Hi everyone! I've resigned for another four months... while I haven't been a particularly frequent poster (especially thanks to a very busy summer of grad school work and opera tech rehearsals), I've been successfully resisting the lure of new clothes... Continue reading

I have to say, I really like having a three-day weekend and the associated bit of time to do a little refashioning! Here's what I did yesterday. It started out as this thrifted floral piece. Anyone know when this look... Continue reading

Wow, this is a terrific dress! When you said childhood bedsheet, I didn't know what to expect... this is incredibly fun. :)

This month, I'm participating in a Lite version of Me-Made May (hosted by Zoe), so I'm trying to wear at least one item of clothing made or refashioned by me every day. As this selection is still a bit small,... Continue reading

Hi everyone, I'm re-signing again! I'm Elly, and I'm a grad student in MA studying performance and technology. Also, I'm very interested in crafting/sewing/style/etc. I haven't been getting too much refashioning done recently as I've been finishing my Master's thesis,... Continue reading

I had grabbed a dress from my local dollar-a-pound thrift store seeing its awesome fabric. Red and white and what look like ginko leaves! But it turned out to look like this when I put it on at home: So... Continue reading

My boyfriend is the fountain pen collector I'd made this for. He has a number of pens he's gotten over the last few years (primarily fairly inexpensive ones), including a couple by Lamy, a couple by Pelikan, and a vintage Parker 51 that I managed to get him on Ebay for a pretty good price...

Hi everyone! So I actually resigned in January for four months, but have been pretty lax on my posting. I'm currently a graduate student working on my master's thesis, so have been rather busy. I have been doing really well... Continue reading

Ooh, I like the zig-zag stitch idea. I'd patched one worn pair by pinning denim to the inside then sewing around the patch and a few times across it, but using a zig-zag would actually capture the old threads rather than just having them loose over the new patch. Thank you!

A beautiful piece! I love the detail of putting the pretty sheet border at the bottom of the dress. Definitely makes it feel that the fabric was printed for this outfit, rather than repurposed...I'll have to look out for sheets with borders now.

Happy Independence Day weekend, for all of you from the States! This week, I took some time going through my closet and figuring out the things I've stopped wearing... then hopefully I can do something with them to make them... Continue reading

My degree will be in Media Arts and Sciences...though that's kind of a catch-all term, as there's a ton of different kinds of work being done by various research groups that are part of the program. In my research, I'm mostly working on wearable items with electronic sensors that can pick up performer gesture and use that to inform music in some way. For a concrete example, one of my recent projects just got written up at http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/06/22/maker-faire-music-vamp-and-glove-controlled-vocals/. It's not the best video (so noisy at Maker Faire!), but basically this shows a glove a singer can wear that lets her "grab," extend, and manipulate a note she sings, so she can accompany herself. It's fun stuff, if kind of crazy.
