Just like that, my days of sweeping up Cheerios have begun. This snuck up on me. We've been doing purees for a while, but Jo would gag on any bit that wasn't completely smooth so it felt like it would... Continue reading

On Saturday I took part in the Women's March here in Washington DC. I've since seen posts on Facebook questioning the point of it and asserting that women here don't need a march because the writer feels she has all... Continue reading

Yes, Internet, I have a six month-old. Nobody ever tells you how quickly they grow up. I'm kidding, of course. Everyone tells you how quickly they grow up. You just don't believe it right at first. "The days are long,... Continue reading

This year I am thankful for (as ever, in no particular order, well except for the first one): A healthy baby girl. Honestly, I feel like I could quit right there this year and it would be more than enough.... Continue reading

Dear Secretary Clinton, On Tuesday, I put on a white shirt and sweater in solidarity with the suffragettes who wore white while fighting for my right to vote, as well as because it hides the spit up that generally decorates... Continue reading

These days, Josephine usually wakes up around 8 or 8:30. Or I wake her up at 8:30. It still feels really wrong to wake a sleeping baby, but it's good to have some semblance of a schedule so I do... Continue reading

Soon after Josephine was born, a friend who was about to be due with her first baby asked me how motherhood was. I responded something along the lines of how it's like falling in love with the coolest person you... Continue reading

From the early days, when Josephine was just a tiny dot on an ultrasound, the song I associated with her was Can't Take My Eyes Off You. It was possible at the time that she really was too good to... Continue reading
Yes, I'm over a month late on this year's annual video. I meant to get most of it done ahead of time, assuming Josephine would arrive before our anniversary (July 17) (yes she did) and I'd just add in the... Continue reading

I've seen a lot of lists of what to pack for the hospital and many of them were very, very long. I didn't pack nearly as much stuff as most of them suggested and still I overpacked. So I thought... Continue reading
Thanks, Julie! I hate too thinking that I let my girl be hungry because I was trying to feed her a certain way. The idea of a whole night of sleep is just to beautiful to even imagine right now. One way or another, I know I'll get there!

Thank you, Laura! You'd think knowing that my siblings and I were all formula fed would make me feel better about it, but there doesn't seem to be much logic or reason to my feelings on the topic. It's hard to believe right now that potty training will ever come, but I do realize we'll get there! Then I will be happy to hear anything you have to say on the topic.

Thanks, Libbie! I'm so glad you and Avery (and Matt) have found a balance that works for you. It's too bad they didn't have a lactation consultant for you sooner. Good for you for leaving the group when it was causing you more anxiety. I really appreciate the comment and the solidarity!

Thank you, Carmen! You and your girl have such a neat bond from everything I've seen.

During all of this I have often thought about you and how entirely I did not understand what you were going through when I responded to your post on Facebook about having to give up breastfeeding. I am so glad that it has turned out to be very clearly the best decision for you. Leo is such a gorgeous hunk of a baby. Also, I love "write off the boobs as a purely recreational area" so much! And you, of course!

Holy shit, you guys. This stuff is fraught. I never understood when women would talk about feeling guilty for feeding their babies formula if breastfeeding didn't work out. They were doing what was best for their babies. The babies were... Continue reading

Here's me on Friday, July 8: We went out for pizza, which I paid for with heartburn that kept me up most of the night. This turned out to be very unfortunate timing. On Saturday morning, I was seeing floating... Continue reading

Josephine Lakshmi, born July 10 at 4:42 a.m. weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces and 20.5 inches long. And practically perfect in every way. I'll be back with the story of how she came racing into the world and with plenty... Continue reading
Oh, hey Internet! Happy Independence Day! And also, we bought a house! A townhouse, to be exact. (The townhouse that I referred to in the days of our house hunting as "the counter space house". Miles of countertop, you guys.... Continue reading

I'm 36 weeks pregnant today! Here's a look at our nursery preparations: Why yes, that is a garage. Our friends' garage, to be exact, as we still have no house. We do have an infant seat which isn't installed in... Continue reading

Not in Okinawa. We had a going away there at Blue Seal, a local ice cream place, where we and about twelve friends took on the Big Mountain, which is somewhere around 30 scoops of ice cream, plus Corn Flakes,... Continue reading
