This will be a slightly different announcement than you're perhaps used to with this blog. (That's American Thanksgiving for our Canadian friends.) Yes! We're having a baby girl! I'm due November 29th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. So far all is well, though definitely strange. April was... tough. May was slightly better. And now I have a bit of a bump and am feeling good! For Mother's Day, we made a SUPERDEEDUPER quick trip through Chicago. One of these days we'll have to get up there for a more extended visit, but this time work got in the way and it was not to be. We celebrated Mother's Day at the Parthenon in Greektown, which has been the site of lots of family gatherings since before I was born. Oh my glarb, you guys, we've been so sick here! The Mother of All Colds set up residence in Logan's lungs, and then jumped to mine after a week. Lo, the house has echoed these many days with the racking coughs of an unhappy couple. Basically, it's been disgusting here for, like, three weeks, and we are SO ready to be DONE. A couple of weekends ago, we were really feeling something comforting. And the dish we find most comforting on the weekends is Hot Breads' pesarattu upma. Family and friends said goodbye to our cousin Liz today in Tallahassee, Florida. Liz was the wife of Logan's cousin, Dusty. She was born and raised in Chicagoland (like me), moved to the South for college (like me), met a charismatic Southern man (like me), and decided to remain in the South (like me). Thanks, Kristi! (I don't know what happened with the google plus login, but I will assume it's Typepad's fault, the goobers.) NINE YEARS. It's kind of hard to believe! Of course, the first year and the last year were both pretty quiet, so maybe I can only really lay claim to 7 years. :-) I'd highly recommend La Petite Grocery! But, as you know, there are so! many! wonderful places to eat in New Orleans! It's always hard to choose.
When we were in Louisiana in December, it was actually COLD. This was refreshing, as some holiday seasons it's downright balmy there, which makes it difficult to sit in front of the fireplace enjoying a nice hot cup of cocoa. (PITY US.) A couple of nights before Christmas, we all bundled up in our warm clothes and hopped in the car to check out Celebration in the Oaks. I've been feeling a lot of tugging lately. This blog is still evolving, in my mind if not on the electronic page, and I'm just not sure which way I'll go with it! We haven't been eating out much lately, due partly to the holiday money crunch and partly to the Logan working time crunch. When we do go out, there's a bit of a push and pull between going back to places we know and love (Bufalina, Barlata, Maudie's, Ramen Tatsu-ya) and trying somewhere new. Who wants to spend hard-earned dollars and hard-won free time eating a meal that isn't all that fun or delicious? We ended up at Salty Sow last week. Man, I WISH. I'm sure there are festivals dedicated to this most pillowy and delectable of Italian potato dumplings, but I haven't yet been to one. Luckily, I have a husband who occasionally indulges his love of the gnocchi (singular gnoccho), and last week was one of those times. We had gnocchi TWICE, guys. TWO TIMES. DUE VOLTE. DOS VECES, seriously. This is freshly made, with a tomatoey cream sauce. aHOOOga, amirite? Logan's refined his gnocchi recipe over the years. We had a pretty ridiculous weekend. Things got off to a bang with a sushi blowout, continued with an art crawl, and ended up with a trip to the races! The Formula One races in Austin, that is! Our October was both. Well, mostly weddings, which I did mention in this last post. We went to two, both in the DC area, both with particular costumes. My cousin's bunny slippers are the best. Well, perhaps they have some competition from my grandmother's Mardi Gras mask? First wedding: DC, Capitol views. (Also the best picture Logan's gotten of me in a while. Thanks, bear!) Sigh. Yeah, the blog has been just about defunct lately. It just hasn't felt like home to me, anymore, and I can't help but feel that the person I am now is very different than the person who started Boots in the Oven back in 2005. I'm not sure what direction to go in, but I know I want to keep blogging. Perhaps a shift to a lighter (and less weighted down with history) wordpress site? Huh. And here we liked Bogota (besides the tear-gassing on May 1). The market was amazing, the squares were gorgeous, and the people we ran into were really nice. Instead of jumping on us, you could maybe suggest other places you think visitors to your city would enjoy more? Just a thought.

Hey, are you following me on Instagram? Because I post there as bootsintheoven, shock. And here's proof, from an impromptu trip to Houston the weekend before last! Houston has one of our favorite museums, the Menil Collection, which does not allow photography inside. Sigh. But they have pretty tree-lined walkways. And really nice guys working a PB&J truck. Did you know that half a PB&J, on wheat bread, with apple slices, spicy peanut butter, and strawberry jelly makes a delicous, nutritious snack that will keep you going for hours? Lenoir, you little jewel-box of a restaurant... you precious salon. Thank you to you and your chef, Todd Duplechan, and your on-point waitstaff (Hi, Melinda) for making my birthday so wonderful. Lenoir is pretty terrific, guys. They have a prix-fixe menu, where you can choose three courses for $38. Considering that most of the items are local and everything is so carefully considered and prepared, this is a screaming, honking deal. Life goes on! Obladee, obladaa, et cetera. Logan's working, I'm working (well, actually, strike that - I'm temporarily unemployed as of this morning, hooray end-of-project!), the cats are freeloading, and we've mostly been good little homebodies. What else is up? Well, we clearly have not been feeding and watering this here blog. It took us a bit of time after we got back from the trip to start hitting Austin's terrific array of farmers' markets (farmer's markets?).
