I like Gillislee as a pick here but maybe not as far below the radar as the prior year picks. My pick is defensive tackle Edwin Herbert. This guy can do 35 bench reps at 225 lbs and run 4.6 in the 40. Because he is a Juco transfer he isn't known on the talk circuit. The young man is already in school and hopefully the spring session will get him ready to crack the lineup in 2009.
Hi Jeremy, Demps and Rainey already run up the middle and with good effectiveness. They just can't be expected to do that when the D knows that it's coming. When it's 4th and 1 and the box is stacked, you can't replace the power necessary to hit a linebacker and get the extra yard. Tebow has it. Richardson has it. We're on a 4 year plan here. Tebow can do it next year. (Perhaps) Moody the year after with no depth. We've been lulled into complacency with a freak QB who has disguised the need for a power RB. There ain't no more Tebow's on the horizon and we need to do things a more conventional way in the future.
An under appreciated need for the Gators: WHO will get the tough yard on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 after Tebow graduates??? Rainey? Demps? Brantley? Debose? - No way. Gillislee - Doubtful, Moody - Possible and for only 1 year. This is a critically important and unmet need. Trent Richardson...you would be quite welcome in Gainesville.
Re: Who gets to wear # 1. Assuming the following parameters. 1)Player must be a legit shot to be a # 1 draft pick and 2) Must be in a position that can wear # 1 (QB, RB, WR or DB). Knowing Meyer, the final candidate will also have to earn the number as a starter so guys like Brantley, Debose and Will Hill would be out of the running. According to these criteria, the best candidates are Janoris Jenkins and Joe Haden, in that order. From a technical perspective, it could be Chas Henry. He's a good enough punter to have a shot at number one. Spring performance will also be a big factor but I'm betting on Janoris Jenkins wearing # 1 next year.
