Ah, good question! Each of these books is great in their own way and all very different – I'd say pick up whichever one sounds like something you're in the mood for. The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley has the most adventure and is a fantastic father/daughter story, The Leavers is a mother/son story about identity set in New York and China, Standard Deviation is a portrait of a marriage and the funniest of all the books (although, obviously, you have to like its variety of humor), Dear Ijeawele is a short and well-crafted book about feminism, and The Thing Around Your Neck is a lovely collection of short stories that depicts the lives of Nigerians.

Four books I've recently read and enjoyed: 1. The Leavers by Lisa Ko – "Short and blocky, she wore loose jeans—never had he seen her in a dress—and her voice was so loud that when she called his name dogs... Continue reading

I don't think I've ever had banana ice cream but it sounds delicious. And I already have a bunch of frozen bananas in the freezer (which I usually just use for making smoothies) so I might even have everything I need! Thanks for the suggestion, Kathryn :)

I hear you -– that's why I resisted for so long. It's funny, though -- I actually ate a smaller portion of the ice cream that I made because I saw firsthand how much sugar and cream went into it. (I still really enjoyed eating it, though.)

oh, wow – that sounds delicious (and tiring)! The machine I bought is the Cuisinart ICE-21. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it's very easy and quick to use. Once I poured the ingredients in, it took less than 15 minutes for the ice cream to come together. It needed freezing afterward to harden up, but still, I was surprised at how quickly the mixing process was.

I recently bought an ice cream maker, just for fun. (Well, what other reason is there to buy an ice cream maker?) For its inaugural churn, I made vanilla ice cream with chopped up treats mixed in (one part Skor... Continue reading

A few days ago I finished reading The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley by Hannah Tinti and I can't get over how great it is. It's a coming-of-age, father-daughter epic; it's a page-turner and also beautifully written; lovely Whidbey Island... Continue reading
