Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment in the colorful Okefenokee Swamp, I’m Brian Fies. This is the second half of a testimonial I originally wrote in 2012 upon the retirement of the comic strip Cul de Sac due to its creator Richard Thompson’s Parkinson’s disease. As I... Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment at the pedagogical Blisshaven Academy, I’m Brian Fies. Today and tomorrow’s CSOTDs are a light edit of something I wrote for my own blog nearly four years ago, when the comic strip Cul de Sac closed up shop because Parkinson’s disease... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment in dismal Lower Slobbovia, I’m Brian Fies. The comics industry held its Eisner Award ceremony at the San Diego Comic-Con last night. My friends who authored the Graphic Medicine Manifesto lost, as did the luminous Carol Tyler for her excellent Soldier’s... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment to the prehistoric kingdom of Moo, I’m Brian Fies. Comic-Con International is happening in San Diego this weekend without me. I’ve been several times (I took the photo above last year), the event is run by nice people who’ve been very... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment to the surprisingly hectic Lost Forest National Forest, I’m Brian Fies. Many pre-Internet years ago, in an effort to better understand how comics work, I did an experiment whose results surprised me. Like most people who read comic strips in a... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment to the mysterious Misty Isles, I’m Brian Fies. When I began my temporary stewardship of the Comic Strip of the Day, I said that I don't do politics on the Internet. It just makes people mad and never changes anybody's mind.... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment driving La Cometa Halley through Oaxaca, I’m Brian Fies. Why "Planck Length?" Because a regular feature of "Comic Strip of the Day" is Mike's "Short Takes" commentary on strips that struck his fancy. Today's comments will be even shorter than short.... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment to tranquil Santa Royale, California, I’m Brian Fies. Today's Bizarro by Dan Piraro spoke to me because this is pretty much how I spent my weekend. My brother-in-law Marc came to town, and when he does I always try to have... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment in the trackless jungles of Bangalla, I’m Brian Fies. This weekend: an extended (long!) interview with Alexis Fajardo and Justin Thompson, two cartoonists whose comic strips appear on GoComics.com. They also work together at Creative Associates, the studio that manages Charles... Continue reading

Friday afternoon, CSOTD CEO Mike Peterson left a comment on my post of July 12. He wrote: "First time on line since Tuesday and little energy but if it goes south it likely won't be for a while. Could be a while before I feel too blabby." I figured few... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment in picturesque Mtigwaki, Ontario, I’m Brian Fies. Today I'm spotlighting three comic strips I liked and explaining why I liked 'em. It doesn't get simpler than that. In one sense, Zits is the sort of family strip that's been in the... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment to the rogue planet Mongo, I’m Brian Fies. Sometimes you start writing about one thing and it leads you right down an unexpected rabbit hole to a place you never meant to go. This is one of those days. Syndicated since... Continue reading

Filling in for Mike Peterson while he’s on assignment in colorful Coconino County, Arizona, I’m Brian Fies. Daily Doonesburys have been reruns since February 2014, when Garry Trudeau went to work on his Amazon streaming comedy “Alpha House” (never seen it; is it good?). At the time, Trudeau told Washington... Continue reading

I’m Brian Fies, your CSOTD guest host (see below for Mike Peterson's note explaining why). When I volunteered to fill in, I told Mike I had two goals: keep the lights on, and return his toys in the condition he left them. His Prime Directive is also mine: no snark... Continue reading

Wil, I love you like the little brother I never had and you once patiently spent a few minutes talking to me at Comic-Con when you clearly had other places to go, but I've never posted before and only signed up now to let you know that the man's name is spelled "Shimerman." Because it makes writers sad to publish a mistake like that and find out too late to fix it.
