The TiCats are posturing for a more lucrative deal. That's as easy to read as a Ron Jr. option pass. They and City Hall will work out an 11th hour deal and the stadium will get built in West harbour location.... it will be a beautiful stadium and arriving by Go Train or LRT from Stoney Creek will make it all the more pleasant.
So lets get on with it... get the darned thing built already... don't screw this up.
Cheers from a fed up fan... Snake.
Morning reading, Saturday edition
Some interesting reading this morning for Ticat fans. The Spec has three items on the stadium issue: a piece on the potential resumption of discussions between the city and Ticats on the stadium issue, a story on some councillors rethinking their position on the West Harbour location and an edi...
They are the "Hamilton" TigerCats... anything else would be totally unacceptable.
I like Bob Young, but if he moves my team... I can learn to hate him.
Cheers.... Snake

WOW... lots of good comments and also lots of junk...
There are contributions above that come from Bloggers I have yet to see on this site... who are all these people???
It truly amazes me how many experts there are when it comes time to be critical... Didn't your momma ever teach you any manners anyway???
I would bet my season's tickets that most of those negative bloggers are people who haven't been to TiCat game in years.
I would counter some of their comments, but it is such dreck that I won't waste my time on them. They will just crawl back under their rocks and wait in ambush for the next chance at attacking the TiCats... maybe it will be another Tiger in Gore Park.
My thoughts on the stadium are well documented in this blog site... and the regulars know how I feel...
1.) The City will screw up the PanAM stadium just like the Red Hill Expressway, Gore Park, City Hall reno, etc.
2.) The PanAm stadium needs a tenant. Right now the only one we have is the TiCats.
3.) The TiCats and partners are investing $50M so they should have been invited to the meetings right from the very beginning and not after the bonehead councillors voted on the location.
4.) Bob Young has done more for this city than any TiCat owner in recent memory. Without him, there would be no Hamilton TiCats.
Cheers... Snake.
Bob Young says no to West Harbour
My colleague Wade Hemsworth - a former Ticat beat reporter himself - is reporting that Bob Young has said unequivocally that the West Harbour won't work. Here is Young's letter from the Ticat site.
Hey Boogie... I can relate to the dislocated thumb... as a teenager I attended a high school football camp hosted by the TiCats. I was a pretty good running back / receiver back in the day... LOL.
Anyway, I ran a simple curl pattern, turned around with my hands up and a bullet was flying at me that had been thrown by Joe Zuger... it caught the tip of my thumb and instantly disclocated it... being the macho football player that I was pretending to be in front of all my TiCat heros, I held in my screams and tears (even though I was in agony) and simply placed my hand on the turf while a friend stood on the thumb to straighten it out... (yeah I know... dumb move.) Anyway, I cannot open any doors that have those old push button handles because my thumb folds backward.
Moral of the story... when Jesse is in his 50's (like me) he will regret all those "old football injuries" cause they sure as heck hurt a lot now.
During my years of playing football... I disclocated my thumb and shoulder, broke two fingers and tore my ACL. I regret everyone of them now...
Cheers and pass the Tylenol... Snake
New podcast and some morning reading
Below is Episode 2 of the Scratching Post podcast, which features my interview with former Ticat running back Jesse Lumsden and current offensive lineman Marwan Hage. While the reaction to last week's premier was overwhelmingly positive, there were a few complaints - well, one - about the audio...
Hey Boogie... LOL LOL LOL.... 8~)
Thanks for the chuckles...
Cheers and giggles... Snake.
Obie says Ticats not interested in Jesse
I just got off the phone with Ticat general manager Bob O'Billovich and he says the Ticats don't have any interest in Lumsden at the moment. The team has imports DeAndra Cobb and Kenton Keith at running back - plus a couple of free agents likely in the pipeline. Obie said the only position they...
Jesse Lumsden's shoulder belongs in the "Hall Of Shame" along side Bobby Orr's knees... great athletes betrayed by weak / injured body parts....
What a shame... good kid, he deserves better, but his injuries started when he was at Mac.
Goof blocking... can be prevented if you type your comments in MS Word, spell check, then cut and paste into this blog.
Or do what I do, re-read and edit your entire blog before posting... cause sometimes it looks like I am a dyslexic who is typing with my toes.
Cheers.... Snake.

Hage is the rock solid foundation around which the rest of the O-Line is built... no doubt he is a solid player on the field, but more importantly, he's a leader in the locker room. I think sometimes people under estimate the power of a good team leader in the locker room. These guys lead by example, hold other players accountable, calm down a rookie's nerves and build confidence in others... at times they can be a more important influence than the coach... so locking him up with a contract extension is another brilliant move by Obie...
Another piece of the TiCat's Grey Cup puzzle is in place....
Cheers... Snake.
The Sultan speaks
I spoke with Marwan Hage and Obie regarding Hage's new contract and my story will be in the paper tomorrow. It's not particularly earth-shattering but it turned out well enough. I also have some info on the Tre Smith release and, response to some requests on this blog today, an update on Kenton ...
Hey Boogie.... thanks for the translation cause I had no idea what Pwick was trying to say... thought I was having my own "stoupid" moment.
Cheers... Snake.
Post draft reading and analysis
Here's my story on yesterday's draft, focusing of course on the Ticats' picks. One of the most interesting things was Obie's comments on the decision to draft fullback Sam Fournier just a year after using the sixth overall pick on Darcy Brown. "We think that both Darcy and Andre (Sadeghian) nee...
Good work msd... you either have a great memory or too much time to research your info... LOL.
Anyway, your list supports my claim that other than OL's our draft prospects have either been underachievers or fodder...
with the exception of...
Corey Grant... whose best years were in Regina.
Augie... who was tried but failed as a starting LB but is a solid back up.
Reid... who is a solid back up DL.
Anyway, the NFL draft is no different... I can think of a few big name QBs who were major busts... Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn.
So much for all those scouting reports.
Cheers... Snake.
Obie on the draft
Some quick thoughts from Obie on the day's selections.
I trust Obie's judgement when selecting players... draft day is just a crap shoot... you never know if a player is all hype or if he can deliver on the field when required.
Take a look at our last few drafts... other than OL's who else stands out???
Bauman's an underachiever...
Barker is unproven but has upside potential at safety and is great on ST's.
Ummm, I just ran out of names... all the others are practice squad fodder...
So I don't much care about who gets drafted unless they are OL's. It's the hogs up front that make an offence work and if they are all NI's that can strengthen your team at other critical positions. Besides, it's better to get an established NI receiver, LB or DB through free agency or trade.
Now, I will eat my words if Ryan Hinds turns out to be the next Wayne Shaw... Or if we are lucky enough to get Giguere and he becomes the next Dave Stala... 8~)
Somebody, anybody, please give me a reason to be excited about the TiCat's 2010 draft prospects...
Hate to admit this, but I think the Argos handled the draft perfectly... traded for a bonafide kicker and still picked 2nd and 3rd... nice work.
Hope the Argos come back strong this year, cause it's way more fun to kick their butts when they are playing well... LOL.
Cheers... Snake.
Obie on the draft
Some quick thoughts from Obie on the day's selections.
Hey Drew... should have asked a 14 year old to do the Facebook stuff for you.... they get it a lot easier than us old guys....
Cheers.... Snake.
The Facebook riddle solved
I've been struggling mightily to figure out this Facebook thing. The central issue was that I couldn't get posts from this blog to update automatically on my newly-created Facebook page. I'm no longer a young man but I feel I have reasonably decent grasp of basic technological concepts. But this...
Good to see that Chris Z at The Star agrees with me that the TiCats already had a 1st round pick by selecting Zac Carlson last year. So not only does Zac represent a 1st round pick but he has a one year head start on the 2010 class...
Trading Chris Bauman to get Rob Maver looks like a solid deal... Bauman has yet to live up to his potential... he's too slow and his hands are not that reliable... he was basically a decoy in last year's offence. So if he is not going to be a part of the game plan and he is not a threat why bother keeping him? Only risk I see is, he could end up turning into another Chris Getzlaf... who flourished in Sask's offence where they spread the ball around a lot better than the TiCats do.
I like the idea of two NI kickers on the roster... then you have a back up plan if one of them gets injured.
So, I would trade Bauman for a starting NI punter (Maver) any day of the week.... but then I am not Obie.
Hey msd... are you thinking about Matt Morencie the OL who went back to university and played for Windsor Lancers and was the top rated OL in the CIS??? The TiCats signed him. We now have the top three rated OL from the 2009 draft, Rottier, Carlson and Morencie.
Cheers... Snake.
Some more analysis and pre-draft reading
Here's my story from today's paper on the three linebackers that the Ticats have signed. It would appear most of my snap analysis was on the mark, which is good. More and more, I'm trying to write stories about what various moves mean more than the transactions themselves. There was, however, on...
Hey msd... I just had deja vu all over again...
Here's my one cent worth... I have to be brief cause I'm watching the Habs leading 1-0 in 3rd period of game 7... doesn't get any better than that.
Grothe... who cares... could have been the next Timmy Chang.
If Q.Porter is on schedule he should be ready to blossom this season. If not, we have Glenn who could potentially have an MVP season with the receivers Obie is stock piling.
TiCats already had 1st pick in this year's draft.... they got Zac Carlson last season.
Too bad we cannot get Simon Giguere...
So long to all the released players... not a keeper amongst the bunch of them. Won't be missed.
Cheers... Go Habs Go... Snake
What the moves mean
I'll be following up with Those That Know but here are my quick thoughts on these moves. 1. The linebackers will get a chance to back up the B.C. three, particularly Otis Floyd, who is no longer a young man by football standards. Perhaps one will emerge as diamond in the rough and be groomed as ...
Hey Eagle1 and Boogie... I've been away for a few days and just starting to catch up on the blogs....
"Yall" did a fine job of covering the latest stories... and setting that agent straight. Agents are the Used Car Salesmen of sports... tell you anything to make a deal and sell you a lemon.
As for Danny "fold like a deck of cards" MacManus... I was never a fan... he was over rated. Put a little pressure on him and he would throw the ball to anybody to avoid a sack... even the DB's.
I totally agree that Sudsie got thoroughly scapegoated. (Is that even a word???) And that RJ was the worst OC we ever had... good thing his Daddy was the boss.
As for Grothe making it big in the CFL... who knows and who cares... he may be the next Flutie or the next Chang, but until a player is in uniform and actually playing CFL brand of football, you can never know. Although if he cannot put any velocity on the ball how is he ever going to throw the out pattern to the wide side of the CFL field?
Trying to recall how many CFL QBs made it in the NFL.... Flutie, Garcia, Moon, Capp come to mind... not sure who else... but that's not very many when you think Capp played for Vikings in the 1970's.
Cheers... Snake.
Ethical choices and other good reads
An interesting day yesterday on a number of fronts. In order to gain access to yesterday's closed workout at Ivor Wynne that produced this story, I had to agree that I wouldn't identify any of the players in attendance or even detail the number of players working out at each position. With the d...
Hey Obie-wan don't you mean Gary Buttman???
Cheers... Snake.
Off in the off-season (and morning reading)
Another mini-break for me - five days since my last post - as we settle into another one of those little dead zones that follows free agency and the e-camp but before the draft. A look at the reading from other papers indicates that most of us beat scribes are going hard after soft features to f...
Enjoy your R&R Drew... it's well deserved, cause I know how tough it is to get paid to hang out at Training Camp and go to TiCat games... LOL.
Just kidding... really meant it when I said enjoy your R&R. Cause this is going to be a BIG season for the TiCats and they will keep you busy writing about all those wins.
My expectations are really high for the team this year. We had a decent team last season and Obie has made a lot of realy good additions this year.
My excitement started to awaken with the Free Agency signings and peaked when they announced the front office signings of Obie and Marcel.
The FA's that Obie signed could all be starters for any other CFL team... that's how I usually measure a player's quality. Conversely when we release players and there aren't a lot of teams chasing after them, it is pretty evident we made the right decision.
Cheers to a Grey Cup victory... Snake.

Aha Boogie... so you know of the old public washrooms.... you probably also recall the 100 year old oak trees they cut down to improve Gore Park and the interlocking brick that was redone approx three times...
Yep, sure gives me confidence that the PanAm Stadium is in good hands... but lets not go back to that one.
I enjoy your sarcastic wit re all things mundane...
You are probably much like myself, and have a very low tolerance for anything stupid.
Cheers... Snake.
Random observations from Cops and Cats
I'm at Highland in Dundas and here are a few thoughts. Arland Bruce is in shape - he looks like he could play four quarters tomorrow. He made the single most impressive play I saw. Maurice Mann has an outgoing personality, to put it mildly. He thanked the refs for coming out. He looks long and at...
C'mon Boogie... get a grip man... Drew's story was an Advertising Feature... there really was no basketball game. This was all a sick prank by some moron at TiCat Land just to draw attention to this team. That's it... they should fire Drew, all the TiCat players who supposedly played basketball and all the high highschool students too...
And to protect myself from this unabashed marketing, I am going to go and live in a cave somewhere under Gore Park... just me and my Tiger.
Cheers... Snake.

There's a lot to like about the TiCats playing B-Ball in the local high schools...
1.) Raising money for charity.
2.) Lots of good will being generated with the students... hopefully translates into new generation of youthful fans coming to the games.
3.) Great way to build team camaraderie long before Training Camp opens....
All around another good idea from the TiCat braintrust....
Cheers to all TiCat staffers.... Snake.

Obie signs extension
From the Ticats. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that the team has extended the contract of General Manager Bob O'Billovich for two years with a mutual option in 2012. The 2010 season will mark the 34th season O'Billovich has spent in the Canadian Football League as a player, coach or adm...
I posted this at the bottom of the 300 or so responses to the Tiger Hoax.... and was afraid it would be lost. So I appologize but since the regular bloggers are still having some fun, I wanted to get my 2 cents heard....
Just a few thoughts for sharing... and if I offend you... good because it was intended...
There are people in this city that need to get a grip on reality... these self professed saviours of mankind can be found everywhere and they are the most dangerous of all people... for they are the vocal few who stir up such hornet's nests that they force censorship and their own twisted sense of life on everyone else. (Rush Limbaugh comes to mind.)
I find it very interesting that most of the complainers and quitters (threatening to boycott TiCats and The Spec) have not yet bothered to blog on this site until now... where have all these people been for the last few years???
Now I know what happened to TiCat Great... he blogged here in an exchange with my buddy msd.
In the past millenia (boy it feels weird saying that).... we had a Head Coach - Jim Trimble, you may remember him. He would say the most controversial things and was always being talked about in the media... because he believed, "There is no such thing as bad press, as long as they are talking about your team, that's what's important."
So, congrats to the TiCats on a brilliant marketing plan. I cannot remember the last time so many people were talking about the TiCats... Jim Trimble would be proud of you.
Cheers... Snake

Ticat hoax morning reading
I want to make something very clear: THE TIGER IN GORE PARK STORY IS A HOAX. There, everybody cool? Because I received a lot of email over the weekend on this issue over the weekend. The bold text below are emails I received - I can't wait to check my voice mail later this morning. The original ...
Wow... I thought if I quoted LOTR or ROTK I would reveal the geek within... but now that msd aka Yoda has started...
Dare I say he may have "let the Snake out of the bag"....
Geekisms aside... I have to agree with Jay Dubya... that was well said and I fully agree.

I have a story in today's paper, detailing the signings from yesterday - one of which I'd already blogged about - as well as some clarification on the Ticats' interest in Buck Pierce. Or should I say lack of interest. Just wanted to put a bullet in that rumour before it got out of hand. Spec col...
Hey Boogie... Obie is the consumate poker player.... you never know what he's thinking until he make his move.
I have no doubt he feigns lack of interest to influence salary demands from free agents... and conversely he shows false interest in a player he has no intention of signing so that they make higher salary demands on other teams.... resulting in a bigger slice of their Salary Cap pie being used up... an example (I think) is how we all thought he was going after Rob Murphy last year until Argos signed him to a fat contract, when all along it was Gauthier that Obie truly wanted.
Probably no truth to what I just wrote but what the heck, sounds good anyway...
Cheers, now back to the Masters... Snake.

Better is Better.... in football skills, smarts and physical abilities but that also includes health. No need to bring in another damaged QB like Matt Dunnigan... yeah for you youngsters Matty was a TiCat saviour back in 1996 until his career ending concussion took him out in week 6 after posting a 4-1 record. After 12 concussions during his career, Matt lives with memory loss, headaches and mood swings. These are all symptoms of post head trauma and Buck needs to be careful about his future health.
However, if he insists on playing, then the only way I can see Buck having any value to the TiCats is if he is willing to sign for 3rd string QB money and then only play if and when Glenn or Porter aren't getting the job done. That minimizes the risk to him and the TiCats.
Cheers.... Snake.
A few things...
A few things worth discussing, so let's get to it. 1. The Ticats potential interest in Buck Pierce. Yes, the Cats did have a scout at the University of Hawaii pro day where Pierce worked out last week but from what I'm told, it wasn't just to look at Pierce. Given that the Cats just signed Glen...
