They are not ugly. They are cosmetically challenged. Yes, we are so PC here in California even with our produce. I've been noticing this more at farmer's markets here in the Bay Area, boxes of cosmetically challenged vegetables and fruits. This produce is perfectly edible, it's just not necessarily showroom... After eating the beet red quinoa at Source, I was inspired to make some at home coupled with a chicken and chard stir-fry. I like the yin yang symbolism in the plate. Instead of white and black, I have red and green going on representing a plant flow of energy.... Continue reading

Phoenix bestie @ElizabethHannan was in town visiting. After taking a loop around the Ferry Building to enjoy delectable Blue Bottle lattes, we walked over to The Plant Cafe at Pier 3, an organic cafe, to enjoy happy hour with a couple of appetizers and glasses of wine. I LOVE this... Continue reading

To add some fiery excitement to my daily green salads, I've started adding chopped jalapeno. I call them my little rings of fire on greens. In this salad is a bed of organic arugula, with chopped avocado, peaches, red onion, shaved zucchini and slices of jalapeno. I got most of... Continue reading

Thanks! Mashed bananas are actually considered an egg replacement for vegan baking! I just used extra banana to make the bread softer.

This dish is real simple to cook, and makes for a fun dinner. You can pair it with some Quinoa and kale salad. All the ingredients come from Trader Joes. Use as much of the sausage you like. In the photo, I used half of the keilbasa which can feed... Continue reading

Well, my first time bread experiment turned out pretty looking if I do say so. I had yet to make a gluten-free bread, so last week when I was stocking up at Costco, I got a bag of Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free All-Purpose Baking Flour and decided to experiment.... Continue reading

Recently at Whole Foods, I discovered Mi Rancho Organic Corn Taco Slider Tortillas. They are 4" in diameter and are the cutest things. I've been on a taco slider creative binge lately. For brunch, imagine all the creative fun taco sliders you could make. The kids will LOVE these sliders!... Continue reading

Imagine the rich smell of fresh basil and now add in a spritz of soothing lemony fragrance and you have lemon basil. Oh yes, it is divine. Lemon basil is a popular herb used in Arabic, Indonesian, Lao, Persian and Thai cuisine. You can find it at farmers markets, Asian... Continue reading

I had brunch with the family recently, and dad got one of the specials which was this linguine pasta dish with lobster, mussels, clams, and shrimp. The dish was big enough food to feed three adults. I had to take a photo of dad's dish just because I was so... Continue reading

Looks yum huh?! Before I get to esplaining what Flexitarian is, let me share that the blueberry, granola parfait and the Grilled Garlic Jalapeno Havarti with Roasted Tomato and Basil sandwich is dairy and egg free. The yogurt in the parfait is coconut milk Greek-style yogurt. The dinner plate is... Continue reading

Bacon is a great way to get people to try new things, and in a salad you can use bacon sparingly for flavor versus as a main dish on a plate. When I eat bacon, I always get nitrate-free bacon. Black Forest bacon would be a good one for this... Continue reading

I love how Whole Foods has the flower section in the front as you walk in the store. I was pleasantly surprised the other day when I walked into the Whole Foods on 4th in SF and saw organic basil mixed in with the other flowers. The smell was pretty... Continue reading

As you know, we are done with baby carrots because it reminds me too much of dieting. Besides, whoever gets cartwheel excited over baby carrots? Now, roasted purple carrots, here is something that will make your palate dance. Ok, maybe not Gangnam Style, but you'll definitely Instagram this. Heirloom carrots... Continue reading

I got all "We are the World" on your basic Chinese Chicken salad. You know I simply cannot do anything generic. I got inspiration for my fusion salad from this Chinese Mexican restaurant in Phoenix where I used to live called Chino Bandido where you can get a Carnitas, Egg... Continue reading

LOL! Yeah, I just made up the word Vegveeta as a funny name for my vegan cheese recipe.

Quinoa salads are a basic food for me because Quinoa is a great plant-based protein source, and it's gluten-free. Beets are kind of a polarizing food. At first bite, the experience is usually either, "Oh yum!" or "Oh yuck!" And beet juice makes everything look like a bloody mess, which... Continue reading

I get really excited when I start to see fresh corn on the cob appearing in grocery stores. It means summer is almost here! There are two foods I will only eat organic or if I absolutely know it is GMO-free and that is soy and corn, two of the... Continue reading

If you want a good place to ease into vegetarian and vegan food, Source in San Francisco is an excellent restaurant to visit. It's located down the street from Zynga headquarters. With all the plant-based foods at Source, it should be the digital restaurant in Farmville. It was my first... Continue reading

This is how I throw down Mexican appies. That's right, it's plant nachos with soyrizo completely vegan and gluten-free inspired by Thug Kitchen's post about Roasted Strawberry Salad. Oh yes, that gooey melted cheese you see on the nachos is vegan. I call it Vegveeta because it kinda looks like... Continue reading

Doesn't cauliflower all of a sudden look more exciting in these cool colors? I especially dig the purple cauliflower because we all know how I love purple food. I saw these fun creatures at the farmers market in Moraga yesterday. Jazz up your platter with some colorful cauliflower! The lime... Continue reading

I like saying the word "rhubarb." It's fun and rolls off the tongue amusingly like "kumquat." In fact, I would name a pet rhubarb, maybe a cat or a bird. Rhubarb looks like celery's bigger, pinker, party-friendly sibling. I'd much rather invite rhubarb to my neighborhood fundraising for the Fireman's... Continue reading
