficial and some of it was horrible. Some of the good advice was from a reputable source but it did not fit our personalities or personal views on marriage. On the... One day, the disciples and a certain Jewish man noticed that more people were flocking to Jesus for baptism than John the Baptist. Curious, they asked John, "Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him." (John 3:26) John replied "a man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven. You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but, 'I have been sent ahead of Him." (John 3:26-28) John understood that the transfer of the spotlight from... Continue reading

God Loves Us! In spite of our past sins and future indiscretions, God Loves Us!!! In spite of our inconsistencies and mistakes, God Loves Us!!! In spite of our blatant disregard for His will for our lives, God Loves Us!!! In spite of our luke warm pursuit of Him, God Loves Us!!! And He has demonstrated that love by taking action!!! John 3:16 says that "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life". God did not merely talk about how much He loves us,... Continue reading

One day, Jesus went to the temple where he found "those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables". (John 2:14) Disappointed in their blatant disregard for the sanctity of the temple, Jesus made a whip out of chords and began striking the merchants. As the whip cut through the air, Jesus said "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a place of business." (John 2:16) The money changers began to flee. Curious, some Jews questioned Jesus' authority to take such action. Jesus responded "destroy this temple and in three... Continue reading
