The NFL (mock) draft as beat writers see it
Jimmy Johnson used to spend hours reading mock drafts as part of his draft-day preparations. He used to say that some of the most accurate tidbits of information he got on what other teams were likely to do came from the beat writers that covered those teams. And that's the reason he used to go ...
Dalton,
You said it all and very well too :)
Philosophy difference with Miami, N.E. [Update]
[Update: The Dolphins announced they had no unrestricted free agents visit the team Wednesday.] The accepted myth around some NFL circles is that Bill Parcells long-ago planted a philosophy in former assistant Bill Belichick that the New England coach has harvested religiously in bringing great...
I have to agree that the difference is Pats reloading Phins rebuilding. You never know team might get a fill in at CB with a vetern. I doubt it because it seems tuna's pass defense stradegy is to give the passer as little time as possible thus reducing the time a cb has to cover a WR. I am happy with the way things are going and this draft falls in our favor with DE/LB hybreds being plentiful and the second tier CB position deep. We will grab a 2nd round cb and a late developemental pick to go along with the second rounder. Another DL rotator a mid round wr(FO doesn't thinlk this position is a big need) along with a LB Mathews, Cushing, English ect) We will continue to grow and get better and he is right on pace for his 3 yr project

KJL13,
I agree with you though I put Mathews ahead of english in round 1.
I would also add Butler and D.J. moore at 2a. I would also put Barwin and Sintim ahead of Hood. Either way I expect atleast 1 LB most likely 2 in first 3 rounds, a CB and DT. Those wanting a WR are going to be disappointed I believe.

Draft order, what picks need to bring [Update]
The NFL has released its official draft order for the April 2009 draft and although the order might change slightly at the end of rounds 3-7 because of the addition of compensatory picks, you can pretty much bank on much of this remaining. So here's the 411 on the Dolphins: They have nine overal...

Those of that keep mentioning that OLB is not a need and should not be a position we take in first round might be missing something here. First even though we have porter and roth that are quality starters, porter will need to be replaced(if his play continues at this level resigning will be steep) and roth doesn't get the pass rush team wants on 3rd down(passing downs). Maybe roth can be moved inside maybe not in the least he is a "run-down" OLB and/or a DE rotator. We need atleast a pass rusher PLUS porter's replacement. Remember Parcells believes we will make playoffs every year and thus draft in the mid-20s or hopefully in the 30s for the foreseeable future what this means it is rare that drafting in this position you have the oppurtunity to draft a true potential "game changer". Also parcell looks for his on defense though it is true they can be WRs or even RBs defensive game changers are DL or LBers. This is one of those rare years where it MIGHT be possible to draft one of these "GCers" How? Because of the depth at DE/LB position AND depth at the Tackle position. First, hopefully 3 QBs get drafted before our pick, the potential to have as many as 6 takles in the first round(Monroe, Smith, smith, Oher, Beatty, and Britten), 2 maybe 3 rbs(Wells, Moreno, and either McCoy or Davis), a TE, 3 CBs(Smith, Davis, and Jenkins), 4 WRS, 2 or maybe 3 DTs(Raji, Jerry, and maybe even hood), 2 DEs or possibally as many as 5(Orakpo, Ayers and possables Johnson, Gilbert, and Jackson) so if things go well for us that means 23 to 31 players that are not DE/OB could be drafted before our pick obviously not all will be or could even be BUT this leaves 6 de/lbers with "game change" potential(Curry, Cushing, Mathews, Maualuga, Brown, and Laurinaitis) this is LEAVING OUT English, Barwin) So what position is most likely to have a potential "game changer" left for us to choose from? At wr I see 2 and some maybe's Maclin and Crabtree both will be gone then a slew of potential busts in Bey, Nicks, Harvin, Britt, Iglesias, Williams, one or more will be available come the 56th pick of draft. At CB I see only w cbs I would draft at 25 Jenkins and Davis and both will be gone by then and then a slew of late 1st rounder/2nd rounders Smith, Smith, Moore, Allen, Butler, Byrd, Francies and 3 or 4 will be avalable to choose from at pick 44. So unless all 6 DE/LB(Curry, Cushing, Mathews, Maualuga, Brown, and Laurinaitis) are gone expect one of them to be our guy. Personally I want Maualuga, Cushing, Mathews, or Laurinaitis in that order with the 25th pick. With the 44th I want either D.J. Moore, Gilbert, Hood, S.Smith, A.Smith, Butler, Brace, or Britt(and even IF we get one of the 6 LBers and especially if Maualuga I'll take either English or Barwin before all other choices. With the 56th pick I want any of the above mentioned CBs or Sintim unless we draft 2 LBers with first 2 choices. Don't be surprised if we DO draft 2 LBers with the first 4 picks. We need a situational pass rusher(if Roth continues to start at OLB on run downs) PLUS a replacement for Porter after 2009 season.
top 4 picks(hopes)
25th - Maualuga, Cushing, Mathews(most likely)
44th - English, Barwin, D.J. Moore, A.Smith, Butler(best chance)
56th - Butler, Francies, Sintim(most likely IF only 1 LB drafted before this pick)
Parcells will draft what he believes is a potential game changer with the 25th pick for no other reason then you get few chances at them drafting in the mid-20s and later irregardless if we are loaded at that position or not :)

Green heads to Tennessee, elsewhere
You read here Wednesday that Eric Green visited with the Dolphins. The Dolphins have not brought players to South Florida this free agency period without having serious intentions to sign those players. In fact, the Dolphins signed all (two) players they brought to town before those guys left. E...

T.O. just released by the cowboys would he look good in aqua and orange for a yeqar or 2? I doubt he would cost what the tuna would pay BUT... :)
Eric Green (not that one) visits as UFA
The Dolphins announced today at 4 p.m. that Arizona cornerback (not the tight end) Eric Green is in town for a free agent visit. Green, 27 on March 16, has been a starter much of his time with the Cardinals the past four years. He started nine of 13 games this season but the Cardinals have prett...
With Tuna always looking for the next LT I can't imagine, with the depth of DE/LB, any other first round choice other then a LB. I am hoping for one of the 3 USC backers with English a definate possablity. In the 2nd I could see either Brace, D.J. Moore, or Britt being the choice with first one and with second center or wr. Unfortantely I don't see an CBs warrenting 1st round pick other then Davis or Jenkins and getting either Smith, butler or Moore in second round seems long. I am guessing if we get a CB in first 2 rounds it will have to be with first choice of second round thus having to choose between Britt or whatever corner is there. Personally I would take any of the 4 cbs mentioned ahead of WR if we have that chance and then draft a Robinskie or Iglesias or DT with the second one. Personally I would like the draft to fall where we get a Cushing then Moore, then Gilbert, Brace, or Jackson and getting a WR in 3rd or 4th round *shrugs*

Armando,
How about starting a "draft possablities" blog for all of us to comment and chat on? You could give a number of options at each of the first 3 picks we have in the first two rounds and why they would make sense. :)
Holliday free agent tour starts Thurs. [Update]
Vonnie Holliday became a free agent Monday when the Dolphins terminated his contract, but it didn't take long for teams to begin showing interest in him. Holliday fielded calls from five teams Tuesday and has visits with two of them already scheduled. The defensive end is scheduled to visit the ...
With this signing, one I am not completely sold on yet defer to those that know, it looks like we'll be drafting D. I expect with the depth of the DE/LB class we will go that way(English, Cushing, Mathews, ect) and best available at cb/wr positions in the second round though I wouldn't count out a T or C pick in round 3 or 4

Vonnie was a solid player for us that because of age and cost needed to be released. I expect a body or 2 to be brought in via the draft and undrafted FAs. His presence in the locker room will be missed but his on the field reps are needed to develop the younger DLmen.
I expect with the first 4 of our draft picks will go to CB, dl/olb, c, and wr or nt depending on who is available.
The wr position doesn't concern me as much as it seems to many others. Ginn has improved and Tony likes him and he would know more then any of us on that subject. Penne doesn't have the arm to take advantage of his speed and for now the guys Cam. Bess, ginn, london will do NOW if a player tuna loves drops to the 2nd pick of ours in second round or 3rd I expect he'll take the best avalable player in the first 4 rounds.
