Natalie, that's terrific! The contest is a neat idea. Students get so excited about the opportunity for prizes and recognition. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next time!
Back-to-campus Celebrations
Academic libraries are becoming increasingly creative in their back-to-campus welcome events, often held during orientation or the first days of classes. University of Kentucky has its Hubbub, Georgia Tech has its CeLIBration, and I recently learned of Cardinal Stritch's Librarypalooza. I know...
Mary Ellen and Anne, thanks for your comments.
I believe that broadening our association name will help all of us, no matter our title or type of organization. As I mentioned above, colleagues at my own library don't necessarily understand the relevance of "Special Libraries." I would not expect the university Presidents, Provosts, or Deans to really understand it, either, even though so many campuses have "special libraries." My only criticism of the Alignment Project was that we did not involve university leadership, as a significant number of our members (around 20-25%) work in academic institutions. As we move forward, we still have the opportunity to learn from academic leaders. Regardless of type of institution, we can all use strategies to better define our value.
Stacey Greenwell - Candidate for Division Cabinet Chair-Elect - Question #2
For me, a key takeaway from the findings of the alignment project is that the terms "special library," "special librarian," and even "SLA" do not resonate outside of our profession. I would argue that the terms are not all that clear within our profession, either. I cannot tell you how many ac...
What an exciting time to be part of this association! You can add to the discussion on Twitter by using the hashtag #slaname or by posting your comments and ideas to this wiki: http://wiki.sla.org/display/align/SLA+Name+Change
Why SLA Must Consider a Name Change
2 July marks the anniversary of SLA's founding. Our founder, John Cotton Dana, wrote that the name Special Libraries Association, “was chosen with some hesitation, and rather in default of a better.” When SLA undertook the Alignment Project more than two years ago, a name change was not in ou...
Virginia, nice blog! Your coverage of the conference was excellent. Wish I could have attended more of those events. This was the first year I missed the Tech Support Roundtable; I'm glad it's still going!
More SLA Conference Coverage
I couldn't agree with Stacy more that this was indeed "another great conference". Among the highlights were the Opening Session & Awards Ceremony where two of our colleagues were honored, and the Kentucky Chapter dinner at Bobby Van's Grill. In case you haven't already heard, Stacey Greenwell is...
What a terrific idea! I'm really excited to see this unveiled at the business meeting next week.
A bit of Division history
30 years ago this year, in 1979, the Division changed its name from its original name, the Documentation Division, to its current name, the Information Technology Division. That's just one tidbit you will be able to learn if you catch the new IT Division timeline created for the 100th anniversar...
Tom, thanks for that update! I had been checking every few days but hadn't in the last week. We are really growing!
Growing Stong!
Greetings fellow Academic Division members. Did you know that our membership is nearing the 200 mark? I just checked the online membership directory and it is showing that we have already grown to 191 members! This is tremendous -- especially since we were not officially a division until real...
