By now, everyone knows the story of Sarah Huckabee Sanders being asked to leave a Red Hen restaurant after several gay employees objected to her presence. I've got no problem with that decision, and it's a little dumbfounding to see how many people are wringing their hands that this action was too "uncivil." Let the shaming continue. (pic via abcnews.go.com) Folks, this country is under attack. By all indications, the current occupant of the White House has either been bought and paid for, or he's being blackmailed, by Russia. Either way, it's reasonable believe he legitimately doesn't have our national... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! How are you? It looks like we got another round of rain last night which is good for the garden. I thought it was supposed to rain until this afternoon, but the sun's already out, which means BDH, Little Buddha, and I can get an earlier start on today's to-do list. The birds are chirping pretty loudly this morning. BDH says they're asking if we remembered to make the coffee. Have no fear, friends. There's a fresh pot sitting on the counter, so help yourself to a nice medium DD, and let's clear out some Monday... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! Come on in, have a seat. How are you? I'm happy that the garden got a good soaking yesterday. My guess is that we're about one more week (and one more watering) away from the flowers really being ready to pop. That would be a nice way to start off July. (Wait, how is it already almost July?) The forecast called rain for most of the day today, but now it doesn't sound like it's supposed to start until mid-afternoon. It will be nice if I can squeeze in a bike ride before that starts, but... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back, and a happy Friday to you all! This week flew by in a hurry. Do you have any big plans for the weekend? BDH and Little Buddha picked up two new books and they're taking turns reading the first one, so I expect that to keep them busy for a while. The second one is a little longer, so I might need to help them with it. I see rain in the forecast over the next couple of days, so that might be our main activity while the Clutter Tree and garden hopefully get a good... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! How are you? Happy first day of summer! BDH and Little Buddha were just telling me about their dreams last night. Apparently they were friends with our local birds who gave them the scoop about everything and everyone in the neighborhood. They also told them that the Clutter Tree was their most favorite tree in the area, and really, who could disagree with that? I don't remember my dreams, but I don't think they were as much fun. Anyway, the guys also made you some coffee, so help yourself to a nice medium DD, and let's... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! Come on in, have a seat. How are you? I learned something important yesterday: It's much easier to water your garden when you're not dodging falling tree limbs. Who knew? The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the coffee is ready. Grab yourself a nice medium DD, and let's clear out some Wednesday Clutter. The United States is leaving the UN Human Rights Council. The Trump administration says it has something to do with political corruption, and the body being "anti-Israel." It certainly can't be the fact that the U.S. is committing human rights... Continue reading

I realized after his recent death that I've never read any of Anthony Bourdain's books. The late chef/TV host was a captivating presence any time I'd seen him on television, but not being a "foodee" per se, I'd assumed these books would not be for me. However, it's always good to challenge assumptions, so I went to the local library and checked out Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook. Published in 2010, Medium Raw is the follow-up to Kitchen Confidential, the book which launched Bourdain into super-stardom. It's a collection of... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! How are you? We had an adventure while watering the garden last night. I knew thunderstorms were in the forecast, but the plants were very dry, and I couldn't take the chance that the rain wouldn't come. I got about halfway through, when it started getting dark quickly. "I'll just keep going until the rain actually starts," I thought. Next thing I know, the wind is howling, and small branches from nearby trees are littering the yard and driveway. I looked up and watched a huge limb come crashing off one of the trees, landing just... Continue reading

We need something to take our mind off all the awful news in the world for a few minutes. We also need something to distract us from the fact that it's a sauna in here at the moment. What we need is a clip of Guns N' Roses and Foo Fighters teaming up on the classic tune, "It's So Easy," at the 2018 Firenze Rocks festival in Milan, Italy. It's a perfect pairing, as Dave Grohl and company jam away with Slash and Duff McKagan, while Axl Rose is in peak sleazy/threatening form on the vocals. The result is 4:02... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! Come on in, have a seat. How are you? We were just looking outside and wondering if it's going to rain or just stay cloudy all day. The guys think the birds are chirping about it just being cloudy. Looks like I'll be watering the garden later. That is, after we make it through the heat. Highs in the 90's with humidity? Yikes. Oh well, we'll deal with that when it gets here. For now, let's see what's going on in the world. BDH and Little Buddha just brought in the coffee, so help yourself to... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! How are you? The birds are chirping up a storm. They've been at it since sometime around 4:30 this morning. I would have been annoyed, but BDH and Little Buddha think they're talking about the new flowers we have in the garden, so I guess I can't be too cranky about that. Before we go any further, we want to wish all of the dads out there (especially Dad Clutter) a very happy Father's Day! For those who find the day challenging for whatever reason, we're thinking of you, and we hope you do something good... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! Come on in, have a seat. BDH and Little Buddha were just looking around to see if there are any birds in the neighborhood this morning, but it's pretty quiet right now. Looks like we're going to get some rain soon, which would be good for the Clutter Tree. The coffee is ready, so help yourself to a nice medium DD, and let's clear out some Friday Clutter. The last thing we want to do around here is rush summer in any way. The sun is shining, the plants are growing, and any day we can wear shorts is a good day. However, the most appealing aspect of the fall is the return of Doctor Who. It seems like it has been several lifetimes since Peter Capaldi said goodbye last Christmas. We've tried not to think about it, because the new season is still a few months away. However, now comes news that new star Jodie Whittaker and several of her co-stars, along with new showrunner Chris Chibnall,... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! Come on in, have a seat. How are you? I went to sleep too late last night and woke up too early this morning, so we're moving a little slowly around here at the moment. BDH and Little Buddha promised to make today's coffee extra strong, and if that doesn't work, they say we can schedule a nap time later this afternoon. Also, as you may have noticed, there's a period of about 10 minutes in the morning where the sun bounces off a window across the way and lights up this room, so that's adding... Continue reading

One of the items on this summer's to-do list was to check out David Letterman's new show on Netflix, called My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. We've missed seeing Letterman on TV since his retirement in 2014, and it was intriguing to hear that he was returning in a format that featured just one guest in an hour without commercial interruptions. There were six episodes in this first season, so the question then became, which guest should we watch? The answer was simple: Howard Stern. We listened to Stern "back in the day" when he was still... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! How's your week going? No real complaints on this end. We were supposed to be getting some rain this afternoon, but now it looks like the forecast just calls for some clouds. Hmm. The garden could always use another good soaking, but I'll do it myself in a few days if the rain holds off. Anyway, let's check out today's headlines. The guys made some coffee, so help yourself to a nice medium DD, because it's time to clear out some Wednesday Clutter. As far as we can tell, Donald Trump got nothing out of the... Continue reading

We just read story a story about Country Time Lemonade offering to cover the fines of kids whose lemonade stands were busted because they didn't have the proper permits. Our first thought was that it had to be a joke, but apparently it's legit. Shame on any bureaucrat who wastes a single taxpayer dollar doing this. Friends, here's a quick and easy tip to a happier life: Always buy lemonade from a kid whenever you get the chance. Trust us, you win every time. Hi everyone, Welcome back! Come on in, have a seat. Looks like it's going to be another beautiful day. The birds are chirping up a storm this morning. BDH and Little Buddha say they're talking about what a good job I did watering the garden yesterday. I'm not sure the two of them are translating that correctly, but they insist that's what all of the noise is about. They're the ones studying the bird calls, so I guess I have to defer to them. Anyway, we've got plenty of headlines to sort through, so let's see what's going on in... Continue reading

The recent deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain can raise all sorts of issues for people who are battling depression and/or have some type of personal experience with the subject of suicide. It's jarring, and to some extent, there's some temporary sense of comfort when these tragedies make the news. Suddenly, people around us are talking about the thing we struggle with, and there are all of these statements of support. People mean well, and it's not that they don't care. It's not that at all. However, that collective messaging fades into the distance pretty quickly as the 24-hour... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! How are you? How was your weekend? I was just out taking a quick look at the garden while the guys were making coffee. We've got a few new flowers adding some more color to the place, and a number of plants look like they're getting ready to bloom soon, so that's a nice start to the week. I clearly also need to water them, so I'll get to that later today. Before that happens, let's see what's going on in the world, as we start a new week. BDH and Little Buddha just said the... Hi everyone, Welcome back! Come on in, have a seat. How are you? The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the garden looks terrific, so everything is good on this end. BDH and Little Buddha say the reason the birds are so chatty today is to tell me that there's plenty of sun in the long-range forecast, so I will have to water the garden at some point soon. The two of them are really getting better at understanding bird-speak. They're also still fantastic at making coffee. There's a fresh pot on the counter, so help yourself to... Continue reading

Robin Williams fans will be interested to learn that HBO has a new documentary coming out about the late comedian. Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind, will debut on July 16, and the first trailer just came out. Take a look: At first glance, the documentary has the same feel as Dave Itzkoff's new biography of the man. Robin Williams was a creative genius. However, it seems like he was also always the shy kid looking to connect with others, but never able to quite find what he was looking for. This may be a sad program, but we won't... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back, and a happy Friday to you all! BDH and Little Buddha were just looking on Amazon.com for ideas for the next books they can read when they're not bird-watching. Hi everyone, Welcome back! How are you? BDH and Little Buddha were just waiting for some birds to show up in the Clutter Tree. Yesterday was a little bit of an odd day around here. It started off as a typically busy Wednesday morning, and then I found myself walking past a crime scene in the neighborhood. Turns out that an elderly man was hit and killed by a car as he was crossing the street. Very sad. A large portion of the street was blocked off, and the police were everywhere. As I walked back two hours later, they... Continue reading

Hi everyone, Welcome back! How are you? We were just listening to the birds chirping this morning.
