I'm still not used to that pyramid. One day, perhaps.... but your photos are gorgeous! xoxo
The Pyramid in Paris
The Pyramid reflected in a pool of water at the Louvre, Paris. Designed in 1984 by architect I. M. Pei, the structure is made of glass segments, steel rods and cables. The Pyramid stands 20.6 meters (about 70 feet) high; its square base has sides of 35 meters (115 ft). The Pyramid was inaugurat...
That's one excellent wine!
The guest blogs
Di Mackey, visiting from Antwerp, writes: "I'm not sure what to do guiltwise when staying with a hostess so gracious that the only job I am tasked with is drinking a glass of rather delicious red wine while she slaves over a hot stove, creating a lovely pasta dish that will accompany the light ...
Chanel....timeless elegance. All they can do really is "dress" it up. I love the camellias. xxoo
Camellias and charm at Chanel
The main entrance to Chanel on rue Cambon, Paris. Camellias and charm at Chanel. The ensemble on the left is reminiscent of the Gibson Girl look, with a modern twist. Pearl braid upgrades a uniform. Gold-dotted White shoes to wear after Easter (or before, if you're at a tropical r...
P.S. Santelli is making a spectacle of himself. He has gone off the deep end and, as happens to these crazies, gets to tour the airwaves talking about his craziness. NBC is treading a dangerous path....
And in today's news...
The brilliant guy in the White House: "We will rebuild, we will recover and the United States of America will emerge stronger than before," the President said. "Let there be no doubt: health care reform cannot wait, it must not wait and it will not wait another year." Read the full text of Presid...
The nicest thing that can be said about Jindal is that he is horribly muddled. The difference between him and the Pres is like night and day. He comes across as the GOP's token "young brown person" and he is parroting exactly what they want: contradictions and stupidity. (You cannot prove to the world that you don't care about your constituents and then think you can be elected to the White House... that is mind-boggling.) He has put his political ambitions above the needs of the people of Louisiana, proving that he is in the wrong job. I hope Louisiana throws him out. In any case, he will have to take the consequences of his actions.

The cartoon was offensive, and the excuses even more so. If it was about something else, then why did it mention the stimulus.
On a cheerier note, Pres. Obama's visit was one big celebration in Ottawa. Our Prime Minister acquitted himself very well, even though he is a Tory. Haha!
News and views
North Beach, San Francisco, viewed from Telegraph Hill. Today has been a valiant struggle not to let French bureaucracy get the best of me. Frankly, I'd rather be in San Francisco at the moment, having dinner at my favourite trattoria in North Beach. Anyone have a Bay Area writing or photograp...
Murakami has the courage of his convictions. I want to point out the part where he tells his Israeli audience that, like himself, they too are eggs, as some readers may miss it. So I don't have a problem with the Wall and the Egg part, because all too often it is true, at any give time, in some parts of the world.
The importance of writing stories
Egg-shaped opening in stairway exit, historic city walls in York, England. One of the writers I admire most is Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami. This week in Israel, Murakami talked about about his decision to accept a controversial literary prize and why it's important to fight the system. Th...
I agree completely! I've been sickened by the level of so-called reporting for years now. It seems they just go for padding and burbling to fill airtime. It's exhausting, which is why I'm very very selective in what I listen to these days. They all need to grow up! The GOP remind me of the "dog in a manger".
Sweet twins, I wish for them a much better world than the one they've stepped into! xoxo
A kaleidoscope of spin
Sometimes what seems simple and straightforward - like this iron gate on the design workshop at Sagrada de Familia, Barcelona - can become unhinged. It's easy enough to take a fact, twist it a certain angle, polish it this way or that and manipulate it into something else entirely, i.e. the kal...
I watched it live. He was superb. He showed some people that he is no fool (hooray!) and I totally adore him. What more can I say. A true leader. Yes, I could gush.... How can I not admire his intelligence, grasp of issues, engaging manner, and most of all, let me say it again, that he is no fool! Get it GOP????
Hail to the Chief
An excerpt from Mike Madden's article in Salon about President Barack Obama's prime-time news conference: "The White House news conference, the first since Inauguration Day, put a calm, confident President Obama in front of the nation for an hour; while he didn't make any news, he easily drove ho...
Baraka!
Good for you. I love this story.

The art of the deal
She spotted it right away, but pretended not to notice. In French, she asked him to show her Russian religious icons, one after the other. But she wasn't interested in Russian icons; not today. Before that afternoon at the brocante at Parc des Princes, she'd never been interested in daggers. But ...
So that's where the snow went! Here, it's the drip-drip-drip of melting ice as the snow says bye-bye -- for now!
Enjoy your snow day. xxoo
Taking a snow day
View of courtyard from our balcony, as snow is falling. Photos were taken with my little pocket Konica-Minolta, as batteries on another camera weren't charged. Paris Parfait is taking a snow day. Wherever you are and whatever the weather, hope your weekend is off to a good start. Snow on ba...
I'd rather be at the Embarcadero than the Superbowl. (In any case, I prefer baseball!)

Super Bowl mania
No matter which team wins, remember, it's only a game. I'm just sayin'. Here, have a mini banana split; you'll feel better. If football's not your thing, take a look at Christina's beautiful photo of Nikki Giovanni, with the bonus of a poem. Photos (top) from Farmers' Market, Embarcadero and ...
I was a huge Banana Republic fan (the original company), and had many of their items in my closet. I still have a khaki shirt and three bone bangles... Of course that was in the days when I was a travel correspondent. I shopped at their San Francisco store and the rest of the time through their wonderful catalogue (remember it?).
Ahhh, some of the old days were good old days!
Now, voyager.
A vignette of 19th-century ivory opera glasses, an ivory notebook, lined with aqua silk moire - a gift from my friend Gabrielle - and sea shells on a French creamware platter. Now, voyager is one of my favourite films. An early 19th-century pocket-sized bibliotheque du voyageur or "library" of...
For me, it is precisely in getting to know people through their "personal opinions"!!! (I refer to the strange quotation in your post, from a reader).
My eye went straight to that open book on the bottom shelf...what a treasure it must be! xxoo
Three.
Coffret de curiosités, Val d'Loire, France. Click photo to view detail. Three years ago today, Paris Parfait was born. Now, 1,621 posts and hundreds of photographs later, it has evolved into something resembling a virtual curiosity cabinet. As a few readers have suggested, "I never know what I ...

Flying confetti, Chinese New Year celebrations, New York
What stuck in my mind when I listened to this yesterday was when the Pres said it was also "for my daughters." I couldn't help thinking of "other politicans" with daughters (save, perhaps, chelsea c.) who did nothing..
Equal pay for equal work - at last!
Stairwell, historic home, Savannah, Georgia. It's been a long, hard climb, but today President Barack Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act into law! Hallelujah! This means equal pay for men and women doing the same job. And Lilly Ledbetter herself was by the President's sid...
Lovely, lovely! and inspired.

Hearts & Aprons
An actual real pattern is being printed for this one. Working on the directions now. The little heart was a last minute addition. I thought it was a great place for any myriad of appliques so several suggested patterns will be included. This and the Frannie Bag will be the first sewing patter...
I joined in the giveaway last year, and it was wonderful! This year I haven't been able to, but I'd love to throw my name in your hat!
one world, one heart, many hearts
.....i have decided to participate in this year's One World, One Heart giveaway. you can meet new people and give something away. hey, why not? .....my gift will be a small quilt called renewal. this piece, originally what if #117, was most recently published in the article i did for Q...
Brilliant passage, Tara. Memory is indeed fragile and impermanent, which explains why history repeats itself. To those who say, "Why don't we ignore this or that and it will go away", I always answer, "Because if you do, you are destined to repeat it." (But then, no one listens to me!!! hehe!)
Travels with Herodotus
Iron window sculpture and graffiti, Barcelona, Spain. As much of today's news is too awful to contemplate, let's not go there. Here's an excerpt about recording history from the late Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski's fascinating book Travels with Herodotus: "...Sometimes, when the offices...
I'm 100% behind Vanessa's statement.
You write... "objective, ethical reporting is too often abandoned for television ratings and/or placating conservative advertisers." This is the core of the problem. It started happening in magazines about 15 years ago, when the "advertorial" reared its ugly head. Editorial is now the slave of the advertising side. So, really, how can we believe anything under these cicrumstances.
Vigilance!
Of photos and fear-mongering
Ancient wood and iron decorative shutters over a shopfront, Barcelona, Spain.. Today I was out buying things for my camera (and the new Bruce Springsteen CD Working on a Dream). I've been busy cataloguing photos - copying nearly 4,000 images onto CDs, so I can delete them from my laptop. And be...
David Plouffe is so gifted. I wanted to add that Plouffe is a very Quebec name; there's a famous novel titled Les Plouffe, which was also made into a film. I keep thinking David Plouffe must be of Quebec origin (and that makes me proud)! :-)
We can help make a difference
David Plouffe, Obama for America campaign manager and Mitch Stewart, executive director of Organizing for America, discuss the grassroots movement for change and how we can help. Get involved here. Accountability and transparency in the Obama administration: how refreshing after eight years o...
Freedom resides in us: It's invisible, it's a feeling that no one can take away from us, even if the door is locked and we don't have the key. Attitudes open those doors....

A celebration and a giveaway
Carved wooden courtyard doorway icon, 18th-century, Antwerp, Belgium. In celebration of US President Barack Obama's inauguration, I am hosting a giveaway. Prizes are a copy of Art from the Heart by Catherine Matthews-Scanlon and a surprise from a French brocante. To enter, please leave a brief ...
Thank you for saying, so very clearly, what I've been gritting my teeth about. The whining and winging of some people tell me they live in utter darkness; they don't want things to get better, it seems. For the first time in 8 years, there is hope, intelligence, compassion, humanity, and positive action called President Obama in the White House. From Day 1, he has shown signs of his mettle. anyone who doesn't want to give him a chance is a destroyer, a negative energy, that we do NOT want!
Illumination
Candlelight, Paris. "An age is called 'dark,' not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it." - novelist James Michener. Ed. note: I've begun moderating comments, due to some readers who apparently subscribe to the Sarah Palin "School of Delusion and Nonsense:" Memo ...
One word: BEAUTIFUL!
Oh happy day!
Changing history: One of two "magic" Obama flags my Canadian friend Gillian bought last month during our whirlwind trip to New York. The flag is perched on an architectural model. I wanted to photograph the Obama flag in various locations around Paris, but it rained. Come back soon for the sto...
31 rue Cambon endangered? Oh, non! At least it should be preserved as a Musée Chanel! And I agree the white paper cutout dress is très original! xoxo
Rumblings on rue Cambon
Rather ominous economic rumblings on rue Cambon: layoffs at tbe venerable House of Chanel. C'est pas vrai! Oui, c'est vrai! A Crime Scene Investigation vehicle is part of a French film crew preparing to shoot scenes Thursday near the Ritz on rue Cambon. Chanel's 31 rue Cambon vitrines are as ...
