Long overdue updates
I realize most of the I Cycle Hamilton action has been happening on facebook, and by extension, twitter for far too long. Why an actual blog update now? Well, at a fundraising event for Open Streets Hamilton, a recently incorporated non-profit organization promoting active transportation, safe streets and livable cities... Continue reading

Milkman 2.0? Reintroducing home delivery of healthy food
I'm not sure when the milkman stopped going to people's doorstep to place a bottle or two of milk into the milkbox, but it probably disappeared along with other home deliveries--from the hardware or grocery store, the local bakery, even the corner store. It seems the milkman stopped making his... Continue reading

Choose your mode and don't slow me down: an HSR story
I have never had use for the bike racks on our HSR buses, but every time I see a full bike rack on a bus I smile (this used to go for both of us--my partner and myself). I love the idea of multimodal transit! The best transit systems in... Continue reading

A time of change and growth
At a little more than a year in operation, we are experiencing growing pains, and June has been a month of changes both challenging and exciting! We did two moves--personal and business. With new business in the pipeline and an impending house move (the house we were in was being... Continue reading

Lots of cycling-related things/events in and around Hamilton coming up!
First, for those of you who have not yet seen it or heard about it, Hamilton's first bike corral is up. A bike corral is an on-street (curbside) bike parking space. While Hamilton has put the first pilot partway on the sidewalk, with the actual bike rack being on the... Continue reading

Winter Cycling and Infrastructure
Arterial streets are okay now, though bike lanes, where they exist, and curbs, generally, are messy. Residential streets are very messy with packed snow with tire tracks and some slush. If you're on a bike today, take it nice and easy on residential streets, and on arterial streets exercise your... Continue reading

CAN-BIKE Training Coming to Hamilton this Spring
I know I have been rather critical of Hamilton's response to liveable city initiatives, including pedestrianization and cycle-friendly infrastructure, but there are things being done. It just seems implementation of infrastructure is so anemic and fragmented. One piece of good news of late is that, beginning this spring, after too... Continue reading

MACGreen's Polar Bear Bike Ride: Countering the 'It's too cold to ride' Myth
MACGreen is holding a Polar Bear Ride this Friday, February 3rd, 2012 to counter the myth that it's too cold to ride through winter. So, modeled on the Polar Bear Dip, cyclists will be going for a short ride from the Mary E. Keyes Residence dressed minimally--shorts, t-shirt, bathing suit,... Continue reading

City of Hamilton a follower, not a leader, when it comes to cycling initiatives
I received an e-mail yesterday from a cycling contact at the City with the request to pass the information on to my readers. However, instead of simply posting the information, I want to share my frustrations with the position the City keeps taking on the subject of cycling. Here's the... Continue reading

I'm in Recreation and Leisure Studies at Mohawk College and I Cycle Hamilton
Name: Edward O'Hara {no pic yet} Where do you ride and how often? I commute from Pearl North to Mohawk College daily. I ride everywhere and anywhere. In the summer I ride at least 10 to 15 thousand kilometres of road. When I worked in Toronto I was known to... Continue reading

Getting in shape without the gym: cycling and the street workout
After starting my sustainable urban delivery business, using cargo bikes and trailers to deliver up to 300 lbs of goods for and between local businesses, I got into pretty decent shape. Just from all the cycling alone, leaving my diet intact and not doing any other workout, I lost about 20 lbs and my legs became solid and well-defined. I began at about 184 lbs and am now 162.5 lbs, as of this morning. My midsection, however, remained soft and flabby. All that cycling did nothing, or very little, for my core. So I began looking for things I could... Continue reading

Jacob, thanks for stopping by and for your comments. There are indeed many alternatives, especially for urbanites, to relying solely on a car.
Though I didn't get around to posting about it--my efforts have been directed mainly to building my cargo-bike delivery business and when I can, www.icyclehamilton.ca--we did finally manage to sell the car on August 25th, 2011 and have been car-free since. Grocery shopping is now done with my company cargo-bike.
Getting ready to go car-free!
For the past few years, indeed the whole time I've owned this little fuel-efficient 2005 Toyota Echo, I worked too far from where I lived to make cycle commuting practical. Though there were times -- see earlier posts -- when I got a ride from Hamilton up the escarpment to Waterdown and rod...
Holiday Hours
I will be taking a little time off over the holidays, but not much. I will be off after 2pm this Saturday, December 24th and return September 27th through the 31st. I will also be off January 1st and 2nd for New Years. Happy holidays, everyone! Remember, I will deliver... Continue reading

Oh my! Looks like I forgot to put sugar in the recipe above. I hope no one's tried to make them and wondered why they turned out badly because of it. I will update it while I correct as I've made some improvements to the recipe since. Sorry!
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies
I have a major sweet tooth. It's the only thing that at times causes me to be slightly less than 100% vegan. When out at a coffee shop -- most still have no vegan baked sweet options -- I sometimes get a regular sweet despite getting soy with my coffee or tea. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but ...
Found Nishiki bike: anyone lost one?
Because my partner and I go for lots of walks, and we happen to enjoy a little train watching too, we spied a bike (I won't reveal the location at this time) lying at the bottom of a bridge near the tracks. It looks to have been a decent bike,... Continue reading
