Obama's Inauguration, The Gift and The Speech
Given that Senator Obama rose to fame on the wings of a great speech--an historic speech delivered at the 2004 Democratic National Convention--the irony of President Obama's inauguration was how small a role his address seemed to play. What took center stage that icy January 20 in Washington, D...
Thanks for the comment, Shirley.
Keep in mind that Barack Obama has instructed all of us to stand up and speak out when we agree or disagree with his decisions. He has said that he wants to hear from us, has set up unprecedented mechanisms to do so, and has assured us that he will listen. In addition, Obama has gone out of his way to set up a cabinet of advisers who challenge him by disagreeing--similar to the deliberative strategy of Abraham Lincoln. So, to not speak out on Rick Warren would be to violate the very principles of deliberative democracy President-Elect Obama has championed and urged us to embrace.
The struggle we face, I believe, is that after 8 years of George W. Bush, so many of us have been led to see all criticism of a President's decisions as de facto betrayal of support for him. It will take time for us to re-embrace deliberative discussion as the normal practice of engaged citizens.
So pushing back against Obama's embrace of Rick Warren is not just about civil rights advocacy, but about reclaiming our democratic responsibility as citizens.
On Civil Rights, Obama Must Lead Not Tinker
News that Obama invited Rick Warren to say a prayer at the inauguration is a troubling sign for a President elected to be a new kind of leader. The decision suggests that on civil rights issues, Barack Obama might be more of a tinkerer than a leader. So far, Obama has shown himself to be a bo...
"Outlandish," "irrational," "hatred" and--I stole Christmas. Normally takes me a few posts to hit all those. Must've had a good breakfast Tuesday...
The Painfully Unwatchable White House Christmas Video
Given this week's events, I did not think it was possible to find a video more excruciating to watch or more embarrassing to the United States than the footage of an Iraqi journalist shot putting his shoes at George W. Bush. Oh...wait...I found one: The 2008 Barney Christmas Video from the Wh...
Thanks, Scott! I'll check out the WCF video. And will be posting more on this topic in the days ahead. Next up, most likely, a discussion of the Rouge plant and the potential it holds for reframing Ford in the current political environment.
An Open Letter To Ford Motor Company
TO: William Clay Ford, Jr., Executive Chairman, Ford Motor Company RE: Leading A Real Discussion About America's Future Dear Mr. Ford: I write to you as a citizen concerned about America's future, at a time when so much seems to depend on the fate of the U.S. auto industry. To clear up any...
