I third or fourth or whatever the National Building Museum. I was at Air & Space for the first time in 15 years just a couple of summers ago and found it actually largely unchanged since I was a kid-- it looked and felt to me exactly like it did in 1995, which was exactly how it had felt in 1988. But he might still like it, and if you can get out to the new annex by Dulles, I hear it's terrific (although I have never been).
And The Living's Easy'ish
Yesterday Caroline and Edward had their first day of summer preschool. As anticipated Edward wrapped himself around my lungs and moaned, "Noooooo I don't yike summah precooool." If he had spent the early morning picking me wildflowers and tracing hearts onto my palm with his fat fingers I might ...
Actually, my favourite part was the throwaway about the 24 hour embargo: "... we felt we should offer you all an explanation as to why it is important to the international media that the transcripts are not posted, or at least delayed until a day later."
I mean, as if those two things are even remotely equivalent. What a bunch of assholes. I have zero respect left for a group that runs scared and employs blatantly protectionist tactics to keep itself going. Other sports have their press transcripts released. The White House releases press transcripts. Either tennis writers are completely fucking delusional as to the relative importance of the information they're clinging to, or they know how abysmally they're doing their jobs and are trying to to claw on to every advantage they have. I'm going with a little from column A and a little from column B.
Oh, You're Finished? Well Then Allow Me To Retort.
So a quick summary: RG.com isn't posting full interview transcripts. Word got out that the International Tennis Writers' Association had requested they not post the full interview transcripts. Fans found out. Fans complained. So ITWA wrote a very very long letter. You can read that letter ...
Suck it up, tennis MSM, and check ASAP Sports. If other sports journalists can survive their presser transcripts being released, so can you. Lame ass whiners.
Anyway, at least for a lot (although by no means all) of the WTA pressers (including the one posted above), you don't need friends in high/low places, and you don't need Google. You need only to be willing to visit this thread on TennisForums:
http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=435892
I would assume there's something similar on Men's Tennis Forums, but I haven't checked.
I Got Friends In Low Places...
As those of you on the Twitter know, Roland Garros is not posting full transcripts of press conferences. There are many rumored reasons for this and I'm going to keep my mouth shut because apparently it gets me trouble. But RG.com's decision to not post transcripts is definitely a sucky one. ...
I've been! I've been *with you*.
Tip: Go to Taberna La Daniela. Ask for dessert wines. They won't bring you any, but your night is going to turn out WAY AWESOME anyway.
"You have to believe we are magic..."
Welcome to Madrid. Where the people are pretty and the collars are popped. I've never been to Spain. To be honest, I had no desire to ever go to Spain. I don't speak the language, I don't know that much about the country, and Spanish, as a language, has always been associated with Mexico. B...
Me too, what the hell? I'm blaming PMS.
Back to Good.
News broke today that Dinara was pulling out of RG and taking an indefinite leave from the tour in order to let her back heal properly. Thanks to Christina, here's the full translation: Dinara Safina: “I don’t know when I’ll come back.” Former #1 ranked tennis player Dinara Safina spoke to S...
Said we’d be forever
Said it’d never die
How could you love me and leave me
And never say good-bye?
[crying into my drink]
Pic This: He's Just Not That Into You.
We should have known this day was going to come. Please enjoy this photo montage from last year in San Diego: God love her. She tried so hard. (Pics: Forty Deuce)
I gotta do a full translation of the whole article. It sounded like they discussed her hiring a hitting partner when he had to leave after IW, she hired a new coach instead & brought him back to Moscow, Vera's idea was that they could all work together but Sergey felt like she was trying to demote him back to hitting partner, and he left.
(Apparently the idiom means that fighting for control is pointless.)
Anyway. I am sad. So much pretty, gone... gone. [silent weeping]
Breakin' Up.
Crazy haps, you guys. Crazy haps. First off, SportExpress is reporting that Vera and Sergey broke up. MOMMY AND DADDY DON'T LOVE EACH OTHER ANYMORE! She'll be coached by Karen Krotov, the guy that we have come to know as "Not-Sergey". And believe me, he is "Not-Sergey" in every way shape ...
Obviously a gift from Liezel.
Axis and Allies.
Axis Alliance 2, Allies 0. Waiting on you, Fran. Feel free to jump on in there too, Kimiko.
Once you get past the initial shock/choking laughter, you realize that the funniest thing is that these two are FAR from the worst dancers in the WTA. [cough]Bepa[/cough]
Actually, Aga's pretty good. Maybe she really missed her calling in the fine arts.
Why You So Good To Me, Internet?
Two words: Radwanskas. Dancehall. No really, those are the only two words I understood on that page. But they were only two words I needed. UPDATED: Whoops! Link fixed!
People say Tokyo's not a tourist city, but I loved it when I was there, too. And I didn't even find it that expensive-- it's not Peoria, but I didn't think it was any worse than, say, New York, or any major city in Western Europe.
So seriously, people. Go.
Thanks, Japan.
I'm finally back in the Bay Area after a five week jaunt from Indian Wells, Miami, and then to Tokyo to visit my sister for a week. It was another long stretch of 2011 wherein I lived out of my suitcase, relying on the generosity of others. Thanks others! You were so generous! Anyway, this ...
"But I don't recall taking an oath and taking the stand"
So, if you're not in court, rampant lying is A-OK. Let's hear it for ethics!
Please. Don't Let the Facts Get In The Way of Your Journalisming.
So Petko's blowing up. We all know this. Yesterday she got the Pete Bodo treatment. Now, I know what a lot of you are thinking, but surprisingly, no, he did not describe her as being "strong like a Munich beer wench." I know. I was shocked, too. It was actually a very nice, positive take ...
We are extremely amused by this response. We are practically crying from laughter.

Guh... that's adorable.
Pic This: Melt Your Heart.
I have no idea who that kid is but he did a fantastic job convincing me that he dropped from Dani's womb. Get the adoption papers, Dani. He's totally yours. (Pics: Forty Deuce)
Her poor little hitting partner. Is that who he is? Awwwwwk-ward.
Let the Countdown Begin.
Between Andrei telling JJ that she had no heart on a coaching timeout aired publicly all over the world and the intense one-hour debriefing that we witnessed on the practice field after her loss, you kinda gotta wonder how long this coaching relationship will last. I'm not entirel...
Like a boss.
Pic This: Sergey, Sergey, Sergey. Literally.
WERK. (Pics: Forty Deuce)
She's said she's going to be at Indian Wells, yes.
High Five!
Dinara won in Kuala Lumpur. Like, a match. In straight sets. Winning 12 straight games. She even threw in a bagel. Granted it was over someone ranked #125, but considering Dinara's current ranking stands at #117, that's totally the same as like... Caro beating Kim 0 and 2. That's what we ...
Excuse me, but she is currently ranked 1*13*. Pffffft.

"Dangertown"... I shouldn't laugh, but I did.
Pic This: I'm Distracted By The Shoes.
Fer and Pico took to the beaches of Dangertown, Mexico to play a little beach tennis. Be safe, boys.
It seems to me that a lot of people conflate really, really not liking Caro's game style with "she doesn't/can't do anything".
Take it from someone who really, really doesn't like Caro's game style, people. Those two things are not the same. Just because you don't enjoy watching it, doesn't mean it's invalid.
Oh, and I really wish she'd stop being so spot on with the press. It makes me feel like I should put more effort into appreciating her.
Defending the Crown.
When I was in high school I made my fair share of varsity teams. I can tell you that I never made those teams on the strength of my offense. I couldn't hit, I was too short to play front row in volleyball, and I was never a natural striker. But I could defend the shit out any sport I played...
You spent half an hour of your life thinking about Lleyton Hewitt?
I am... sad for you.
Pic This: Okaaaaaaaaaaay...
I don't even know how a picture like this gets taken at a tennis match. I've sat here for 30 minutes running every scenario in my head and I'm really at a loss. WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? (Pic: AP)
Maybe it's because she's so kee-razy that you just know whatever she's doing, there's some meaningful EMOTION behind it.
Also, I love how K-Swiss didn't give her anything new for AO, but this is now her second new kit in two weeks. Pattaya City and Dubai = K-Swiss slams.
Seriously. Does No One Use A Dictionary Anymore?
Look. I get it. In these technologically advanced times life moves really fast, if you don't stop, blah blah blah, Bueller. But that is no excuse to not Google words whenever you're not sure you're using them correctly. I mean, isn't that the whole point of the "life moving so fast" thing? W...
It's an annual disgust-fest. The WTA continuing to have a tournament there is just the ultimate whore-fest and shows a complete lack of respect for their athletes.
I Don't Think "Comfy" Means What You Think It Means, Fuckwad.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? "When most players at the Dubai Championships finish their matches, they mingle in the clubhouse eating and chatting. For Shahar Peer, it's back to a guarded compound where she watches movies with her father Dov. But it could be worse for Peer." I'm sorry, but this pi...
I think that's right (for some reason, Typepad's not letting me reply). My feed was freezing every half a second, but I think it was ad Vera to get back on serve in the second, Dani hit a ball that was called out (which would have given Vera the break) but the umpire overruled. They replayed the point (which Dani won, getting back to deuce), and after that the umpire gave Vera the language warning, then 'fessed up that she hadn't actually heard anything, just read Vera's lips. I think maybe the commentators were going on about the point that got overruled (people who were there have said it looked pretty far out).
Since Vera had already had a warning for smashing her racket, it was a point penalty, so ad Dani (match point), then GSM Dani.
"You Can't See This Ball But Now You Can Speak Russian?"
The news out of Pattaya was Dani beating Vera on the way to her first title since Linz 2007. I mean, really, who thought Dani had it in her to go through a top 5 player to win a title? But the hilarity came from Vera's slow-burn indignation in the semifinal after the umpire followed up a di...
All I can think when I see the "get some" crop is Kevin G in Mean Girls: "Get some, get some!"
Hmmm, he was Asian, also. I'm such a stereotypical white person.
Pic This: I'm With You, Shirt.
GET IT, NAILS. And thanks for reminding me that I have 80 Fresh Air podcasts I still need to get through. Asians women are pretty good at nagging. (Pic: Getty)
Good to see Gisela owning it. I mean, it's hard not to look dorky with braces, anyway.
Slammed? Slamful? What's the Technical Term?
I never knew you could "smile out loud". Then I saw this picture. And I totally did. It's like when you're smiling so broadly and so suddenly that you actually make a noise. Yeah, I'm trademarking that, bitches. There is no longer a Slamless #1 on the WTA doubles circuit, as Flavia and G...
