As has been established many a time, when I'm caught off guard or feel out of control, things tend to not work so well for me. Naturally, wedding planning has been an adventure. I hate interviewing vendors, figuring out who to go with, trying to negotiate packages, the whole bit. I end up liking people and establishing pseudo Italian friendship bonds and then I feel like I'm deliberately hurting people's feelings if things don't work out even though I rationally get that they understand and don't take it personally. And because my universe is one all encompassing swirl of ridiculous,... Continue reading

Actually perplexing or insomnia induced inanity? If it's can/can't and w/c/should/n't, why isn't it will/willn't? Continue reading

One of the unfortunate effects of being active on the Internet when most of the rest of my in-life relationships aren't is that there isn't a huge frame of reference when I try to explain or relate various things. Now that it's summer and most of the internet is off gallivanting and, of course, posting pictures of the gallivanting, I'm envious of how nice their captured memories look compared to mine. Not that they have nicer lives or more fun vacations (though sure, sometimes), more that their pictures and setting tableau's are just generally delightful. You know how when people... While I do stop short of Spock level, I am endlessly logical. It suits me well enough, my life and career both benefit from this particular personality quirk and there's enough Ariel at the castle is real left in my head to balance it out. Occasionally, I get evidence to refute my logic is beneficial claim. I was in Anthropologie, purchasing a couple present and the cashier and I started chatting. One area where Anthro excels (sadly, less frequently than they used to) is excellent customer service. I mentioned which items were gifts and she wrapped them up and was... Continue reading

Over Memorial Day, I trekked back out to Michigan. Supposedly the trip was to do things like pick up the rest of my things, introduce J to T/B and get away from the toxic pollen that ended up making me miserable for 4 days but really, there was one main reason. She remembered me! I had my phone recording when I walked in and there's 45 seconds of Blair Witch style footage where Tilly is divebombing me. I sat on the floor and she climbed halfway onto my chest and snuggled right up. She looks good, is crazy as ever.... Continue reading

I love Target for stress relief as much as the next person but everyone now and then, going to to nice grocery store and just letting myself browse around and find whatever sounds good to cobble together. Breathe in... Breathe out... Of course two days later it was back to cereal. Business as usual. Continue reading

(Not quite as easy to bam out as Marshall's 'Lawyered' but I'll manage) At the train station this morning before the sun had properly risen: J: Engagement rings have no value - it's a small piece of rock that marketing and society have decided are the only way to quantify worthiness. They're essentially pointless. [Ed: We like to razz on each other and since I'm a sap and we just got back from my cousin's wedding, he figured this would be an easy win, nothing more implied, no one get excited or go calling my mom about my impending nuptials]... I think of myself as an adult-type person. I say type person since my mental image of an adult is what the grown ups looked like when I was 15 and babysitting. So - mid 30s, house, fenced yard, spouse, kids, job, dog, accountant. And since I possess few of those things and certainly don't feel like I remember the adults being, am still a adult type person. Over the weekend, J and I drove up to NJ for my cousins 8th grade play and have dinner with the fam. Since the shows were spread out over the weekend, my... Continue reading

I do that annoying girl thing where compliments from other women are more meaningful/valid/hard-earned than compliments from guys. Well, I suppose it's about half that and half compliments from people who know and love me are less meaningful/valid/hard-earned than those from strangers on the street. I'm not particularly wordy, neither is J but he knows I think he looks very nice and vice-versa. A thumbs up/thumbs down when either one of us comes out of a dressing room is sufficient. Friday night when we were chatting about our week and he relayed a (what I'm sure he thought would be)... Continue reading

It's been a year. A good year, overall. Definitely not perfect but more laughter than tears and more smiles than sighs so not going to push my luck. But while I may be doing reasonably well at this forward growth gambit, I'm still me, so there's a story about me being logistically inept for my anniversary. Since Tass being in Bmore was the reason I decided to live here instead of closer to DC, which turned out to be a very good thing, it made sense that she and I celebrate together, at the diner. As with most major cities... Continue reading

It's been blustery, here, lately. Fitting since my mind is in much the same maelstrom. I know - when isn't my mind a never ending ping pong match of varying degrees of nonsense? Generally, when angst and restlessness hits, I can pinpoint it to some ongoing life drama that needs to be evaluated and adjusted. This year, though. It's...different. There's really nothing. Sure, there are some areas of life that are moving along, a couple in the direction I'd like at that, but as far as big life adjustments... nope. Of course, since my brain is still my brain, it's... December 27: Hidden talent: Do you have a hidden talent? Dazzle us. I'm inordinately amusing when I'm mad. [A very if I do say so myself talent but multiple people across a spectrum of ages/personalities keep telling me so it must be true so sure] I imagine it developed as a defense mechanism, a way of saying hey, I'm really mad/upset about this and this is the only way I can tell you my feelings while remaining not too vulnerable type thing. And while I should be better about just saying my feelings straight out because they're my feelings and... Continue reading

December 26: Typical day: Describe a typical day in your life. What do you think would surprise most people about your ordinary day? How do you cherish and appreciate the everyday? During the week: 5:52 - alarm 5:52:02 - alarm off 6:01 - alarm 6:01:02 - alarm off 6:01:03 to 6:16 - doze, enjoy being warm, if I'm really exhausted, fall back asleep nearly instantly 6:16 - alarm 6:16:01 - alarm off, gaze at ceiling 6:16 to 6:20 - out of bed, brush teeth, yell at scale, find socks 6:35 - out the door 6:35 to 7:05 - drive to... December 23: Appreciate: For what did you find a new appreciation this year? My friends. It's always hard to move to a new place and leave existing relationships. Things, of course, change and it's easy to lose touch with people that were previously close. Lucky me, I've been able to to maintain a handful of good, core friendships. It's hard to surprise to me. But on this Christmas, with a special delivery, T&B not only managed to give me the gift of the year but they made me appreciate just how wonderful it is having good friends. Continue reading

December 22: Song: What has been your theme song this year? Have there been several? Make us a mix tape and tell us the meaning behind it. It has never mattered to me whether it was Christmas or not. I listen to Christmas music year round. It makes me happy. Most particularly this song. I've said since the first time I heard it that if I ever get married, regardless of when or where, I'm walking down the aisle to this song. If my commute is rage inducing or work is particularly stressful, I put this (and the rock version)... Continue reading

Still reverbing along but it's time for the annual roundup first created by the ever awesome Linda. 1. What did you do in 2012 that you’d never done before? Well. I've worked in pubic service before and I've moved before so does it count that I did them again? I can't even say parallel parking because I'd technically done it twice before February. Hmm. 2. Did you keep your New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year? Oh, of course not. I will poach an egg in 2013! 3. Did anyone close to you have a child?... Continue reading

December 18: 1000 Words: There’s the old saying that a photo is worth 1,000 words. Give us a photo with that impact that sums up some significant event of your 2012, or give us 1000 words about a pivotal moment in 2012. For all the books I read in 2012, this was probably my favorite. Continue reading

December 14: Family: Did you role in the family shift or change over the past year? How? Why? For all I tease Mom and Dad about relegating me and my brother to the bottom of the pile now that grandbaby of awesome has come along, I only have to come home to see that while that is true, this is always the place where Mom will insist on hanging all my laundry (including undies), Dad and I will run into each other at Williams Sonoma, D and I will razz each other and then tandem parental eye roll and my... - One of the best parts of coming home is the fancy amazon rainforest shower head in my parents bathroom. - Dad uses 2-in-1 Pert Plus. But the volumizing one because I guess he thinks he's thinning. *amused* - Hot showers make everything better - If you get in a text snit (fa la la la la) and then resolve things do you let it go or do you go back and explain the fee(eeee)lings behind what set you off? (because then it makes sense and is less Christmas makes me crazy, kthx!) - Thanks to packing oversight, discovered that... Continue reading

December 13: Do-Over: Of the things that happened this year, if you had the chance to do X all over again, what would it be? Oddly enough, nothing jumps out. This from the girl who over analyzes practically everything under the sun. I mean sure, there's the obvious: not eaten so many bags of Skittles. Overall though... unless I've blocked something dramatic out, I don't think there were many instances where I had to step back and proclaim things spectacular failures. Even the things that I could have done more or better (going new places with questionable parking availability), I... Continue reading

December 11: Small pleasures: What small pleasures did you discover this year? Cheese plates Stopping for the night on the PA turnpike Crepes Walking through the park for lunch Sprinkles The reservoir Grandma's pasta Paper snowflakes December 12: Unexpected Passion: What new hobby or interest piqued your passion this year? Or did you think about an old passion in a new way? I've always been a observer. While the best will always be in airports or during the week at the shore, am pretty much always watching, monitoring, gauging. One of the most amusing [in the annoyed eye rolling way]... December 10th: Scars: They leave marks, and sometimes you can only take what you can carry. What will you, by choice or by chance, carry into 2013? While the year hasn't officially concluded yet, odds are that I'm likely to head into 2013 without any new physical scars, more just a deepening of already there mental ones. It's perplexing to me, on the occasions that I sit around and try to understand the myriad paths of my mind, what bothers me more as time goes on and what bothers me less. My car, for example, is one giant shoulder shrug.... Continue reading

December 9th: The Plank: It has been said that you must learn to take care of yourself before you can be effective at taking care of others. How did you take care of yourself in 2012? How will you take care of yourself in 2013? 2012 was more about putting in place care that I'd taken in 2011. I knew I was stagnating and just existing in MI and needed to essentially regenerate my life or it'd be another 10 years that I'd just float along, not miserable but not actively happy. Once 2012 came and I made the leap,... Continue reading

December 8th: Art: What was the most moving piece of art that you saw/experienced this year? This could mean a painting or a sculpture, or a performance you took in, or even a book that you read – tell us about the kind of art you encountered, and the way that it moved you. For all the visually amazing things I saw this year, the first thing that popped into my head on reading the prompt was the Night Circus. The novel came out a couple of years ago and I wanted to read it initially but got distracted by... Continue reading

December 7th: Feast: Hopefully you’ve had more than one spectacular meal in 2012, but what is the first that comes to mind? Were you surrounded by family at the dining room table? Sitting on a bench by the lake? Bring us there. When I first started to think about my birthday, I anticipated it being quiet. I'd probably go up to see the fam, go out for some pasta and cake, relaxing and enjoyable. And then, the day I got back from the shore, I met a boy at the coffee shop. And even though he checked his watch after... Continue reading
