A significant driving force in projects' returns and unit pricing is the look, feel and shape of the debt component. Your "Grandfather's" traditional long-term syndicated loan structure has all but disappeared as a financing instrument, maybe never to return. However, the need for long-term financing still remains; and, necessity is mother of all inventions. So where there is demand, supply will be created. A complimentary webinar, presented by leading Project Finance Advisor and Vair Training Head Instructor, Charles "Chip" Haskell, looks at the basic math surrounding changing parameters of financial instruments for project finance available to infrastructure projects and Public-Private... THE VAIR DIFFERENCE Unlike most training services, Vair is not a brokerage firm. Our Trainers are our partners and collaborators. The basis of the training we conduct is the same financial modeling service that we provide to our advisory clients. Since our beginnings, our financial models and advisory services have closed over USD 3 billion in assets, so we are confident that the skills that we impart are the techniques that are being used in real-world financings. We take a very unique approach to modeling training in our 3-pronged approach: First, Technical - we teach a "mouseless" approach to spreadsheets.... Continue reading

During a recent visit with a Boston client (CEO and HR Director), I witnessed an exchange that was both poignant and pretty funny at the same time. While we were discussing financial training for their team, the CEO had an appropriate and direct question. In response, the HR Director had a better question. It went like this- CEO: "What if we train them and they leave in a year?" HR Director: "Worse -- what if we DON'T train them and they never leave?!?" The HR Director's response (sarcastic as it were) provided some humor, but there was also a lot... Continue reading

After having carried a 17", 8 lb. personal computer around for years with a battery life not exceeding 37 minutes, I finally purchased a new, extremely light-weight laptop with a 13-hour battery life. But, as the saying goes, "There is no such thing as a free lunch" and in this case it was the loss of monitor real estate. The problem is compounded by the additional footprint that the “ribbon” occupies on 2007/10 Excel. Needless to say, I like to work without the ribbon being displayed (or “Minimize the Ribbon"). This Excel Quick Tip enables users to minimize the ribbon... Continue reading

As I write this entry, we are hours away from the end of 2010 and moving into the New Year. With my own financial modeling , I have made the conversion from Excel 2003 to 2010 with only a few days to spare, having completely by-passed 2007. Needless to say, I was reluctant to convert - clinging to 2003 for as long as I could. (I know all you old-school financial modelers can sympathize with me here.) It is painfully obvious that we are seeing a transition in Excel users from those who are strong proponents of "mouseless" manipulation for... Continue reading
