I can't help it -despite barely writing this year, despite everything, I still kind of like doing this Year In Review thing. The urge to document overcomes. I've deleted or altered questions from past years, because some of them just don't apply or I'm sick of them. 1. What did you do in 2016 that you'd never done before? I ran the 10K of the A Christmas Story Race in Cleveland and dressed up as the Leg Lamp. I should add that the impetus for this crazy weekend jaunt to Cleveland was to meet friends that I had only previously... Continue reading

We unexpectedly got a new car a few weeks ago. Well, "new" in the sense of "hand me down car from my in-laws" new. They wanted to upgrade to a newer car that had some fancy collision avoidance technology, because they are getting older, and my MIL worries about all the things. So, out of nowhere, they offered us their 7-year old Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Of course we said yes. It's in great condition, and has all the bells and whistles, and oh my god, no looking a gift car in the mouth. My in-laws are so generous. They're just... Continue reading

This year has been a hell of a slog so far. I am now damn determined that it is going to go nowhere but UP. On Monday, May 9, 2016, I finally, FINALLY had long-awaited surgery on my scalp to remove two Red Delicious apple-sized tissue expanders, excise the scars & bald spots, and move the scalp tissue around so there would be hair on my whole head. I had those damn things in my head for four full months. FOUR. MONTHS. Four months of ugly, four months of discomfort, four months of hats. But it is OVER. And by... Continue reading

I haven't felt like posting here over the last few months. I had surgery on my head on Jan. 11 to insert two tissue expanders under my scalp as part of the reconstruction of said scalp to repair the big bald spots/scars from my December 2014 runner-car accident. It's been about as miserable as you can imagine, and I've felt like I had only one awful, off-key piano note to hit, over and over, a note that I don't want to hear, don't want to talk about. So, I haven't. Not much. I've tweeted about it a bit, to my... Continue reading

I wasn't sure if I wanted to do this list this year. I usually enjoy it, but 2015 was Not My Favorite. Still, the urge to document overcomes. I've deleted or altered questions from past years, because some of them just don't apply or I'm sick of them. 1. What did you do in 2015 that you'd never done before? I committed to, and completed a 37-day running streak. I ran 1 mile or more every single day from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. And I'm still going! 2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions and will you make... Continue reading

(Let's pretend Halloween wasn't almost 2 weeks ago. I always do a Halloween post, and dammit, here's another one, better late than never, right?) Another great Halloween in the books. I love Halloween in general, and I really love Halloween in our neighborhood. I've written about it many times before, how so many people decorate their houses, sit out on their stoops and hand out candy, and how the whole neighborhood is out in costume walking around. We decorate our house and yard to the nines; Helene and I try to add something new each year. This year, after some... Continue reading

Serendipitous- On Sunday, I got up, knowing I needed Some Kind Of Plan for things to do all day with Helene that would keep her from moaning and whining with much drama about recently imposed limits on iPad time. I remembered that there was a 1:35 Nationals game, and that her school had gotten a block of seats. I'd already missed out on the group tickets, but if I could just find out what section they were in, we could buy other cheap tickets and find the Capitol Hill Cluster School group - this late in the season, there would... Yesterday was Labor Day, one of the traditional bookends of summer. I wanted it to be a little more glorious, a little more right, a little more juicy, going out with a bang. It's one the last days our pool is open, and they have a few special things for all the kids - a huge bouncy house waterslide, diving for quarters (wading for rubber duckies for the littlest kids), cotton candy. The weather was glorious - hot enough for the pool, but not too humid, blazing blue sky, a few pure white clouds billowing harmlessly by. We got there... Continue reading

So. If you are bored out of your skull by people talking about running, you might want to skip this one. I mentioned in my last post that I've been running again, quite a bit. It's like now that I'm back in decent shape, and I CAN run, I don't want to stop. Like, not ever. Like I want to be this amazing 91-year old woman who recently completed the San Diego marathon. What was driving my running before was to get in good shape before embarking on the next phase of reconstructive surgery on my scalp. (If you're new... Continue reading

Oh, hey there. Yeah, I write here sometimes. There was a hiatus. That's how exhausted I was from Disney. Joking. Sort of. Life has been busy and mostly good, but there are still Many Feelings about lots of things, and some were kind of dark and tangled and raw and not ready for posting here. Anyhow. 1. I'm running again. Quite a bit. I'm addicted to running all over again. Many circumstances have turned me into an early morning runner, and I love it. I love being out when it's cooler, and there's not much traffic, and only a few... Continue reading

So! We spent a week at Disney World. Helene the 6-year old mostly loved it and had a great time. My husband went with the flow, and I think he had a reasonably good time. My in-laws said they had a good time time. Ajax, well, he's two. I really didn't enjoy it, though some things were good. I've made an effort to organize this post so that it contains less disgruntled rambling from me and more useful info for those who might want to go to Disney World but are not at all sure if they will actually like... I'm all over the place these days - up, down, happy, sad, angry, frenetic, busy, lazy. I don't even think I can put this in a neat "7 Quick Takes" post, so I'm just going to let it roll. *** I'm running again. I'M RUNNING AGAIN. I did it as soon as my physical therapist said I could. It's not very far. It's not very fast. It brings up all kinds of emotions: I feel strong, terrified, elated, petrified. I tremble sometimes when I cross a street. I wonder if I should run with music - I turn it up,... Continue reading

So, I'm a little late in writing this up, since my birthday was over two weeks ago. February 22. *Does imaginary fistbump with George Washington, my birthday-sake.* I'm doing this so I can remember what the hell I did for my usual year end recap (here's 2014). I've been waiting for this year, 42, so for one whole year I can be the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything, per The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. I mean, if I'm going to be forty fucking two, I might as well get to be THE ANSWER for one year, right?... Continue reading

I am having a super ridiculous somewhat productive but also seriously "SQUIRREL!" distracted day where I am multitasking and trying to whack-a-mole too many things on my too-long lists. So! *claps hands* Why not throw in a blog post too? 1. I am trying not to completely freak out/wail in despair over the work that still needs to be done to my head so that I look normal and not mutilated and have hair all over my whole head. I Googled lots of info etc. about tissue expanders and scalp repair, and I can't recommend that you do that because... Continue reading

Y'all, I am having a great day today. I am feeling the best that I have in about a zillion years. Well, really, it's the best I have felt in exactly nine weeks. Exactly nine weeks ago, I was in the GW Hospital Emergency Room, after being hit by a car while out on a run. But today, TODAY, it's like this: (Though, a beach and some bubbly would be pretty darn nice.) (And now I need to go watch Trading Places, one of my all-time favorite movies.) But seriously. I feel GREAT today. I have a snazzy new lululemon... Continue reading

I had my post-skin-graft-surgery visit with the plastic surgeon today. All is well! The graft looks very good, and should be healed up within a couple of weeks. "Healed" in this context means no more raw looking skin, and (this is VERY EXCITING) no more daily dressings! For the last NINE WEEKS I have had some kind of dressing on my head wound that has to be changed daily. This typically has consisted of: a thick coating of antibiotic ointment; covered by thin strips of a petrolatum cream imbued gauze known as Xeroform; and that covered up with a white... First, the good news: I'm walking! I'm up and about! I was cleared a week ago by the orthopedist to be fully weight bearing on my left leg. It felt so strange at first, like my left leg couldn't remember what to do, and I was as wobbly as a newborn foal. I was supposed to wean myself gradually off of crutches, first using both, then one, then none. Know how long I used them after my appointment? About two hours. As soon as I got home, I felt steady enough to gimp around the house without them. They were... Continue reading

My sweet boy, you turned two a couple of weeks ago, and I'm trying to capture who you are at this fleeting moment in time. It's been a tough few weeks, and I know I let your birthday go by without doing this, so I want to. To remember you, how you are right now. One of my favorite things about you is how cuddly you are. So much more than your sister was at this age. You demand "hold you! Huggy!" when you are feeling, sad, or tired, or hungry, or insecure. In the mornings, you lean your curly... Continue reading

Two weeks until I will be allowed to walk on my left leg again. 14 days. January 16. Two weeks of walkers and crutches and hopping. Two weeks left of not being able to go up the stairs or out of the house by myself. Two weeks of sleeping in a rented hospital bed in the basement. (Though, I admit, I have gotten kind of fond of the motorized incline/recline feature.) Two weeks of not being able to carry anything. Two weeks of having to ask for help with so many things. Nine more visits from the home health aide.... Continue reading

I love doing these things. I've always liked this one that I've borrowed from Sundry, and also via A'Dell because I liked her adaptation. The last time I did this was for 2013. 1. What did you do in 2014 that you'd never done before? The "firsts" for this year are really crappy ones. I had a kid spend the night in the hospital for the first time since being born, when I took Ajax to the ER on Valentine's Day for wheezing. He was hospitalized for three days with RSV. I subsequently took him to the ER twice more... Continue reading

A winter-feeling day in early December. Overcast, breezy, chilly, but not too bad. I was getting over a cold, but wanted to brave a quick run in the morning. I had an early conference call at work, so I slunk into the office wearing running clothes, planning to slink right out for that run after my call, squeezing it all in, like I do every day. A colleague busted me as I finished up my call, coming in to ask for a meeting. I looked up, guilty and unshowered, and promised to do the meeting, just an hour later than... Continue reading

My girl, my big, big girl. Where do I even start? What a different creature you are than the tiny, perfect pink one that I met six years ago. Photo by Djenno Bacvic Here are the things you love: Mama, Papa, and Ajax. You draw us endless pictures and write us endless notes telling each of us that you love us. They are plastered in my office, on the walls, piled beside our beds. You love writing and drawing and coloring, even carefully tapping out your own stories on the computer, one sentence per page. You love the snow; you... Continue reading

That's what Helene said when she got home from trick or treating and started her shift in handing out candy at our house. I couldn't have been happier - Halloween is one of those pinnacles of kid-dom - I always loved it, and all the heart cockles are warmed by seeing my kids love it too. Our big-ass pumpkin - before and after. Actually, this was our second big-ass pumpkin because some jackass stole our first one out of our front yard, and by god, Helene and I went right out to get another one, because we were having a...
