I’ve been questioning my business recently, looking at Nutmeg’s bottom line and frankly wondering if it’s worth it. We seem to have lost touch with the true value of things. Inundated with budget brands and price wars from the big operators, we seem to have forgotten that hand crafted, beautifully made things take time, effort and skill. And that there is real value in that. In cake terms, sure we can pick up a birthday cake for a few dollars from our local supermarket. But it’s a mass produced, chemically driven product. A far cry from home baked cake using... Continue reading

My fax machine and I have been at stand off for months. It was going something like this: I would put the 'document that needed to be sent today at all costs' in the machine, press the big fax sign, listen to the silence of unco-operative machinery, then get into the car, tear up the road and get my lovely partner to fax it from his office. Today I decided to tackle the beast. First I gave it a good stare down - it quivered. Then I walked towards it - it shook. Then I picked up the manual and... Continue reading

I've often looked at my number three and thought she had a wise look in her eyes...like she's been here before. And I've never given it much thought...but this weekend I got a feeling - a sense of wonder really - as I watched her at her dancing showcase. There she was - perched on the edge of the stage in her ballet gear...and she just looked as if she belonged. Not just fitted the part...but really belonged - like it was a place so familiar it fitted like a glove. That being on stage was just part of her... Continue reading

Now that I'm five I can go to big school, he said. But I think the reality of that slowly crept up on him over the holidays and as the school term loomed nearer, the tears flowed a little, there was a little less patience and a bit more general out of sorts with the world. But the deed is done. You can see from his face he is in two minds - smiling because it comes so readily - smile at Cashar and he just can't help but smile back. But there are definite nerves underneath. I feel lost... Continue reading

Its a funny old business, this working from home thing. The "engine room" can become a highly charged space at times. Two slight people with big ideas creating in a space beneath a packed-to-the-rafters house. Head of creative The Engine Room And five children, three goldfish and a bunny rabbit can act as a very effective handbrake to all that creativity. The Support Team And so I have spent the morning trawling the streets looking for offices to lease. With the little ones in tow, it was heaps of fun. Number five spent her morning wriggling out of the pram... Continue reading

I am writing this post because I am feeling crazy cross …and in need of a completely biased rant about the state of childbirth and all things related in Australia today…as I see it! So fogive me if I ruffle a few feathers.. but sometimes, one's opinions just need to be out there! An American study recently published in the American Journal of Paediatrics concluded that babies can survive for up to 6 months on breast milk alone. Astonishing fact indeed…that as mammals, we are able to do what every single other mammal does – provide adequate nutrition for our... Continue reading

I am woefully bad at sticking to resolutions. Take the daily resolve not to shout at the kids. Broken by 8am usually - and thats on a good day. Or the equally frequent idea that I will not eat any cakes or chocolate for a day....shattered by a morning coffee. But my most regular failing is my failure to avoid alcohol. I start off each day intent on having a dry one but by mid afternoon, I am looking forward to that first lovely glass of wine and the rather fudgy state it induces that gets me through the witching... Its not often as a cake designer that you get to share the cake cutting ceremony. Today I was lucky enough to be there for a friend's 40th and share the Happy Birthday celebration. And there it was, a job defining moment. The gift of a cake, make personal with the colours of his age old soccer team. A crowd of friends and family gathered around. Everyone singing Happy Birthday, and in that moment, wishing him their love and blessings. You could see the emotion it evoked. That affirmation that everyone needs, that they are loved and important. And that... Continue reading

Life has been somewhat off the chain recently. What with me starting a new job baking for a friend, as well as focusing on my own lovely, thrilling and joy inducing business - www.nutmegcakesandcookies.com.au Add to that the man of the house commuting full time and building his own design business on the side and you can see why the household is running at full pressure. (Incidently, www.stickygreenfrog.com.au is one amazing and creative design company, if I do say so myself!) In light of this rather crazy state of affairs, I wanted to give the lovely Simon a fitting cake... Continue reading

I just had to put this picture up. Her current favourite game is climbing onto empty chairs, leaning over the back and toppling over. Needless to say, it always ends in tears. I am not entirely sure how long it will take her to realise that this happens each and every time she attempts it. Maybe she is going for the world record of how many times you can fall off a chair in a month - so far we are up to about 55 million. Nevertheless, you have just gotta love that smile - how pleased is she with... Continue reading

Bike riding is such a winter thing for us. We just never seem to get round to it in the summer - the call of the ocean is too strong I think. All everyone wants to do is swim and surf. but I love pottering along on the bikes, with the children careering around racing each other. It just seems to chill everyone out...even India, who complains about the bumps but has a grin on her face all the way around. Here is the gang, having a rest and a water stop. Must remember to do it more often! Continue reading

I delivered a cake today. A gift from a friend for a woman with a new baby. She looked a little non-plussed when she answered the door with this tiny bundle in her arms. And I wondered over the appropriateness of the gift. I mean, it's not exactly useful or even something to treasure. But it so hits the spot. Given out of love and affection. Ordered by the woman's friend, who wanted to give something beautiful, something to bring a smile. She wanted something the whole family could share, big sister too. And that is exactly what cake does.... Continue reading

I love the way the children slide into morning. stumbling sleepily downstairs in search of me for a morning cuddle. And here I am, found tapping away at the keyboard and trying to download the mountain of December photos, a record of the madness of it all! As I type, number four is perched on my knee.Bed hair, sleepy eyes and not a sound uttered as yet. Working his way into wakefulness. Very sweet. And to the nuts and bolts of this post. Cake madness that was last month. A special cake for a wonderful teacher. For a dear friend.... Continue reading

I can feel a mild sense of panic setting in. It is now December. I have zero Christmas shopping done and a diary so full I have no more writing space. Our current calendar of events is rather like a house of cards - one more and it may well all topple over. And if that wasn't enough, end of year mindless panic seems to have set in at school. Having had ALL YEAR to create sewing craft or costumes for the presentation day or extra choir activities, it seems to have been decided to cram it all in to... Continue reading

I know. Its been a while. And I really should be more chatty. After all, there is not much point in having a blog if you never write on it. But lets just say I've been busy, ridiculously, stupidly busy. So busy in fact, that I have become like a rabbit caught in the head lights - or running in circles. Busy with what? I hear you cry. Well, just to give you some idea. Creating. Baking sweet nothings, surrounded by sugar. Here's the latest in my quest for cake perfection: And when I'm not baking, I'm researching - too... This is the girl with the faraway smile. Curls in her hair and her very own style. This is the girl with dreams in her eyes Of princesses dancing and fairies that fly. This is the girl who takes olives to school Who eats jam with her vegemite, tells all what to do. This is the girl who can jump like a jack who has fire in her soul and always fights back. This is the girl who spins tales ‘til she’s blue Who lives in a world where everything’s true. This is the child who competes like a pro... Continue reading

We had a visitor for breakfast this morning. The more impressive male one wouldn't stay long enough for a photo. But the lady was more than content to munch up all my sunflower seeds. The children thought the seeds were just for King Parrots who dropped in. I told them I ate them...they thought that a little weird! Except Maia of course, who is a bit of a seed and nut freak. Anyway, safe to say, our visitor ensured the children were all completely off track when it came to focusing on the job at hand - namely getting out... Continue reading
