Seated on the divan beside Langdon, Sophie drank her tea and ate a scone, feeling the welcome effects of caffeine and food. Sir Leigh Teabing was beaming as he awkwardly paced before the open fire, his leg braces clicking on the stone hearth. -The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown Just... Continue reading

I had originally planned to don us in duck costumes, specifically Huey, Dewey and Louie. I even did what I never do, and started making the costumes well in advance. However, night before the run and I couldn't for the life of me get the heads done. Which, was probably... Continue reading

With the excitement surrounding The Great Gatsby release, I thought it would be fun to take you on a tour through Sydney and explore the locations where Baz Luhrmann brought The Great Gatsby scenes to life. image: Warner Bros. The upside of being tiny is that you curl up well, like a cat, on most seats. Which particularly came in handy when I found myself catching some shut eye on a Thursday night Cathay Pacific flight bound direct for Hong Kong. A few hours of catching zzz's, and I... Continue reading

That's 9 hours of driving right there. Nine. long. hours. 776 kms. We passed only 8 towns. When I say towns, some of these were just gas stations. Maybe another building or two. If you were in the US, that would probably be like driving from California, straight through Arizona.... Continue reading

There was music from my neighbor’s house through the summer nights. In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars. At high tide in the afternoon I watched his guests diving from the tower of his raft, or... Continue reading

The notion originated with Daisy's suggestion that we hire five bathrooms and take cold baths, and then assumed more tangible form as 'a place to have a mint julep'. -The Great Gatsby, F. Scott. Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby didn't hold my attention very well, I suppose I like my books... Continue reading

She heard John's footsteps coming up the stairs. She was eagerly awaiting his customary visit. John's words were her only link with the world. If only she could talk, tell him how much his presence and his conversations meant to her. If only she could go down to Alex and... Continue reading

Skydiving was liking falling towards a surrealist art piece created by the patterns of the land. You suddenly see another side to Australia, that, if you haven't been in awe before, you will be. You'd think plunging down to earth would feel just like that. Plunging. You are, after all,... Continue reading

Crossing the porch where we had dined that June night three months before, I came to a small rectangle of light which I guessed was the pantry window. The blind was drawn, but I found a rift at the sill. Daisy and Tom were sitting opposite each other at the... Continue reading

Cersei set a tasty table, that could not be denied. They started with a creamy chestnut soup, crusty hot bread, and greens dressed with apples and pine nuts. Then came lamprey pie, honeyed ham, buttered carrots, white beans and bacon, and roast swan stuffed with mushrooms and oysters. Tyrion was... Continue reading
Thanks :) I find it really brings the books more to life when I go to make the food after reading it. I stopped by your blog, really interesting reading!

At a table near the window we drank tea with lemon, scalding through the thick cups, and ate our way through sardines on buttered white bread and even a few slices of torta. -The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova If a book was to combine some of my favourite things, The Historian... Continue reading

STICKJAW FOR TALKATIVE PARENTS. - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl Rummaging through old candy recipe books, I came across an old stickjaw recipe. Seems it really is a real candy, also known as coconut taffy, although it's a hard candy rather than a sticky one. I did these... Continue reading

"What do you think that is?" she asked me, again pointing with her stick; "that, where those cobwebs are?" "I can't guess what it is, ma'am." "It's a great cake. A bride-cake. At 6.00 he took a shower. He boiled some potatoes and had open sandwiches of pickled herring in mustard sauce with chives and egg on a rickety table outside the cottage, facing the bridge. He poured himself a shot of aquavit and drank a toast to himself. After that he... Continue reading
I agree Cheryl, wild ones are best! I remember as a kid, our next door neighbour had a full wall length of blackberry shrubs. Come summer, we'd pick and eat the berries with their kids. We'd come home stuffed full, with stained clothing, but no berries leftover for jam making. I'd like to think I'd have a bit more restraint as an adult, but I doubt it!

Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls. He liked thick giblet soup, nutty gizzards, a stuffed roast heart, liver slices fried with crustcrumbs, fried hencod's roes. Most of all he liked grilled mutton kidneys which gave to his palate a fine tang of faintly scented... Continue reading
