I like Rowan Felted Tweed and Lavold Silky Wool. They're not exactly scrumptiously soft, but they do hold their shape well and are durable over time. I agree with Robin re: the Cashcotton 4 ply. I've only swatched with it, but the hand feel was nice and the fabric is so pretty, both in stockinette and lace.
Seeking the perfect Yarn Mate
Kristenlynnea convinced me that knitting success derives from knowing your yarn. So, what is the perfect yarn for me? I feel like I should post a personal ad or something. “Seeking high-quality yarn. Wanted for trips to the beach and stylish outings. I’m not just a girl looking for fun. I wan...
I wear lots of handmade (both knitted and sewn) to work. However, I work in a fairly casual environment (higher education). I used to work in a law firm and I was more selective about the knitwear then. In my opinion, most handknitted garments just aren't that formal. In general, I'd say garments made with lighter gauge yarn (like dk, sport, fingering), standard/subdued colors, well-fitting, are more work-appropriate. As for quality, I'd say no obvious errors, it must look as good as ready to wear but be better constructed. For finishing, I like to use 3 needle bind off on shoulder seams. When possible, like for hems and collars, I sew down live stitches to minimize bulk. I also consider whether a pattern will be work-appropriate before I cast on.
Sweater #1 is quite sexy for work. It's beautiful though, and perfect for a date or party!
#2, 6, 9, and 10 are a bit on the casual side. I agree with the comment above, the lace sweaters would be fine with a cami underneath in coordinating color to minimize contrast. #10 seems big on you and obscures your figure. (which you should show to advantage!)
#3 and 4 seem more obviously handmade to me because of the variegated yarn. You just don't see that much in ready-to-wear. The variegation also makes the garments look casual, in my opinion.
#5, 7, and 8 are perfect for work or whatever! All 3 of those fit perfectly, cover sufficient amounts of skin, and the quality seems comparable to any high-end store.
Time for a Knitting Makeover?
TIM GUNN'S GUIDE TO STYLE -- Pictured: Tim Gunn -- Bravo Photo: Mitch Haaseth Is it Time for a Knitting Makeover? Recently, I’ve been watching episodes from Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style, looking for tips to make my knitting more fashionable. I didn’t start out knitting with any thought of fa...
Beautiful! Your gorgeous FO is inspiring me to finish my wisteria, which is currently stuck on sleeve island. Thanks for sharing!
Spring in Mid-Winter
If only I could do a cartwheel instead of just stand with a silly grin on my face (and squinting eyes because the sun came out for 5 minutes). A cartwheel would have been the perfect celebration for Wisteria. She is spring time in the middle of winter's blahs. Because the first sleeve had t...
Thanks L! When I first tried it on, the neckline seemed a little bare but I think it's ok for work as long as I'm wearing nice pants or a skirt.
