There's no shortage of sexism related to mermaids. In a lot of folk lore, mermaids are blamed for bad storms and doomed voyages. Or they're said to lure men out to sea to be drowned. In advertising, they're mostly ornamental. At least in these ads, the mermaids support the messaging. The last ad in the series is my least favorite. The mermaid on the table is asking you to eat her. (Get it? Get it? Get it?) It's such a weak idea, I'm having a difficult time working up some feminist rage. CBS recently premiered a new crime drama called Stalker. As you may have guessed, it's about stalkers, their victims and the cops who try to catch the criminals. I watched the first episode. It was kind of lame. But first episodes often are, so I may try the show again after a few weeks. What I'm less inclined to forgive is the TV show's radio commercials. They refer to Stalker as "America's newest obsession." Puns at the expense of crime victims make me uneasy. ********** Here's a particularly offensive vintage ad that I dislike for the same reason.
