I agree. Howard is of no value batting against pitchers he can't hit. He is of value against pitchers he can hit. Just because he entered into a hefty contract years ago is no lock on a guaranteed starting position for 162 games a year. He should sit and watch Ruf bat.

Nice win by Cole and save by Paps, after he soiled his drawers in his last two save opportunities. It's hard to get to worked up about this way under .500 club. Unfortunately, as a lifetime fan, there's nowhere else to go.

awh, thanks for the link to Jr.s email inbox. I got a great laugh out of that. I had forgotten all about Heidi Hamels. Pat Burrell's email was the best. 2nd place goes to the eBay notice. Great stuff! Thanks!

I caught the end of the game on ESPN last night. The highlight to me was a fleeting shot of a fan standing up wearing a Phillies logo shirt missing the first two and the last three letters. All that was left was the word "ill"! That's how I feel about this team. This was a likeable "golden age" team that was decimated when the Jr. GM took over. To paraphrase Bogart, we'll always have 2008 and the WFC. Papelbon really hurt his end of July trade value with these two back to back turd games. He left me feeling ill.

GBrett, thanks for the Doc tribute to Utley. I enjoyed it.

This thread header appeared on June 25th. Will we get a new one following the All Star game? We were spoiled. Remember when we would get two thread headers a day? On would wrap up last night's game and the second one would prep for the upcoming game and serve as the thread header for that game's in game comments. C'mon Comcast, fix this sad situation!

Cyclic, I miss Beerleaguer, too. We need to get Jason W. and Comcast to contact one of us to write pro bono thread headers to keep it looking real, instead of this shell of its former greatness.

It's fitting that both the Phillies and the BL thread headers are both sucking at the same time. I think RAJ would make a great Commish. It would be a sure way to get him out of the Phillies GM chair. As Commish, he could then swap the Pirates and the Braves, moving the Bucs into our division and move out the Braves to the NL Central where they belong.

Cyclic writes: "Will Beerleaguer reach double figures in headers this month?" Where's Jason? This non thread header stuff really sucks. You'd at least think that on a Monday morning, there'd be a series wrap-up two paragraph thread header, but no...nothing. This site is really in the dumper and it is Comcast's fault.

Why do we have to play Toronto, it seems like, every year? Why can't we play the Houston Astros?

This thread has reverted to an old standby BL theme of arguing which back up bench warmer player is better. Today's discussion features the Erik Kratz vs.Wil Nieves cage fight. The truth is that usually your back-up catcher doesn't play much.

I vote for the team that has an outside chance each year and during bad years is around .500, than for a team that has eight consecutive losing seasons while they "rebuild". Think Houston Astros and vote NO on that style of baseball management.

Cyclic, thanks for the retro rainout message.

These west coast games are killers for the fans. It's tough to stay up late and then lose, better to hit the sack around the 5th inning and read about it in the morning. Let's see how we do today. At least our "better" bullpen pitchers got rested last night.

It think Comcast should contact the more prolific BL commenters and assign them each one day a week to write a thread header. BAP, clout, NEPP, etc. could each be assigned a day. They could spend 5 minutes writing two paragraphs and email it to the Comcast unpaid college intern who will build the new thread, pop in the text, add a photo and away we go! It doesn't seem that hard to me. Seeing the same thread header each day, especially during the season, gets old really quick.

I think that the NSA is monitoring our comments, but Comcast is not.

Steve sums it up pretty well.

I hope the BL gods are reading these latest comments as phaithful BLers discuss replacement blogs to go to instead of BL, because BL has stopped producing thread headers. At least they need to reinstall the "Jump to Latest Comments" feature.

I second NEPP as the new BL thread head writer. This crap with no thread headers has got to stop.

GBrettfan wrote: "Ben Davis speculated that Diekman didn't have the confidence and closer's mentality to get those last three outs last night. I wonder if he's right." I remember that Ryan Madson talked about the mental issues that he faced from going from a spot starter role to middle relief and back and forth. He seemed to have mastered it as he matured. Maybe Diekman needs to mature.

What? No game thread header yesterday. No game wrap-up, pre game thread header today. I love BL's format and commenters, but Comcast has really let this site down. I'm sure that some unpaid college student would love to write thread headers for BL. Comcast could set up some phony unpaid internship position and get a local college sports phan to write up a daily blurb or two for us. Shame on Comcast. While I'm am venting, let me add that I have always hated Dan Uggla and that I still do. My dislike of him grows stronger each game he plays. Also, Diekman needs to learn some control.

NEPP, Thanks. I left the Philly area when Chris Wheeler was just a fill-in type guy. He never impressed me. How did he get so much influence power? Goat photos?

DPat - my sincere condolences to you on your great loss. I've always enjoyed your comments.

NEPP, I'm confused. You wrote, "Considering how Wheels got Whitey fired." Didn't Ashburn die on the road, while still working for the broadcast team?
