Naomi C - you are dead wrong.
Receiving in-state tuition IS government assistance. Paying in-state assistance means the government is subsidizing 76% of the true cost of attending most UC colleges.
Not only that, but every illegal immigrant who attends college means there is one citizen/legal resident who is not. It is called opportunity cost. That means we have thousands of people who played by the rules, who obeyed the laws and who are then punished for it.
Most Commented: Helping fund illegal immigrants through college
Should state law offer in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants? The overwhelming opinion among many of our readers posting on our discussion board: No! This position, of course, differs with Monday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision not to hear a challenge to this law, as well as the board’s ...
Dear 11th Grade High School Student:
You have NOT been educated, you have been indoctrinated. For the vast majority of immigrants to this nation, the immigration was done LEGALLY. If you have been taught that most immigrants came here illegally, then you need to sue your teachers for malpractice.
My family immigrated in 1907. They came though Ellis Island. Ever hear of it? It is where LEGAL immigrants came to be screened. And many were turned away. The rules for being allowed in the country changed about every two years with each new incoming House. Hear of the Port of New Orleans? The Port of San Francisco? Here is a list: http://www.genesearch.com/ports.html
These are all places where LEGAL immigrants came and ASKED to be let in, and were given the chance to prove their worthiness. They did not bum-rush the school and demand that the United States ignore laws and process.
You do yourself a disservice by repeating (I presume) the lie that most immigrants came here illegally. I suggest you learn some real history.

These children were not kidnapped and brought here. They are not victims, though that is clearly the objective of the "brought here by their parents when they were infants" diatribe. These children are the reason their parents broke the law and came here.
It is just the coup de grace of the continuing theft from taxpayers.

LA Reader, you missed my point entirely... in fact, you proved my thesis.
Mailbag: Who's calling the media 'lamestream' now? (Hint: It isn't just Sarah Palin)
Sarah Palin: A shameless political celebrity, or a substantive voice in national politics? If you came down on either side, you might share with the former Alaska governor's critics or supporters a common enemy, judging by recent responses sent to letters@latimes.com: the mainstream media. The...
I am not a Palin supporter, but "articles" like this are exactly why she is so populare. She did not make herself into a political celebrity - the Media at large did.
With every dirty trick, slanted and passive-aggressine comment (grossly evident in the text above) coupled with a gross lack of questions or investigation into the Democratic candidate, people saw the real tactics and objectives of the Media at large.
It was easy for people to project themselves into Palin's position. They could identify with her position. And whatever you may think of her intelligence or political positions (the Media spends a lot of time assaulting both, and at the same time refuses to ask the same questions or put the same effort into the President), Palin is shrewd enough to capitalize on it.
The Media didn't investigate or ask questions of the American Left, but spent too much time trying to marginalize a pronounced 42% of the country. No wonder Fox has a huge audience and traditional media is shrinking; they demonstrated again and again they cannot do their job. While it helps partisans, even the public at large realize what the Media has done and has no faith in them for news standards.
The Media alienated huge contingents of the public and created Palin, not Palin.

To the Al-Jazeera commentator: Hamas has never mistakenly bombed a school while trying to bomb a military base. Hamas are cowards who purposely try to only bomb civilian targets. Your organization (and you yourself) paraded the initial report as absolute proof and empirical evidence; now you do not have the integrity to admit you based your rationale on lies and instead turn to more hate. Reports and facts mean nothing to you; you are consumed only by bitterness and loathing. You are irrelevant except for the missiles you launch and bombs you set.
As for the Goldstone report itself, the world can see the UN's biases and willful errors. There is no excuse. Israel did not start this last war; they defended themselves against cowards who hide behind women and children, who fire missiles from schoolyards and starve their own people and blame Israel and a global Jewish conspiracy. Hamas is an organization who cheered and celebrated the recent knife murders of a family, including a 3 month old child stabbed 21 times. This is what Israel was, and is, defending itself against.
Monsters like Hamas should not be allowed to exist.
The conversation: Can Goldstone's flip-flop change the way the world views Israel?
It was the op-ed article read around the world. On Friday -- and on April Fool's Day, of all days -- Richard Goldstone wrote a piece for the Washington Post denouncing the central claims made in his 2009 Goldstone Report, which concluded Israel had committed war crimes that resulted in the dea...
Oh, Patrick. You have everything all wrong again. You are a horrible spinmeister but a great passive-aggressive.
It seems the only time you can assess things is when you take 1,000 words to assess your own errant assessment.
As for the conservative themes, as with all else, you are partly right. Your continued propaganda about the personnel in Hollywood is either hopelessly naive or deliberately misleading. Based on your past writing, I bet on the latter.
The one bit of hypocrisy you have forgotten to point out is that the business and structure of Hollywood is THE most conservative/Republican economic system in this nation. But you lie when you say the majority of practitioners are not ideologues or there is no persecution/penalties for "outed" conservatives, particularly in the lower ranks.
You know better. You just don't have the courage or ethics to write it.
'The King's Speech': The triumph of Hollywood conservative values
As one essayist wrote not long ago, it's become an article of faith in Conservative America that Hollywood is a “collection of hopeless la-la-land liberals — or worse, an elitist gaggle of heartland-bashing snobs.” Conservatives have routinely ridiculed Oscar movies for attacking the military ...
Huge, huge massive, stupid and avoidable mistake for everyone except the person getting some cash out of it.
Having a brazenly partisan person be an editor for a network (broadcast or web or anything) is a massive mistake as it will result in the alienation of a significant part of a potential (or current) audience.
Arianna Huffington will be editor in chief of all AOL Web content; TechCrunch didn't get the early memo
AOL's purchase of the Huffington Post was a surprise to many, including one of AOL's top properties -- TechCrunch. Tim Armstrong, AOL's chief executive, sent a memo at midnight (Eastern time) to all AOL employees announcing the deal, except TechCrunch. "They don't trust us with anything," wrot...
A corrected stammer aside, the real question, plainly asked, was "why is the Earth the only planet with one 1 moon?"
And if you people pull you head out of your butts and look a the facts, the Earth indeed IS the only planet in our solar system with only one moon.
I know most of the people at large are not the types to let a few facts get in the way of their hatred, but at least try to not make it so easy to prove you wrong and small-minded.
Goldstein is a liar. He cannot report on anything any better than he can hold up his promises to keep sources' confidentiality - he lied to me and then promptly gave my name to a person he was "investigating." Goldstein is a liar in every aspect of his professional being.
Bill O'Reilly on science: Why is Earth the only planet with a moon?
As my blogmate Jim Rainey has frequently pointed out, Fox News has its own unique view of the world, where the facts rarely get in the way, most recently in the way Fox pollster Frank Luntz used a strange brand of faux science to find a panel of people unimpressed by President Obama's recent Sta...
Matthew wrote: ""Conservatives," appear to want to take Los Angeles back to the 30's and 40's when Latinos couldn't even report a crime without fear of deportation."
Matthew, you have it all wrong.... if someone is here illegally then they SHOULD have the fear of deportation. Simply showing a driver's license or passport is not an undue burden, and actually is both state (in CA and AZ) and Federal law.
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck says he doesn't expect an Arizona-style immigration law in L.A.

On May 6th, 2009, I was rear-ended at Farifax & Beverly by an illegal immigrant. The man had no bumper on the front of his truck, and the bumper struts drove into the rear of my car and into the trunk. The man had no ID and no insurance and claimed the car was not his but borrowed from someone he didn't know but used for work.
It took two hours for LAPD to show up to even take a traffic report. When they did, the training officer (he was there with two fresh-from-the-academy patrol officers) took MY information onto an index card and then told me to leave the scene. It took me 9 months to get a copy of the report but the report said that the man who hit me, despite his complete lack of identification and illegal operation of the car, was sent home and not arrested or even cited.
It caused $7,500 of damage to my car that was covered by Uninsured Motorists coverage, but my premiums went way up. It took $4,000 of resale value out of my car. And the man who created the accident by operating as a criminal got to walk away from it. I could not. I paid, and still am paying, for his illegal acts.
And LAPD's policy let him get away with it.
LAPD failed me then. They have failed the citizens of the United States and residents of Los Angeles for much longer.

This was a moron who pointed something at cops, two-fisted, and acted as if he had a gun. This is NOT some paranoiac police state - this was an idiot threatening people. Cops are NOT paid to be shot, or even shot at. This was an idiot threatening and acting as if he had a gun. Sorry, but he was stupid and made a fatal mistake. The cops were justified; they are not supposed to wait and see if they get shot to find out if the guy has a gun or not. Note to all the morons out there: don't pretend to draw a gun on cops. Don't threaten cops, don't posture. And when told to drop what is in your hands, do it. You have a right to be stupid, you do not have a right to create even a potential hazard.

Family of slain Long Beach man outraged over police shooting, plans to file suit [Updated]
The family of a 35-year-old Long Beach man shot and killed by police while holding a hose nozzle plans to file a lawsuit against the Long Beach Police Department, the slain man's father said Tuesday. Doug Zerby, 35, was killed Sunday while sitting on a stoop playing with what police said appea...
Mary, this is sheer hypocracy. You spend more time dancing around what you really want to say - that you hate O'Reilly and the Right - instead of actually giving a critical recount or analysis of what happened.
The fact is, O'Reilly is better at the bluster than Behar and Goldberg, and that is why they left. They have lectured and proclaimed - a tactic you say is solely O'Reilly's - but with infinitely less logic or explanation than the man.
Basically, the girls got beat at their own game and finally had someone on the show who wouldn't cave to their half-thoughts or celebrity.
Punch, meet Judy: Bill O'Reilly visits 'The View' [video]
If you wanted to know what's wrong with American politics, all you had to do was watch “The View” on Thursday, when co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar walked off the set after Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly announced that “Muslims killed us on 9/11.” In the wake of their ...
This is one of the STUPIDEST things I have ever heard: "There's no reason for anyone to die over marijuana."
I am sorry for a mother's grief, but what do you expect? The entire industry is, and has been for more than 50 years, run by criminals. It is grown by criminals, it is trafficked by criminals, the money is laundered and transported by criminals. They just now get to call themselves a "collective" and have a storefront. It is moronic, every bit as stupid as the losers who toke up.
The lie of calling it "medical marijuana" doesn't make it medicine, or a legitimate process. When street hawkers wander up and down the Venice boardwalk shouting "prescription pot" there is no medicinal process involved... it's simply a bunch of stoners buying drugs from criminals. You never see then shouting "aspirin" or "knee braces" or "prilosec" and have a doctors standing by to write a "recommendation" in exchange for $200 (cash only, of course).
IF pot was dispense by legitimate doctors by legitimate pharmacies, there would have been someone with medical training and supplies that may have saved this kid's life. But there is NOTHING legitimate about "medical marijuana" or "dispensaries" at all. It is simply a storefront for criminals to sell their wares. 99% of all people with a "prescription" for a card simply lied to one doctor in exchange for cash, and there is absolutely no physiological reason at all to have pot.
Until then, people will die because of it, and for it. California legalizing pot will only give organized crime an enforcement-free zone to anchor themselves in the spread their brutality to other states.
'No reason for anyone to die over marijuana,' mother of slain pot dispensary worker says
A medical marijuana dispensary employee killed Thursday during a robbery at the Echo Park store is the son of a well-known L.A. labor leader, Julie Butcher. Matt Butcher's mother described the killing as "totally senseless," saying her son was simply trying to cobble together part-time jobs in...
We have finally seen Obama's leadership for what it is. This is the first event that is truly his. He can't blame someone else or issue an apology. He has failed and fails a little more every day. There is no leadership, there is only critique. He cannot provide, he can only whine about what is in front of him and dream about something else.
For those in LA who need an entertainment reference to understand... Obama is an Ebert, not a Spielberg.
