I heard of a few people liking the MobiPocket Creator Publisher edition: http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/ProductDetailsCreator.asp Since the Kindle would be your primary market (that's a guess) this will allow you to create .mobi files that is readable on the Kindle/Sony Reader/Phones. I talked to a number of people that says it works well and can keep most of the formatting in place on the Kindle. Just an FYI.

You can go with this tested and rated drive but it's expensive: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/drives/7948/ But honestly, that LaCli drive is just a standard hard drive in a rugged enclosure. I doubt it has isolators on the hard drive itself protecting it in a shock environment. Therefore, you'd probably be just as well off (and cheaper) just getting an all-aluminum enclosure and buying a 2.5in hard drive. If you are still concerned about damaging heads and mechanisms in the hard drive, I would look into the new solid state drives (expensive!) or some type of flash drive but it all depends on your storage capacity needs.
