Hell, encourage them in math if you *don't* want them to be engineers.

It's Stewart Brand, not Tim O'Reilly. Apparently I'm not just as aware of the citation as you but more so. And why the red herring about free-as-in-beer education?

"Information wants to be free" doesn't mean "free" as in free lunch but "free" as in free speech, you know. Libre, not gratis.

@Dame Eleanor: Alas, if only I'd known! I asked on FB, but of course, you're smart enough to stay away. @Alison: Just down the road. I'm in a sabbatical house now, moving to a Victorian mansion a few miles away.

As you've probably seen me moan on FB, I have dealt with this issue for two family members, and a third is headed my way. I've sold stuff to Replacements Ltd, and sold stuff via Craigslist. Sometimes it's worth the trouble, and sometimes it's not. There are always moments when I wish I could build a pyre in the front yard and give the departed a roaring Viking send-off.
Oh, I have made a film, and on that basis, I warned them that they were biting off too much (and particularly too long a film). Hence my lack of sympathy. Plus there was a good bit of flakiness at work (the only guy who knew FinalCut Pro deciding at the last minute to go drop acid in the desert over the weekend, that kind of thing).

@JEP: I'm a hybrid subject, what can I say? @Calwatch: We debated taking the 50, but we've been slightly worried about time, given that we're racing a moving truck.

In this particular case, it is the claim that feminist epistemology created distributed authorship. Um, no. Not hardly.

Quite problematic, indeed. But I have no one- or two-word alternative at hand. If you do, give it to me this minute. Stand and deliver!

Oh, I'm not hating on the use of the vernacular in writing. I'm just amused by the way that even that gets regularized.

I have that reaction too, Sheriff. (What is the proper protocol to use when addressing a sheriff, anyway? Your Mightiness?) And I see a lot of it, especially in the comments on friends' FB pages (which is where I experience a lot of class-mixing in writing). I suspect a lot of it has to do with phonics, which was curse upon the land. If you teach a kid that this letter always has that sound, of course you gonna in up with spelings like "tryna" an "hospitle." You sentence the kid to a life of confusion between spelling and pronunciation.

Heh. Ted is a half-generation than us, Jim. Plus, I didn't like Good Squad much myself. But I think Special K liked it (must confirm). Maybe age isn't the deciding factor in that case?

*I* know you'll be better in Part II -- you'll be VINDICATED! I look forward to the gratifying conclusion.
I like both these theories ("What a pet should be" and "TV dogs vs. Internet cats"). Flavia, what bugs you about Gopnik's style, in the dog essay or generally? It doesn't especially annoy me (even if he thinks he's much cleverer than he is), but a friend loathes him passionately.

David: Thanks for the info! Digwuren is, I hope, scurrying around the net to claim credit for this rather clever line (whether or not you are Digwuren). After all, credibility is built on reputation... amgine: Agreed. And I'll add that I imagine that some of the commenters will be quite surprised to hear that they sound under 30 to your ears. I'm afraid xoom skews rather old, much like its author. Piranha: Several people have asked me in the past day about whether I am shutting down my Google account entirely. I've thought about it, but I'm not ready to yet. Like Dr. Virago and Catsandbadgers, I have taken steps to limit exposure, and I may change my mind later. The most important thing I can do is to alert my friends who are unaware of usage issues (net neutrality, open access, privacy concerns, security theater, etc) to the ways they are affected. And that holds true for most of us.

Chris, I thought I had made it clear that "if you're not paying, you're the product" isn't exactly news. But if I didn't adequately make the point that our attention is being sold, let me reiterate: It has ever been such. At least since about five minutes after Canter and Siegel. What's new is the way that identity specifically is being re-envisioned. By Schultz I assume you mean Howard, rather than Charles. What did he have to say on the subject?
