And the president asked Elie Wiesel - Nobel Peace Prize winner, Holocaust survivor - should he remove Saddam.
Wiesel said yes, and then he added, "If only the world had listened to Winston Churchill in 1938 or 1939, World War II and the Holocaust could have been avoided. And I thought to myself, if the world had listened to Churchill in '38, people probably would've said "you exaggerated the threat of Hitler. You know, who says there was a World War coming?" We'll never know what we averted by getting rid of Saddam and how many lives were saved as a result of removing the threat of Saddam Hussein.-ari fleisher on morning joe
when the means prove fantastically bad, push up the fantasy for your ends. so simple
Mothers of the Disappeared
by Eric Martin A reminder to those that advocate for war with Iran of what war entails: In a pastel-colored room at the Baghdad morgue known simply as the Missing, where faces of the thousands of unidentified dead of this war are projected onto four screens, Hamid Jassem came on a Sunday search...
thank you hilzoy, and to your commenters thank you also, i've learned here.
Last Post
by hilzoy I had all kinds of ideas for things I wanted to write before I left, but between last-minute packing and phone calls from friends and family, it didn't happen. So I'll just say a few things quickly. As I said before, one of the things that led me to start blogging in the first place w...
hilzoy,
i took jes to mean sandford's faux-concern for his own kids, not your concern as what is sickening
Obligatory Sanford Post
by hilzoy Well, someone has to write one. I watched his news conference, and I thought he looked at or near the end of his rope. I admire him for taking responsibility for what he did, though I don't at all admire what he did, either the 'betraying your wife and four kids' part or the 'leaving ...
ABC reported last night that the rifle was "nearly 100 years old" but nothing about how it came into his possession
Shooting
by hilzoy The victim: "Colleagues called Stephen T. Johns "Big John," for he was well over 6 feet tall. But mostly friends recalled the security guard's constant courtesy and friendliness. "A soft-spoken, gentle giant," said Milton Talley, a former employee of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum,...
Bullwinkle: You just leave it to my pal Rock. He's the brains of the outfit.
General: And what does that make you?
Bullwinkle: What else? The executive.
"And now, here's something we hope you'll really like."
and now as good a time as any, thank you to the posters at this site i have learned much over the years.
Surely out of Context
Quote that I certainly hope is out of context: But in the gushing department, Schumer was no match for Reid, who gave a lunchtime news conference of his own where he announced that Sotomayor "is going to be a fantastic, superb Supreme Court justice." Is there anything in her record that could c...
1st question: why is the President watching sen. Reid blurble and sputter and not yet come to his aid, after all didn't he start this boulder down the hill, shouldn't he be helping here?
2nd question: isn't it going to be difficult to keep the terrorists/detainees safe from our maximum security prisoners, more so than us from them?
Coward
by hilzoy Oh, and Harry Reid? Try showing some courage. Try leadership. You never know; it just might suit you. This certainly doesn't: "QUESTION: If the United States -- if the United States thinks that these people should be held, why shouldn’t they be held in the United States? Why shouldn’t ...
why is my blockquote tag disappearing? hmmm ... above 1st para, is a marc quote
Emissions Standards
by hilzoy This is wonderful: "The Obama administration today plans to propose tough standards for tailpipe emissions from new automobiles, establishing the first nationwide regulation for greenhouse gases. It will also raise fuel efficiency targets to 35.5 miles per gallon for new passenger vehi...
The SUV argument is absurd in any case - demand for them plunged in the era of 4 dollar a gallon gasoline, and folks are wary of gas guzzlers when they know that high prices could return at any time.
one would think so, and yet just last fall prior to all the bankruptcy talk, we saw a surge in truck and SUV sales (as soon as prices fell) and still today, despite the many market difficulties in the whole market, SUVs and trucks are not the "untouchables" they were at the height of gas prices.

"Sexual abuse is "virtually a fact of life" for female prisoners in the United States, many of whom are sold by prison guards as sex slaves to male inmates, according to a new report from Amnesty International."
how is this possible? do inmates have the cash needed to buy a guard's dignity and potential freedom? aren't prisons separated by gender? this seems unlikely to me.
Know Your Onion
by Eric Martin While the policies of torture authorized by the Bush administration are garnering the lion's share of the attention - and outrage - at the moment, there are layers of dirty little secrets to the issue of torture and detention in America that need to be peeled back if sunlight is t...
an undeserved and generous reading of cheney's remarks places him in the no torture crowd as well. his tortured definition varies from mine. however, i am curious, what would you allow? and are you willing to sacrifice every other issue so important to you and be punished by the electorate for what is seen by voters as line drawing and definitions for the benefit of the the super others.
would you sleep deprive a man in order to stop another bush election?
Does Rape Work?
by Eric Martin Greg Sargent passes along one of the latest developments in the ongoing controversy surrounding Bush administration-authorized use of torture: There’s a big piece of news about Dick Cheney and torture buried toward the end of this big Washington Post piece about the torture wars....
nicely done video btw, fun and slick, i agree will EL, the point will be missed by some, heck, i just met a masters of ed student that believes colbert is merely a self-effacing committed conservative, so convinced was she, that i spent a few seconds considering the power confirmation bias has on me and then swatted that fly dead.
Dueling Videos
by hilzoy The Senate Republicans have put up an unusually boneheaded video about the idea of holding Guantanamo detainees in the US: Something about 9/11 seems to have produced a kind of amnesia among some people on the right. It's as though they think that we have never before had to figur...
every couple of months my local news tv station covers an angry and frightened reaction to a recent move in of a listed sex offender. the town folk are interviewed and they are deeply concerned for safety of all. this story has been on wash, rinse and repeat for a few years now. i waiting for the question "well, where should they live?" this never gets asked, it never gets asked because this story is about gut reactions, and angry neighbors, not what to do, what to do.
