It's finally beginning to feel like spring here in the Midwest, so I thought I'd give ya a little peek of the West Center store as you walk in the door .... Oh, and just a heads-up. I know I probably don't have to tell you but we'll be closed Easter Sunday to enjoy the day with our families. My family and I are going out for Easter brunch and baby Charlotte will get to see the Easter Bunny for the first time. I can't wait!! :) Continue reading

If you've been in the shops and picked up the spring newsletter, you've probably read that we have a new block of the month -- and it starts next week!! This is "Sunday Ride" isn't it gor-ge-ous??!! It measures 68" by 86" and it's a wonderful spring and summer quilt. Ann Lage made both of our models and she did a fantastic job!! The original quilt (and ours) was stitched using the fusible applique method with a small machine buttonhole stitch, but you can use the applique technique of your choice. Seeww, here's the skinny in a nutshell -- "Sunday... Continue reading

I finally got time to add a few of our most current quilt kits to our website this week. They come and go pretty quickly, so be sure and check these beauties out! "Triple Treat" is the first up! This quilt is from the Happy Hour book and is easy to make and such a happy quilt! (72 1/2" by 87") From the Papillion shop, this great quilt called "In the Woods". The kit includes the pattern and kit, but you can buy just the pattern too! Quilt measures 55" x 55". This is "Scrappy Nines", from one of our... Continue reading

I finally got my quilt done to help announce the Country Sampler Red and White Quilt Show here at both the shops in May, and it's in a little display Carol and I put together by the back cutting table ... Mine is the primarily red quilt on the left hand side .... It's called "Croquet" and it's from this great book by Betsy Chutchian... (I love this book, by the way.) The original quilt was done in kind of muslin color for the chain and then the main fabric was a kind of soft cheddar color. Luckily, the design... Continue reading

We always look forward to a new Nancy Halverson book here at Country Sampler. We just received her newest - Table Please 2 ... It's full of runners and table toppers for Fall, Halloween, Christmas and Winter - all in that wonderful Art to Heart style. Looks great doesn't it?! We also have Nancy's first book in the series (in the shops and on the website) - Table Please Part 1 ... So whether you want to get a head start on the fall and winter holidays or are thinking about making a little sumpin' for this season ... we've... Continue reading

Gosh, I wish that picture was better. Trust me, Edith, it's really beautiful! Here's a little better close up ... Stop by either store and check it out! Yummy!! Continue reading

If you've been following along in the Country Sampler newsletter, you know we're planning a Red and White Quilt Show for May 10th through the 25th and we're asking our friends and customers to stitch up a red and white quilt to put in the show. Have you started yours yet? Quilts are due into either one of the two shops on April 21st through the 30th, so you need to get hopping on that quilt! The good news is that it doesn't have to be a king size Baltimore Album quilt (like that would ever get done at my... Continue reading

Anybody out there?? Geez, it seems like forever since I last posted a note to ya. For a while I was writing the Spring Country Sampler newsletter... which, by the way, is out in the stores now. It'll be awhile 'til it's on the website though, so stop by the shops and pick up a copy. Since I changed website hosting companies I have to figure out how to get it on the web, so that's one of my jobs for next week. Then ... we took a little vacation to Florida. It was sooo great to get out of... Continue reading

I feel I've been remiss as a new Grandma for not sharing a few pictures of my new (and first!) granddaughter ... Charlotte. Many of you have been so kind in asking about her, so I wanted to share a couple of pictures of her. This is Charlotte in her Christmas dress that Grandpa and I bought for her ... Pretty dang cute, huh? Of course, everyone who held her at little gold sparkles all over them that day. In addition, I had to buy her a Christmas Eve outfit too - a little more casual for the well dressed... Continue reading

Since it's February I thought I'd show you a few pictures of the West Center store decked out in a little red, pink, and white to celebrate the season .... We've also got a couple of new models and their kits this month! First up, "Twist and Spin" .... Don't 'cha just love it?! Carla made the sample for it, then we quilted it with a small meandering stitch, and then washed it. Along with the fabric choices, this really gives it a vintage look AND ... we've got kits for it too! (I didn't put this one on the... Continue reading

I thought I'd share some pictures of our staff party from last Sunday. This year we didn't do a Christmas party in December - sometimes it just seems like that month is too hectic to add one party to the mix. So instead I suggested we do a "Favorite Things Party" at my house in January. What's a favorite things party, you ask?? I saw the idea on a blog a couple of years ago and I've kept it in the back of my mind, waiting for the perfect opportunity. The concept of the party is like Oprah's Favorite Things... I was looking over my blog post from yesterday and realized I didn't talk to ya about one more new model we've got made up in the shop. You might not have noticed it on the table it in this picture ... but it's so nifty I wanted to be sure and point it out to you. It's "Hot Stuff" a casserole cover pattern from Atkinson Designs that will help you show up in style to your next potluck or family get together - and trust me, I need all the help I can get! The pattern features two sizes... Continue reading

Transforming the shops from the holidays is a big job but it's coming along great. Although I love Christmas and all that goes with it, it's so refreshing to have new quilts go up! Some of them are lighter and brighter to reflect the (hopefully) coming of spring. I know, I know ... it seems like that's a long way off, but we can always use a little lift in January and February, don't cha think? Virginia, at the West Center store, made this beauty for us .... Isn't it fun? The pattern is called Tiny Dancer and she made... Continue reading

I think I'm almost ready to start the new year. I know it's the middle of January, but the year doesn't seem to be over for me until we get past Fat Quarter Frenzy and inventory. If you've never been part of a yearly inventory for a quilt shop - not to mention two of them - it's a full day, all-hands-on-deck, lifting every bolt in the shop and weighing them, procedure. That doesn't even take in to account that we have to inventory every pattern, book, spool of thread, fat quarter, half yard, notion, stencil, skein of embroidery thread,... Continue reading

The holidays are over, the new year is upon is, but I guess the old saying ... "there's no rest for the wicked" must be true, 'cause we're still in high gear here at Country Sampler 1 and 2. We've been cutting fat quarters like crazy the last week or two getting ready for Fat Quarter Frenzy this weekend!! Yup, little Country Sampler buddies, we'll have thousands of precut fat quarters (and several hundred half yard cuts that count as two fat quarters!) in our classrooms. If you've joined us before for FQF, you know the rules! It's 20 fat... Continue reading

Some of you may know that every year on New Year's Day I start a new quilt project - even if I have several other projects going (and I always do), New Year's Day is a day to start something new for the new year. It's my own little tradition. And I think I've found my quilt for this year - yea! It's from this book ... I do love this book. It's got tons of great projects in it, but I was looking for a something to highlight our upcoming "Red and White Quilt Show" in May. I think... Continue reading

A little note to wish you a Merry Christmas!! I can't believe it's here already. I'm writing this on Christmas Eve day and I still have to clean the house, wrap two presents, make a loaf of Christmas bread for tomorrow morning, and run out for a couple of small stocking stuffers. I think this is how most of us feel about this time, I know I do! I love Christmas but it's a lot of work, isn't it?? Just a reminder -- Country Sampler 1 and 2 will be open on the 26th at 10:00 for our After Christmas... Continue reading

Did you have a good Thanksgiving? Ours was very nice, this was our first year with baby Charlotte who slept through the event until it was time for pie. (Does this baby know what's important at Thanksgiving, or what??!) She ate, had a diaper change, then we passed her around so everyone got to hold her, and then she went back to slept - she's got a pretty limited repertoire at one month of age! I wanted to thank everyone who came out to see us for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday last weekend -- MANY THANKS! We know... Continue reading

If you're like me, I can't really get into stitching for Christmas until after Halloween. I always have the best intentions and I do have to do models for Christmas in July, but the real work of making gifts for friends and family always seems to start in November once we're past the ghoulies and ghosties. Here's a couple of quick and easy projects that won't break the bank, are easy to do, and so perfect for the holidays! First up, isn't this snowman runner sweet? Here's a little close up of the bottom ... Can you tell those little... Continue reading

Three of us at the West Center Store are going to be Grandmas ... well, I guess one of us already is! Kim just found out it's going to be a boy, so now she can get busy. Lorie and I had already made the little ones their quilts. Here's what I made for baby Charlotte ... It was from this this book .... Lori doesn't know if they're having a boy or a girl so she stitched up this beauty, "Remember Whooo Loves You" .... Isn't it wonderful in brights?? I also put a little basket together for Charlotte... Continue reading

Ann and I just got back from Quilt Market and as always, it was a whirlwind of fabric, new notions, patterns, block of the months, wool, new patterns and books. We saw everything and bought our share (and probably somebody else's share - ha!). I'll share the new stuff with you in upcoming blog posts... but I've some BIG news to share with now!! Look what I got to come home to!! Yup, it's my first grandbaby - born the last day of Quilt Market, October 28th, 2013. A baby girl, a healthy 9 lbs. - 7 oz.! Of the... Continue reading
