A post from our Travel Journal at Fuzzy Travel.... We returned from Italy barely 3 months ago but we are already beginning to show signs of Italy withdrawal. Luigi (aka SaltairDigital) has been torturing me with his newly produced videos of our favourite spot in Tuscany - Agriturismo Poggio Asciutto. It just makes me want to go back...NOW! Here's a link to the Poggio Asciutto video: Oh, while I am at is a link to Luigi's video of the Cat Sanctuary in Rome: In the meantime...I am going to post Eva's Schiacciata con l'uva recipe. I asked... Continue reading

I've won a prize. Well, it's really not a prize cuz there really was no contest but I have "awarded" myself the distinction of "The World's Worst Packer". Imagine, being in Italy for 4 plus weeks, lugging a heavy suitcase around that contains...TaDaTaDaaaaaa...two useful items of clothing out of, well, lots. The weather was hot, not unseasonably hot since it was only September so why...why? I pack cold weather stuff? I am still shaking my sunburned head in disbelief. Before we left, when I was in the "what do I pack" stage, I "googled" "What to wear in Italy". I... Continue reading

"You're giving them WHAT?" "Fibre 1 bars?" "You must be kidding!" was my reaction last October 31st when I called home to see how Luigi was managing Halloween night alone. I had just returned to my daughter's house after an evening of trick-or-treating with my grandsons and decided to get the scoop on the events at home, a province away. Who, in the world, gives a fibre bar to kids on Halloween? They want good stuff..the more sugar, the better. Somehow, I just can't picture them pulling the "bar" out of their treat bag and exclaiming "Wow, cool, I'm gonna... Continue reading

I should be so lucky. I am packing for FOUR weeks in Italy but I have a problem. I love Italy, at least what I saw of it on our last (my first) trip there barely sixteen months ago. I do, however, hate pictures of me, the tourist, in italy. Sheesh. Baggy tourist pants, one-size-fits-all sailing club vest, extremely identifiable hiking slash running shoes and zellers over-the-shoulder-tourist-bag. No wonder I sensed strange Italian-like stares! Having said all that, I have not learned. I am wearing the SAME baggy pants (because they are comfortable and my best travel pants) but I... Continue reading

Long time – no post. Forgive me, but I have just spent a week away getting my fix. Friends and Family Fix. Ever since we moved from Edmonton to Vancouver Island last July I have had a love affair with Westjet and/or Air Canada. Thanks to airmiles (and about a zillion years of hoarding them) I was able to fly to Alberta to get my family “fix”. It was exhaustingly fun. I felt like I was in training for the Grandma-thon. Race to power skating, hockey games, pick up kids, drop off kids, squeeze in dentist, doctor and candlestick maker... Continue reading

Gerda, Thank you. I love Marlena de Blasi's books which, I believe, have financed a luxurious life in Italy...sigh. I bet she has no problem finding good pancetta and lasagna noodles! Hey!...back to writing...

I want to go to Grandma school….no…not GRAMMAR school (I need that too, but it’s too boring)…I mean a school for grandmas to learn the art of grandma-ing. Okay, I know I am a good grandma and I was an okay mother but there is always room for improvement even at being a grandma (or is there?). I want to be the best grandma possible. I did not have time to go to Mom school, I was too busy just being a Mom….an okay mom, but hey now that I have the time, why not? To be honest, I don’t... Continue reading

One of the first things I learned from Luigi about sailing is that if there are two sailboats in the water, it's always a race. Not really an official race, just two skippers flexing their sails so to speak. I wanted the real thing. A real sailing race, with a real starting point and real finish line. We found the perfect one. A race to a pub! It "whet" my appetite for more and I can't wait until the next race season starts. Here is a little taste of the Race to the Pub. MY FIRST RACE!! I did it…finally!... Continue reading

As I write this, I am sitting on the sailboat anchored at Genoa Bay Marina, feeling a little philosophical about friends and how they come and go from ones' life. What prompted this? Let me try to give you a snapshot of our afternoon. We were sitting on the little patio at the marina snacking on our sandwiches when I noticed a couple in kayaks paddling towards us. One red and one green kayak. You say, so? Well, I won't bore you with the details, but I had found out just a few days ago that neighbours (and friends) from... Continue reading

I recently sat down and tried to capture the feelings I felt as I walked through my husband’s birthplace, Rome, Italy. I am envious, partly because it is so romantic, never mind a location where thousands of tourists flock to each year, but also because in many ways it is so “preserved”. It is sacred. Its history is honoured. Mine, on the other hand is not. I grew up in a nice safe (at the time) middle class neighbourhood in southern California, that has evolved over the years into something different. Besides, it is a far cry from the enchanting... I caught crabs….my husband caught crabs too. We even shared them with our friends. Do you wanna know how we got them? You DO cuz they were big suckers and when you tear their legs off and boil them up they are lip smackin’ good. We loved catching them almost as much as tearing them apart and eating them. Right now I bet you’re thinking “These Island people are weird” I admit…it took a few tries before we caught crabs. This is what we caught first. It is not a crab, it is a mother of a starfish and as... Continue reading

Albert Einstein and I have something in common. C’mon did you say high IQ? I wish. Shyness. Lucille Ball, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt too, or so I have read. I am a funny, witty, and clever writer in a shy 54 year old body just ‘struggling’ to break out of this self imposed jail. My new husband is my co-conspirator in my jail break sort of like the visitor with the file in the cake. I have other co-conspirators too. Daughters, girlfriends and even a new found writer friend who calls me “Ms. Struggle”. Despite my shyness I have led... Continue reading
