Part One is here. Part Two is here. Part Three is here. This all comes to eight pages or so of single-spaced type, so you will need a while to read it. I used the military format for expository writing: tell 'em what you're going to tell 'em, then tell... Continue reading

Yep, I had one. A total fail. I recently got some of these 310-grain boolits, with the intention of making some serious "bear loads" for the Colt Anaconda and also some heavy rifle rounds for the Marlin 1894C. After I got the boolits in, I began to look at published... Continue reading

The "AK-47" question in the dee-bate the other night was a peek into Obama's mind. It was obviously a planted question, and Obama gave a canned answer to wake up his anti-gun base. Since the same answer would have mande the Blue Dog Democrats unhappy, he was taking a chance,... Continue reading

Very advanced. You might have to be a serious benchrest shooter to answer this. Problem: I have acquired a rifle in the caliber of .300 Savage. Highly advanced for it's 1921 day of introduction, the 300 Savage had the approximate power of the .30-06 Springfield, but was built into a... Continue reading

Does anyone know whether this Russian American Armory shotgun uses the same magazinges as a Saiga-12? You can get 10 & 12-round magazines for the Saiga-12, as well as this drum-type 20-rounder, but the RAAC MK-19B comes only with a 5-rounder. I'm impressed with the book stats on this gun,... I shot my annual LEOSA-04 pistol qualifications yesterday. It was a bit different than usual, because instead of being in a group of 5-15 shooters as I have been before, I was the ONLY shooter, so the entire range was populated by the RO and myself, in that order. Some... Continue reading

Finally got the Pitbull to the range. I went to the Clackamas Co (OR) Sheriff's Training Center, the facility at which I do my annual LEOSA04 quals. After the usual check-in, and re-do of all my range-user paperwork (because I dummied and didn't bring my old copies), I was issued... Continue reading

Okay, now that I have the Pitbull, what do I shoot in it? What do I shoot for practice and what do I carry for the best defense loads? Here's my first trip around the reloading bench: For max defense, I'm using the Hornady "Hornady Action Pistol" (HAP) bullet, a... Continue reading

It came in, some three weeks or so after I ordered it. The "instant" background check, which used to take less than five minutes, consumed over an hour. This after the Oregon State Police, who manages it, managed for it to break down on a weekend, ruining the gun show... Continue reading

What is so special about a semi-auto-only H&K, wannabe assault rifle but not C3, that it should cost $4495? No other provenance listed. I'm clueless. Continue reading

Yeah, yeah, which came first, the chicken or the egg? I know, and no, this isn't about sophistry, it's about a database I just ran across while trying to find a more inclusive burn rate chart for reloading powders. I found that chart, and a lot more, at The Reload... Continue reading

Excellent travelogue, Erin, and see, you aren't missing your parents a bit! WQe have our own adventure stories, call us on Skype for those. Enjoy your week with Matt, and tell him I need to talk business with him when he gets back to StumpTown.

Cross-posted at Rivrdog blog, here. Via Tom Tancredo, former congressman from CO, "Sheriff Mack", who's about to announce for Congress out of TX, was putting on a "Constitutional Sheriff's Convention" in Vegas, apparently last weekend or about now. Donations had been solicited to defray the expenses, and apparently, the Sheriff... Continue reading

Meh. When the SA wizards with private access to all the servers can't even recover your lost posts (I've had about 3 go down the "memory hole" in the last year or so), and then you are advised to blog from an off-site text editor and then post to your Typepad blog (as the answer), I'm sorry, but I can't develop much enthusiasm for the new "tool"

*************************************************************************************************************************** UPDATE: 011211 1303 PST: Thanks to Joe and Uncle, my fears are somewhat relieved on this old, moldy poll. Joe explained it in comments, on the Rivrdog post. I guess that means that the only real worry, if you want to spare some, is that USA Today has a... Continue reading

I belong to KTOG, a Yahoo! Group (discussion board) for owners of Kel-Tec firearms. I own three models of Kel-Tecs, a P-11 (9mm compact), a P3AT (.380 sub-compact) and a pair of Sub-Rifle 2000s (pistol-caliber carbines). The Kel-Tecs I own are highly functional firearms, and I depend on the two... Continue reading

Sounds like a good trip. The boat races seem to be a knock off of PYC's Tuesday night "Candebeer" race...start working up that backpacking weight. When you get to 30kg, let me know...that's what I started with when backpack-fishing the High Lakes in the Cascades, back in the mid-1960's, usually hiking 10-12km with a 500-700m climb in it somewhere. Today's packs look a lot easier on the body, though. I used a crude Freighter Frame pack back then, most of the weight was a WW2-surplus 4-man raft to fish from, without it, I barely humped 15kg.

Just about everyone I know uses Hoppes' Bore Snakes, so I noted with interest that they improved them, by both adding a second embedded cleaning brush and changing the oil-application tail of the "snake". That's an improvement, which, according to Hoppes, means you can use half the pulls-through to clean... Continue reading

...and why all the mystery about 1870 ballistics? Here is a whole company founded on hype, the hype that ancient Japanese Samurai were the first "special forces" snipers. Other than my agreement that any military art in ancient Japan was taken very seriously and developed to a high level of... Continue reading

OK, your "stinkboat" papa gets your drift, but I thought I'd told you that I grew up in sail. Aside from rowing clinker-built dories around the Serpentine in Hyde Park when I lived in London, my first days in sail were spent as crew on one of your Grandpa's war buddy's boats, a Danish Viking Sloop (32 feet) on the Chesapeake Bay. We sailed in the summer, we sailed in the winter, and when the boat froze in her moorings in Annapolis, we went down and chopped her out. We challenged everyone we could hail to impromptu races, and Heaven help the crew if we lost! I've been Master of a 41-foot Sabre motorsailer up in the San Juans, and logged more speed out of her semi-fractional rig than any charterer ever did (9.5 knots). So, when you buy that sailing yacht, I'll be here to teach her fine points of sail to you! Here's your homework assignment: find out what a Tacking Duel is, why they are done in racing (3 reasons), and how close you must be on the points of sail to make that tactic work. Ready About? HARD a-lee!

Had any mutton curry yet? Should be standard fare in most any pub. All the locals should be happy to recommend what they feel is the best curry. Is the beer "cooled"? Or, is there still warm beer out in the countryside?
