Sleep is a bit of a controversial subject in the Branchett house at the moment. Neither Ben nor Molly is particularly enamoured with the idea of going to bed in the evening, but for some strange reason I am struggling to get much sleep. The children, however, have no such problem! They have had a busy few days. Yesterday, Ben marched with his Beaver colony in the Remembrance day parade in the village just up from where we live. Me and Molly went too, whilst Dunc worked hard at DIY at home. Benjy Parading Ben and Molly both really enjoyed... Continue reading

I wrote the title of this blog post and coincidentally, as I did so, a lovely lady I have met via mutual friends who have also had prem babies, sent me a message on fb. Her little girl is in NICU at the moment and she is hopeful she will come home soon. She is so excited and relieved, but almost can't believe it would ever happen. And I can relate to that feeling so, so well. I'm pretty sure you'll be reading this and you know who you are...you're an amazing lady with an amazing family...sending all my love... Continue reading

So...on Monday 9th November 2009 we were finally allowed to bring Molly home, after 101 days in hospital. Here are the photos I really should have put up at the time!! Molly in her pink cardigan made by Nanny I have said this so many times tonight looking back over Molly's pictures, but I cannot believe how small she was!!! The day of discharge, Molly weighed a whole 3lb 13ozs...just over three times her birth weight. She was 38 weeks gestation when we came home. I absolutely LOVED Molly's first snow suit I was clearly excited...I think I wore make... Continue reading

Hello again...or hello for the first time if you have never read Molly's blog before! I can't believe it has been three years since I last wrote this blog. I was a little cross with myself for giving up, but once Molly came home, I just wasn't in the right place and didn't have the time to do it. But now I'd like to update it...for at least a month. Three years of being at home feels like a huge milestone and I'd like to celebrate it through Molly's blog. I've also just re-read the subtitle...and at the moment this... Continue reading

How proud is Ben of his little sister?!? This was Ben's first cuddle. I'm so happy. :-) There will be lots of pictures of the two of them together, so I apologise now, but I am allowed as I am so excited!!! We were moved into our own room today. To cut a long story short, the girl next to us develped a cold and I couldn't take the risk that Molly might catch it. So we ended up in our own room, which was lovely and meant that when Ben came, everything was much more relaxed. Not much to... Continue reading

I said to Ben tonight: 'You only love me for my tv!' 'Yep,' he replied (without a trace of irony!) and hopped on the bed to put the headphones on. Hmmm....! Another good day for me and Mols. Apart from her weight gain...or loss to be precise. She has lost 10g since wednesday morning. However, everyone is very pleased with this. If you bear in mind that previously she was able to feed without doing anything, we only gave her the hindmilk and she was having fortifier, whereas now she needs to actually suck and swallow and she has unfortified... Molly's first manicure! I was having a chat with one of the nurses, as Molly's nails have grown so long and sharp, she has scratched herself in the eye and made it sore. The nurse at first suggested scratch mitts, as you shouldn't cut a baby's nails before 6 weeks apparently as it can damage the cuticle. (I never knew that - I'm sure we did Ben's nails sooner than that and his fingers are fine!) But then we all laughed as she realised Molly is almost 15 weeks old! And they don't make small enough scratch mitts...even the prem... Continue reading

A slightly squinty, but very happy looking Daddy giving Molly her first bath on TCU (for one reason or another she hadn't had one since before her surgery!) So Mummy and Molly survived their first night together. The nurse still couldn't get any aspirate back at 5.30am and Molly wouldn't wake for a feed either. So I said to just leave her for a couple of hours as I felt she was exhausted after feeding so much. Molly was obviously hungry and wouldn't settle in her cot, but was just too tired to feed properly. So I propped myself up... Continue reading

So...Molly's last day in the Neonatal Unit. Wow. I wnt in to do her early feed and agreed with the nurses that we would be back for her early evening feed once I had tucked Ben up in bed (as he would be without me at home for a while) and we would take Molly round to TCU. We thought we'd better take some last photos of us in HDU... And then we went off to Mothercare to but the mattress for the Moses basket we didn't think we would need for a while! Whilst we there we had a... Continue reading

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! I was a bit late leaving for the hospital this morning, so I asked Dunc to ring them when I left to let them know I would be there for Molly's 8am feed. When I got there, Molly is still in HDU but as I was washing my hands the nurse asked me if I had spoken to Dunc. I said no, as I had only just left the house. I obviously looked pretty concerned. 'I spoke to him just before you got here and there's nothing wrong,' she said. 'We just wondered if you... Continue reading

Molly has had another good day and two fab breastfeeds. Really not much to report, except her hot cot is on 34 degrees...she may have the thermostat turned off soon! Look how big she is getting: Very happy Daddy! Well done Mols! We love you soooooooo much.xxx Continue reading

Sleepy Molly! That's kind of been the theme of today - no trick or treating for Mols tonight! She has been a good girl and has even woken up for two very good breastfeeds. She seems to be getting over her op very well and apart from the fact that she has quite red eyes at times and has to have regular eye drops, she seems fine. She is still in HDU as the nursery is full. But the best, best, best news is that...wait for it...MOLLY IS NOW IN A HOT COT!!!!!! HURRAH!!!!!!! It does mean that her teddy... Continue reading

Today was a more difficult day. Molly came off the ventilator, but has had to go into an incubator with some oxygen for a while. She's only at 22/23% but it feels like such a huge step back. Never mind, chin up. At least the surgery went well. That's the important thing. Molly just needs time to rest and get over her op. At least I got a cuddle this evening. Molly obviously liked it as her sats shot up and I liked it too.And look at Molly holding Daddy's hand...how tiny, but how much has she grown?!? Click here... Continue reading

My birthday! I had a lovely day at home doing random things like making curtain tie backs for the nursery and putting the furniture together in Molly's room. Thanks for all the lovely birthday messages and good wishes. I went in to see Molly about 5pm for her 5.30pm feed. She was fine and nice and alert. I got her out and she had a very good breastfeed. (Unsurprising really as she was not fed for 24 hours!) I gave her a full top up too, as she has only managed to gain 2g since weds. Again, not surprising! She... Continue reading

Please excuse the terrible photo of me - I didn't sleep particularly well - hence the glasses and generally unkempt appearance! And Mols doesn't look much better either! But how enormous does she look in this photo?!? I can hold her on my shoulder like a real baby! And the even better news is that she weighs 1609g now (3lb 8oz)!!! She had the best breastfeed ever this morning - sucking for almost 45 minutes! She had a full top up and was STILL hungry! Bless her. Oh well, good job she enjoyed it - it's the last one she... Molly does sleeping! She has had a very good day. She has been really alert and active and has fed very well. Becki is looking after Molly today. She had to spend some time this morning getting the room ready for Molly's op tomorrow. Luckily, Molly does not have to go back to Birmingham, she can be treated on the unit. However, because it is laser surgery, they need complete darkness. So Becki had to stick black bin liners all over the windows in the side room they will use for the op. Unbelievably high tech! You would have thought... Continue reading

My photography is getting worse! Busy day today. Molly was weighed and is 1548g Iam so pleased with her progress. After her morning feed, I came home to help Dunc with Molly's room painting as it is half term and I have him working hard! Monday is eye test day, so the opthamologist came just after lunch. I was there and held Molly's head to keep it still for the test. Becki, her nurse for today, was there too and she is so funny, she kept making me laugh. Unfortunately the ROP has got worse in the one eye, so... Continue reading

36 weeks today! Molly is so tucked up, that this is about all we saw of her this morning! She's doing great. Ben and I came in just before 8am to do her morning feed. Ben was such a good boy. We wanted to give Dunc a lie in, so we tried to creep out of the house. I say tried - Ben decided to shout down the stairs just before we left and I'm surprisedthe house didn't shake, but never mind! He was such a good boy, though and just played in the corner while was doing Molly's care... Continue reading

Molly is doing very well again today. Lots of visitors cam to say hi this evening. Jennie came and it was the first time she had met Molly. We owe such a lot to Jennie and I am so honoured she came to see us. Alongside the fact that she just takes the time to listen to me and offers advice, I am convinced her treatments helped Molly stay put for those last few days. She is wonderful and I would highly recommend her services to anyone who would like to try Reflexology or Acupuncture. Thanks Jennie for all your... Continue reading

Molly is still in her incubator. Apparently her weight gain is only 'pretty good' so they want to wait until at least monday to see if it improves. Pretty good?!? She has put on over 200g in a week! That's an increas of over 16% of her body weight. Oh well, I'm impressed, Mols, even if noone else is. We're loving being in a side room. It's fab to have some privacy. I turn the lights down and Mols and I just sit cuddling in the semi darkness for ages. But she's doing very well. Her breastfeeding is improving every... Continue reading

Well that's what Mols thinks of having her picture taken! Molly's blood transfusion went very well. She looks just like a little Ribena berry! Bless her. And she weighs... 1369g (that's just over 3lb!) This is a very big deal!!! Admittedly 21g of this is probably blood - but even so!!! Mols was well enough today to be moved back to the nursery, but another baby had pinched her spot in the night, so Mols was put in a side room. We trotted up the corridor and took all her stuff. It was only when I took her out of... Continue reading

Well, wednesday is blood test day and Molly is fine, except her hb levels are pretty low - just 7.2, so she is to have a blood transfusion. They have been low for a while, but the Drs don't like to transfuse once the baby is getting a little bit bigger, as low hb levels encourage the body to produce it's own red blood cells. However, Molly is still just a little bit too little for this to work yet, so she needs a transfusion of 21 ml. The nurses rang to see if they could get it arranged for... Continue reading

Again, Molly is doing very well. She is taking two breastfeeds a day and seeming to really enjoy them. She waves her little arms around!! After I went to see Molly this morning I went to Stourbridge to pick up a new steriliser for Molly that I got for £2.50 on ebay. Bargain! And it's in beautiful condition. Fab. And as I was up that way it seemed rude not to go and say hi to Merry Hill. I only managed to get as far as Mothercare before I had t get back to express, but got some very cute... Continue reading
