"...superior offensive skills"...comparisons to A-Rod and Barry Bonds...come on people. A-Rod and Bonds were criticized for underperforming in the POSTSEASON. Uggla is a .240 hitter who hits with power if the ball finds his bat. He has never shown any consistency to claim he underperforms at any time. HE IS NOT WORTH $8MM.
Florida Marlins: "Still in the game" for Chapman; Uggla to stay put?
The Marlins apparently are giving free agent Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman something to think about. According to an American League source following the situation, the Marlins are "still in the game" and are believed to have increased their initial $13 million offer in hopes of landing the ...
Agree with oaktree. This team is not done yet. 90 wins is within their reach and playoffs or no playoffs, that is a remarkable season for a team ranked dead last in payroll to start the year.
They're a great story, but I'm tired of great stories. Hopefully, ownership can use the certainty of a new ballpark to field a 2010 team with real expectations.
Good, But Not Good Enough
It's looking more and more like the Marlins will finish with a winning record but fail to reach the playoffs, which is becoming the norm for them. The need only go 8-15 or better the rest of the way to wind up above .500, but have only about a 1 in 20 chance of making the playoffs based on t...
The low payroll contributes directly to the holes on this team:
1. No veteran every day player to provide offensive leadership.
2. No veteran pitcher to help mature these young talented starters.
3. No seasoned closer.
4. Just one feared bat in the line-up.
5. Various guys playing out of position.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting you need to spend over $100 million. Frankly, as a fan I prefer they don't spend that much. I can't imagine what it must be like to be a Yankee fan where anything short of a championship feels like a disappointment.
But, $36 million is way too low to expect consistency.
Marlins want to end inconsistency
They started the season winning 11 in a row before dropping the next seven. In June, they swept two series (Toronto, Baltimore) and were swept once (Rays). We all know what happened last week. If this Marlins season has felt like a line from a Paula Abdul song to you, you aren't alone. The Ma...
Inconsistency comes with being a payroll bottom dweller.
This team has already outperformed spring training expectations, which were dismal given the low payroll. It is unreasonable to expect consistency.
Let's just enjoy this ride, hope September games matter and pray off-season moves raise expectations for 2010 and beyond, which will also raise attendance.
