"I'm so 3008 /
You so 2000 and late /
I got that boom, boom, boom /
That future boom, boom, boom"
-Black Eyed Peas, "Boom Boom Pow"
Ugh. How many times can you say "boom"? And 3008 is a little too far in the future to be believable.
The Worst Lyric of 2009
For my money, this dubious honor belongs to Five For Fighting for the first song on their new album Slice (also called "Slice"). Behold: "Have you ready my blog today/300 million little USAs" Amazon.com Widgets Honestly, I've never really liked this band, but, BARF! Really? Really?? You'r...
We're working on the MP3! Stay tuned.
Best Music of October 2009: Kundalini Meditation Music
Amazon.com Widgets Sometimes, when the world feels like it's too much, you need to stop, breathe, and find a way to regroup. There are many forms of rejuvenation--I've always found mine in yoga, martial arts, or meditation. And I've increasingly found that the right music soothes my frayed...
Herbie Hancock, 69
Eric Clapton, 64
Tina Turner, 69
Tina definitely seems much younger than her 69 years!
Touring: Not for the Faint of Heart
Leonard Cohen gave fans a scare Saturday night when he crumpled into a heap onstage in Spain following a stoic performance of "Bird on the Wire" (see video below). Cohen's publicist has since reported that he was battling a tough case of food poisoning, and music lovers everywhere are relieved...
Kukla--yes, pertinent and funny! I had the same reaction as the video host, although I have to admit that "I Gotta Feeling" does have an annoyingly catchy melody. Now I can't get it out of my head.
Johnny--so, the mystery continues. Why do people love this album?!
Black Eyed Peas Set Record: Really?
According to this Associated Press article, the Black Eyed Peas have just made history--Billboard history, that is. Fueled by the success of their singles "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling," (both off their newest album The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies) the Peas have set a record for the ...
Love the interview, Hugo! What strikes me is how genuine CM seems--he answers your questions in a very thoughtful manner.
An Interview with Chris Martin
"Coldplay, currently on tour...." That statement will probably be accurate for the next few years,as the band seems to be on the road permanently. In the early stages of the Viva La Vida tour, after postponements for illness, permission for music etc., we got a slot to speak with the famed front...
Awesome review in just a few lines. Almost feel like I was there!
Heaven and Hell/Neurosis - WaMu Theater, Seattle - 8/8/09
Short and concise review: Neurosis took the stage, rocked my face off, then put it back on slightly askew. Heaven and Hell followed, and Dio cemented my face back on with dragon's blood, while Tony Iommi stitched it in place with what are still the most impeccable guitar riffs ever created....
Nathan- thanks for the kind words! I love your description of the music as "organic" and "earthen." Since throat singing is so heavily influenced by the earth and the environment, you picked the perfect way to describe it.
Stas, Ben, and Amy- thanks for the awesome suggestions! I'll definitely check out "Deep in the Heart of Tuva" and "Genghis Blues." Keep the suggestions coming!
Hugo - ah, so that's why you're so good at throat singing! I'm impressed. ;)
World Music Wednesday: Tuvan Throat Singing
August is an exciting month here at ChordStrike. We’re set to launch both our World Music Event and our editors’ picks for the 100 Greatest World Music Albums of All Time in the next few weeks. In honor of these internationally-themed occasions (and frankly because I’ll use any excuse to blog ...
I've heard "Say Say Say" countless times, but I hadn't actually seen the music video. I decided to post the vid since 1) "Say Say Say" isn't as well known as "The Girl Is Mine," 2) the vid features cameos by Linda McCartney, La Toya Jackson, and Mr. T (interesting), and 3) it's plain fun to watch.
Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney Music Video
I've had both the Beatles and Michael Jackson on the brain lately, so I thought I'd see if I could dig up any related video content. I ended up finding the music video for Say Say Say, a duet between Jackson and Paul McCartney. It's thoroughly entertaining--check it out below. Click here...
I think Sarah Jarosz is a revelation. I can hardly believe she's just 18--her music is amazing, and she knocks her cover of the Decemberists' "Shankill Butchers" out of the park. Great post!

Thanks for turning me on to "Birth of a Fish"! I was so intrigued by your description that I had to look up the lyrics. What a surprise--metaphysics cloaked in hip-hop! Reminded me of Plato's cave allegory. Interesting food for thought and wicked beats to boot!
Eyedea & Abilities Got You "By the Throat"
Battle-trained and road-tested, the Minneapolis-based hip-hop duo of (emcee) Eyedea and (deejay) Abilities have announced the upcoming release of their first album in five years. Entitled By the Throat, the new joint is sure to feature more of what the pair is known for: Abilities' envy-induci...
It's cool how Kristin Hersh's music impacted your perspective on the gentleman you encountered. Your story reminds me anew of how music characterizes different experiences in our lives...thanks for sharing!
My Professor - Kristin Hersh
Just about every morning, I walk to work, coffee in hand, partly through an area called Freeway Park, usually with my MP3 player on shuffle. Today while walking down some steps, I saw a gentleman navigating the steps backwards. As I kept walking and watching him, he looked up at me and started...
Dent May! Indie rocker with mean ukulele skills? There's no question.
Elton John vs. Warren Zevon vs. Dent May: Who Wore it Best?
I've recently happened upon what appears to be a decades-spanning rock 'n' roll fashion triumvirate and thought I'd throw the photo evidence out to Chordstrike readers for a vote. Who do you think wore this look best? Was it eccentric, piano-man Elton John, “satiric songwriter” Warren Zevon, or ...
