I just had a bad experience with a potential client and I wanted to share it here. Potential clients always feel they have to be very selective who they hire. Well, it goes both ways. Successful business owners are also very selective who they work with. Spanish-4-You has a great teaching reputation. My personal teaching services by Skype are very popular to the point that I am starting to turn people down. So it is surprising when I come across someone who starts asking endless questions, with the underlying tone that they doubt my ability to make them succeed. The... Continue reading

Saturday, January 6th, is a special day in Latin America and Spain. Known as 'El Día de Reyes' (Three Kings Day), this holiday represents the height of the Christmas season and commemorates the three wise men who traveled from afar, bearing gifts for baby Jesus. The children in particular look forward to this holiday because gifts are exchanged on this date, not on Christmas day. In Puerto Rico, where I am from, they celebrate both because PR is a US territory (I am sure you have seen a lot of that in the news, after Hurricane Maria)) The three wise... Continue reading

December 21st, marked the Winter Solstice (the start of Winter) in the Northern Hemisphere. Since Fairbanks, my adopted hometown, is so far north, sunrise was at 10:58am and sunset was at 2:40pm. That means there were almost 20 hours of darkness. People are curious to know how I cope with the extreme conditions of long harsh winters. My answer is that I would rather live in perpetual darkness in frigid winters where temperatures plummet to -50 than go back to sunny Southern California. I love Alaska, the last frontier...the land of the free! Aside from offering being the owner of... Continue reading

Why we took a break... People have asked me if they were unsubscribed because they have not gotten a newsletter in more than a week. No one has been unsubscribed yet. The reason we took a break was because it felt wrong to talk about joyful things while Southern California, where most of our subscribers reside, is battling devastating fires. Some fires are still raging, as we speak. I always find teachable moments even when tragedy strikes. Since I was teaching informal commands, let's tie them with the topic/theme of natural disasters. Great teachers 1) always tie grammar with a... Continue reading

Que tengas un feliz diciembre Did you notice that I didn't capitalize 'diciembre'? Months are not capitalized in Spanish. In English, wishing someone a good day, or month is very easy: Have a happy ............... but it is super tricky in Spanish. It is normal for learners of Spanish to say: Ten un feliz diciembre or Ten un buen día. Both of those expressions use the informal command: TEN (Have). It is not technically wrong but native Spanish speaking people would never say that. They would rather say: Que tengas un feliz diciembre or Que tengas un buen día. Click... Continue reading

Spanish-4-You program incorporates Bingo games in every lesson. Thematic bingo games are a lot of fun and children always look forward to playing. The main purpose of bingo games is to assess students' understanding of the lesson vocabulary (oral and visual comprehension). If the teacher notices that students are looking over at their peers' cards that means that the vocabulary has not solidified in their brains and a quick review should be made before moving on to the next lesson. Parents and teachers can get our first lesson absolutely free and until the end of the month, they can supplement... Continue reading

Spanish-4-You donates a minimum of 3 quality backpacks through World Vision every month, so that children in 3rd World countries can have school supplies. We take school supplies for granted, but there are students so poor they can’t even afford a decent pencil. We have personally sponsored children in Mexico through World Vision since 2009. Now we can do it on a bigger scale through our company. Please take the time to let your fellow teachers know about our program. The more lessons we sell, the more backpacks we can purchase. Check out our Online Shop for Spanish lessons in... Continue reading

Zoie is one of the smartest children I have ever taught. She goes to the prestigious WNS (Westside Neighborhood School) in Los Angeles, CA where my academy, Spanish-4-You taught an 8 week after school Spanish class. She is the only kid that asks politely how I am doing after I ask her how she's doing (unbelievable). Her memory and pronunciation are fantastic. Watch the video of Zoie and other kids Spanish-4-You students: Continue reading
Today, while cleaning my computer files, I came across an article that I had saved for almost three years. It was about a renowned business coach (Dr. Gayla DeHart) commenting about an article she had read in Oprah magazine in December 2006 by David Foster Wallace. When I first read it, that little article had a profound impact on me and now that I re-read it, continues to have a huge impact. I think it is because it summarizes how I have always felt about human interaction, especially in business. Everytime I interact with a client, I think about it.... Continue reading
