good post. Danish Børnehave or kindergartens are also all about play, and some of them are about playing in the woods! There were a few in greater Copenhagen that were "school of the woods" where the children dressed up in oversuits and boots and just played out in the woods all day long :)...

We're off for two weeks of camping and cycling through Oregon tomorrow! It will be a real test of us and our little car with tent, cots, bags, clothes, bicycles, cooking gear, dog, boy, Susan and me, all stuffed in... Continue reading

thanks Trish! We're well-aware that our nine year-old will not keep up his end of the bargain periodically, but our goal is to have him and the dog on a regular cadence within a year or two ;). Let's compare notes!

"Every dog deserves a boy" said Mr. Peabody, and he was right. Malcolm has been after us for a dog for a couple of years, and we felt he was ready for it, and so here he is. 'Bangsi' (which... Continue reading

After stepping on Malcolm's lego bits and bobs for the thousandth-or-so time, I decided to create a Lego-themed desk and bookcase for him... this is what I ended up with you can see that it's a bit of a mess... Continue reading

We had a terrific time at MakerFaire 2011 in San Francisco last weekend -- I'm just now getting around to posting pictures and videos (all of which you can find here). We've been talking about going to MakerFaire for a... Continue reading

We had the pleasure of visiting Mt. Teide on Tenerife back in 2005, it was quite beautiful. Terje Sorgjerd took a beautiful time-lapse of the Mikly Way from the summit of Teide whicn you can see here on Vimeo: The... Continue reading

Good post! I'd add that HD Homerun (http://goo.gl/CQf7) is a great HTPC addition for Clear QAM cable: My kid gets to watch all the Mythbusters he wants, I get to watch PBS shows + CBC etc. It sends all video traffic across e'net in our house so any computer can use the tuners via drivers. Also, access to BBC iPlayer (via a UK tunnel, for now) adds some terrific content to the mix.

Susan's birthday today, so Malcolm prepared a cake from the Gadgetology cookbook for kids with Ben and Jerry's 'Fish Food' and vanilla ice cream plus fresh fruit. Happy birthday to mum! Continue reading

there's a bit of a standing desk meme going 'round right now. While in Copenhagen I had a nice desk that could be raised/lowered to allow working while standing, which I really liked. So with my engineer-dad's help I adapted a Geek Desk elevating base to a nice IKEA Galant... Continue reading

a bit of bicycle geekery for boxing day. My Atlantis has very high & wide wheel clearance so that you can use big, fat tires, or knobby tires with or without fenders, so I've always been jealous of riders about... Continue reading

here's an interesting story I heard today -- from a former co-worker I haven't spoken to in around 10 years.... context: Before going to Microsoft in 1999, Susan and I worked at 'Next Generation Network' or NGN. NGN was about "digital billboards" in public places like 7/11 stores. We (a... Continue reading

Hey Auntie! I'm sure you're not ready to kick the bucket, but according to the "letter of the law" I am indeed middle-aged: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_age Note that this fact has no connotations for me and changes my behavior or attitude not one whit :).
I’m still trying to get my head around the Google-Verizon Net Neutrality proposal, and what it actually means, but in the meantime, here’s a few links on the topic from some people who know more about the topic than I ever will: Dan Gillmor: Ominous references to the "public Internet"... Eric - upgraded to Web 4 and the FTP-ish approach works, thanks. The UX is a bit weird though: Selecting 'Open Site' shows no FTP option (that uses FPSE only although it doesn't tell you that); you have to use 'Site/ Import' to see the FTP options.
